VIEW / How to identify a fake on Ozon and Wildberries? :: Question of the Day

Counterfeits on marketplaces are found among many categories of goods, but most often they counterfeit everyday goods for which there is a stable demand. An extremely low price for a product, negative reviews with photos, as well as a visual assessment of the product will help to recognize a purchase from an unscrupulous seller.

Buyers of goods on marketplaces regularly complain about fakes that are sold under the guise of the original. It is difficult to recognize them when ordering online. This is not an offline store where you can view a thing, feel it, check its performance, and make sure of the quality of the product. Experts in an interview with the VZGLYAD newspaper told how to identify counterfeit goods and what to do if you buy counterfeit goods.

President of the Association of Internet Trade Companies Artem Sokolov said that marketplace sellers themselves do not counterfeit goods, but sell non-original products manufactured by someone else. Most often among fakes are clothes and shoes of famous brands. This is the main category in which counterfeiting is most often observed. “According to our calculations, the number of such counterfeit products on marketplaces may be less than 0.1%. However, given that the total number of goods at different sites ranges from 40 to 400 million units, it is difficult not to notice this phenomenon,” the expert says.

One of the key features that may raise doubts about the authenticity, continues the interlocutor, is the price of the goods. “A clear sign is when it is known that the cost of the original is high, and the seller offers significantly cheaper. In these cases, you should be careful,” advises Sokolov.

Mobile Research Group Leading Analyst Eldar Murtazin, in an interview with the VZGLYAD newspaper, noted that among electronics, TWS headphones (wireless headphones using the Bluetooth protocol) are most often faked. According to him, every fifth Apple AirPods sold in Russia are counterfeit. “If we talk about TWS headphones of all manufacturers for a circle, then every tenth pair is counterfeit. Basically it’s AirPods. Samsung Galaxy Buds are less faked, and there are fakes from other manufacturers, ”the specialist shares.

To avoid buying counterfeit electronics, the expert continues, buying goods in large trusted stores with a good reputation will help. This will not completely protect against the acquisition of low-quality goods, but it will protect the buyer later, because he will be able to contact the seller and will be protected by law.

Stylist, TV and radio host Vladislav Lisovets notes that marketplaces most often sell fake T-shirts with logos of famous brands. However, they can be easily distinguished from the original by the quality of the fabrics used, and the inscriptions themselves often contain errors.

“As a rule, the inscriptions are slightly different. This also applies to the font, fakes do not always manage to get into it. And of course, this is always a very low price”,

– says Lisovets.

CEO of the fulfillment operator TEAM DEEM Daria Tatarinova also noted that textiles, clothing and footwear are among the most counterfeit items on Russian marketplaces. However, this also applies to perfumes, electrical appliances, audio equipment, smartphones, as well as accessories for them – chargers and additional devices of well-known brands. All these are everyday goods for which there is a stable demand.

In order not to buy a fake, she recommends paying attention to the price of the product first of all. In order to understand how correct it is, you should find out the retail price on the brand’s official sites. “The allowable difference in the price of the same product is 20-30%. If the cost of the product being sold is significantly lower than the price in the official store, then this is a reason to think. You need to use special browser plugins that allow you to monitor price dynamics in order to understand whether the market price for the product you are interested in has really fallen,” the specialist recommends.

It is important to look at product reviews, the interlocutor continues. Those that contain photographs are most likely written by real users. If most of the reviews with photos are negative, then this is another reason to think about the non-original product.

“One hundred percent way to understand that the product is original is to buy products that sell marketplaces, or representative offices of the manufacturer, or its official dealer. How to understand – you need to look at the seller. If you see the symbols of a well-known brand, but Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich sells it, then this is also a reason to think and apply for its dealer permission through the special “ask the seller” tab, Tatarinova advises.

Also, the knowledge of the buyer about the product will not interfere, the specialist believes. If possible, then you should go to a real offline store, feel and “taste” the product, remember its technical characteristics, and in fact, when it was brought to the point of issue of orders, examine it in detail. If the quality of the purchase is in doubt, then it should be discarded and sent back.

The interlocutor reminds that most of the goods can be returned back, in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, within the prescribed period. The exceptions are underwear, a number of medical products, some technically complex products and other legally prescribed categories.

Co-Chairman of the National Union for the Protection of Consumer Rights Aleksey Egarmin calls to check the goods of any category immediately at the point of issue of orders. This will help to avoid situations when the product is non-returnable, and instead of the expected original, a fake has arrived – you can immediately refuse the purchase on the spot. Most marketplaces, although they fight against dishonest sellers, do not always succeed, so they generally treat refusals with understanding.

“Marketplaces are not responsible for the originality of the goods. Therefore, it is high time to modernize the law on the protection of consumer rights, because the marketplace is exactly the participant in the sales chain, because of which it did not take place, which means that it should be responsible. But in general, almost any product can be returned. The Consumer Protection Act allows this. If you receive a product, but it is not what you expected, there are signs that the product is fake, then you simply return it,” explains the specialist.

The Consumer Protection Act allows goods purchased online to be returned to the seller, even without giving reasons, within seven days. Moreover, if any defect is found in a technically complex product, a person, according to the law, can apply to the seller with a return request within 15 days from the date of purchase. At the same time, all terms under the law on consumer protection are considered in calendar days, which means that weekends and holidays are also counted.

And even if a person buys a product knowing that it is a replica, which, by the way, some sellers do not hide, he still has the right to return the product if he is not satisfied with the quality of the purchase. If the product breaks down after a while, then you should act in accordance with the guarantees that the seller promised. The seller is responsible for any of his goods. And even if it was declared as a replica, but turned out to be unreliable and of poor quality, then you should contact the seller. There are no other options in this case, ”Egarmin concluded.

Earlier, the legal agency IQ Technology conducted a study, which revealed that since July last year, the number of counterfeit electronics of companies that left the Russian market has almost doubled on Russian marketplaces. The share of counterfeit smartphones has grown from 12% to 31%, laptops from 22% to 30%, smartwatches from 35% to 63%, and headphones and speakers from 27% to 69%.
