If you suffer from seasonal allergies, now is when they are at their worst. Stock up on allergy season’s most important products to keep your home, classroom, and office allergen-free. Start with an air purifier to strip the air of allergens like pollen and pet dander and replace existing air filters for improved air quality. When leaving the house, check the pollen count and bring a face mask to help filter the air you breath outside.

No matter what you do, it’s unlikely that the symptoms of seasonal allergies can be avoided entirely. Make sure to have over-the-counter cold and allergy medications on hand to battle symptoms, and stock up on facial tissues so you’ll always have one available when you need them.

You can also use closet organizers and storage drawers anywhere they are needed.

USB-C Cables and USB-C Adapters from Cable Matters

USB-C explained: What is USB-C?

USB-C – sometimes called USB Type C – is the latest and greatest version of the common USB (Universal Serial Bus) connector. USB C cables use a compact and reversible 24-pin connector that fits on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and computers of all operating systems – Android, ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows.

Where is the USB C port used?

The USB-C port is found on new smartphones, computers, laptops, and tablets for home and business use. USB-C is a powerhouse of a port capable of transferring files, charging devices, and even carrying video to monitors. You can find USB-C docking stations, USB-C chargers, USB-C adapters, and USB-C monitors. Simply put, a USB-C cable is a one-cable solution for every connection need.

Blazing-fast USB-C data speeds

The USB-C cable standard is simply a connector – it’s the USB protocol version behind it that does the heavy lifting. For many years, USB 2.0 was one of the USB types that reigned supreme, offering a meager 480Mbps of data transfer speed. The introduction of the USB-C connector coincided with the launch of USB 3.0, which upped data transfer to 5Gbps. The latest and greatest protocol version – USB4 – can support blazing-fast 40Gbps data transfer and exclusively uses the USB-C connector.

Data Transfer Rate

With different speeds comes different cables, and it can get a bit confusing. For the fastest data transfer possible, make sure the USB version of the cable at least matches the USB version of your device. USB4 cables – the latest and greatest USB-C cable standard – are fully backward compatible with all previous USB versions.

USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charging

USB-C’s one-cable-for-it-all approach even includes power and charging. USB-C can deliver up to 100W of power to connected devices – enough to power and charge high-end laptops and smartphones.

Different cables support different USB-C charging specifications. To get the most out of a USB Type C charging solution, you’ll want to make sure your cable matches the charging power your device can accept over USB-C.

USB-C video: Watch, charge, and transfer

USB-C isn’t just for data and power. Video is where the true versatility of USB-C shines. Through alt-modes, USB-C can carry video signals just like a video cable with another connector on it. Thanks to the outstanding bandwidth of USB-C, these alt modes can carry ultra high definition 4K and 8K video at blazing-fast refresh rates.

Support for alt-modes makes accessories like the USB-C to HDMI adapter, USB-C to DisplayPort adapter, USB-C to VGA adapter, and USB-C to DVI adapter possible. You can also find a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, USB-C to HDMI cable, and more. As USB-C becomes ubiquitous, different video adapters might become a thing of the past, replaced by a single USB-C connector. Some high-end monitors already sport USB-C video ports.

Multi-functional USB-C switches, USB-C hubs, and USB-C docks

Thanks to the versatility of USB-C, you can find a USB-C hub, USB-C docking station, USB-C dock, or USB-C switch to meet any scenario. Create the ultimate one-cable solution for a full computer workstation – including keyboard, mouse, video, and peripherals – with a USB C dock. Connect dual HDMI and DisplayPort monitors with a dual video USB-C hub. The possibilities are endless.

USB-C vs. Thunderbolt

At first glance, the differences between Thunderbolt vs USB-C might not be obvious. Both connection standards use the USB-C connector. From connection speed to device support, there are big differences between Thunderbolt or USB-C that are worth considering.

What is a USB-C hub?

Although these products are often referred to as adapters or dongles (since there are so many devices hanging from them), they are actually hubs that take up one port on a laptop or tablet and add several and various other connection ports.

If you want something more substantial to secure your laptop at home or office, with many more ports and a proper power supply, you should consider a full USB-C docking station with even more ports and full power supply (USB PD) that charges your laptop at the same time.

The latest connection standard is Thunderbolt 4 or USB4. We’ve tested the best Thunderbolt 4 hubs and docks.

First, consider what you need from a hub or adapter. Most of them are multiport, so they include more than one type of connection.

USB-A: is a classic irreversible USB. Do you just need to plug in some accessories – memory card, hard drive, webcam – that use the old standard USB connections? If so, there are plenty of easy adapters available at low cost, and almost all of them boast at least one. Speeds range from 480MB/s (USB 2.0) to 5Gb/s (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and 10Gb/s (USB 3.2 Gen 2).

USB-C: is the latest reversible USB. There aren’t as many accessories as with USB-A, but the additional Type-C port can be used for data and, if labeled as such, for pass-through power from a USB-C wall charger.

Thunderbolt : It looks exactly like USB-C, but Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 are much faster at 40Gbps compared to 5Gbps or 10Gbps. If your laptop supports Thunderbolt 3 or 4, it’s wise to buy an adapter, hub, or docking station with the same connector. TB4 is backwards compatible with USB-C and TB3, although some Windows TB3 laptops and PCs may not be supported; all recent Apple MacBooks will.

USB4 : Using the same connector as USB-C, USB4, like Thunderbolt, is a more complex and often faster connection standard.

When choosing a hub, be sure to check the USB speed rating as it ranges from 480Mbps (USB 2.0) to 40Gbps (USB4, Thunderbolt 3 or 4).

HDMI: Need an HDMI port for your laptop? There are many USB-C hubs that include HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) including 4K. Most of the HDMI-packed hubs listed here support 4K displays at 30Hz, rather than full 4K at 60Hz, which offers higher graphics for crisper video and gaming.

DisplayPort : These display ports are more commonly found on full-fledged docking stations, but you can buy USB-C DisplayPort adapters.

VGA : This is a fairly old video port, rarely seen on modern displays, but if you move a lot between offices (or have an older monitor), this option might come in handy.

Power: Some laptops and most tablets only have one USB-C port, so add an adapter and you have nothing left to charge your computer at the same time. In this case, you should look for a hub with an additional USB-C Power Delivery (PD) port so you can continue to power your laptop while using the adapter.

This is known as pass-through charging. 85W and above powers most laptops at full speed. The best docking stations will provide plenty of power for your connected devices as well as your laptop, but a powerful hub might be enough if you’re not using all ports at the same time. Keep in mind that in most cases you will need a separate wall charger to supply this pass-through power – your laptop charger should suffice. Check out our roundup of the best USB-C chargers for our recommended PD chargers.

Tablets generally require less energy. For example, a 12-inch iPad Pro will charge at full speed at about 40W.

Ethernet: Even with Wi-Fi so pervasive, you still can’t beat the speed of a wired Ethernet connection that you can still find in hotels and, of course, from your router. If so, you need a hub with an RJ45 Ethernet port – and make sure it’s a Gigabit Ethernet connection for faster data transfers. Much more expensive adapters use the latest 2.5GBASE-T or 5GBASE-T ports that provide multi-gigabit speeds up to 5Gbps over existing Cat5e cables or better. But 1 Gbps Ethernet speed will be enough for most.

Memory cards. Fewer laptops these days have memory card slots—certainly not from Apple. If it’s important to you, look for SD, MicroSD, and TF card slots on the hub or adapter. You can quickly and very cheaply add portable storage to your laptop.

Audio . Many people use wireless Bluetooth headphones and speakers, but if you want to connect wired headphones or speakers to your laptop, you’ll need a 3.
