A TV screen is better suited for gaming, watching movies, and other tasks than a smartphone. And if you want to duplicate a picture from a smartphone on the screen, this can be done in several ways. Consider the most popular on the example of Samsung TVs.

Screen Mirroring
Screen Mirroring is Samsung’s proprietary technology that transmits the image from the smartphone screen to the TV in real time. It is available on relatively new models, so if you bought a TV a long time ago, first find out if it supports this technology.
Both devices must be connected to Wi-Fi to transfer the picture. In the TV menu, you need to find the “Source” section and activate the Screen Mirroring item in it. If the model you are using does not have smart features, you will need an intermediary device. It can be Samsung AllShare Cast, Chromecast or Amazon Firestick.
There are several ways to connect:
- through the Samsung SmartThings and Smart View apps;
- using AirPlay – for Apple devices;
- through the Tap View function implemented in Samsung TVs in 2020 – it allows you to establish a connection by simply touching the phone to the TV, provided that there is a Smart Things application on the mobile device;
- using the Netflix and YouTube apps that have built-in screen casting.
Connecting with the Smart Things app
This app is designed as a control center for Samsung smart devices. It is installed on mobile devices with Android and iOS operating systems and can be pre-installed on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
To connect, you need:
- open the application;
- select “Add” and then “Device”;
- in the list that opens, find your TV;
- After the connection is established, press the TV icon again and select “Screen Mirror”.
Now you can stream movies and photos, play music through your TV speakers, and use your smartphone as a remote control.
Connecting with Smart View
1. Open the app.
2. Select your TV from the list of available devices.
3. Select one of the three options – My Photos, My Videos or My Music.
Once connected, all you have to do is find the content you want to play. The app also turns your smartphone into a remote control.
Using Miracast
Miracast technology allows you to establish a wireless connection between two devices without a router or other intermediary gadget. Not all models of smartphones and TVs support it. If it is not on your TV, you can use an external adapter that connects to the HDMI port.
Such a device may be called, for example, MiraScreen. But if your smartphone does not support it, you will not be able to use this method. Therefore, find out if Miracast is included in the list of capabilities of your mobile device.
The connection process depends on which smartphone you are using. For example, on Sony Xperia devices, in the settings you need to select the item “Xperia Connections”, in it – “Screen mirroring”, and after clicking on it – select the TV. On Xiaomi devices, you need the “Wireless Display” item, which is located in the “Additional Features” section of the settings.
Miracast is great for broadcasting video content. But when launching games, there may be delays of up to 0.5-1 seconds.
Chromecast media player
Google has developed a family of digital media players that can turn your TV into a smart device. This compact gadget connects to your TV via an HDMI port. It supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technologies. There are several versions of the Chromecast media player on sale, differing in capabilities.
Some of them allow you to stream video in 4K resolution.
To broadcast a picture from the screen of a mobile phone, you need to install the Google Home application, which is compatible with models with Android and iOS operating systems. Then just open it and follow the prompts of the connection guide.
Chromecast allows you to not only watch videos from your smartphone and play mobile games on your TV screen. It also allows you to use various applications on the big screen. Among them are the Chrome browser, many other Google solutions, including Photos, as well as applications of popular media services: HBO, YouTube, Netflix.
DLNA technology
This technology is designed to connect smart home devices into a digital network, and connect them both wired and wirelessly. In order to use it, the TV must support the DLNA standard. Also, all devices that participate in the exchange of media content must be connected to Wi-Fi – if wireless broadcasting is expected.
You need to install the BubbleUPnP application or its equivalent on your smartphone. Open it, find your TV in the list of available devices and tap it to connect. DLNA technology allows you to broadcast only media content – videos, photos and music.
Wired connection
All methods of broadcasting an image from a smartphone display to a TV screen, which were discussed above, assumed, first of all, wireless communication. But Samsung TVs have connectors that you can use to cable your mobile device.
USB port
This is the easiest way. You will need a cable that has a USB type A connector on one end (these are the ports commonly used on TVs), and on the other end a plug that matches your smartphone’s connector: microUSB or USB Type-C. You can also use a wire with two USB Type-A connectors and an adapter with which you connect it to your phone.
1. Connect your smartphone and TV with a USB cable.
2. In the TV menu, find the Source section and select USB.
In this case, the TV perceives the connected smartphone as a USB flash drive or an external hard drive. You will get access to its file system, you will be able to watch videos and photos, listen to music. But launching the application and broadcasting it on a TV screen will not work.
Via HDMI output
The connection principle is the same as in the previous paragraph. But you will need a cable that has an HDMI connector on one end and a USB connector on the other of the type used in your smartphone. An alternative option is an HDMI to HDMI cable and an HDMI to USB adapter for connecting to a smartphone.
Once the TV and phone are connected by cable, HDMI must be selected as the signal source. The advantage over connecting with a USB cable is higher image quality. HDMI technology allows you to broadcast an image with a resolution of up to 4K without loss of quality.
Using MHL technology
It is important that your smartphone supports this technology.
If your TV does not support it, you can buy a special active MHL adapter.
An MHL cable is required to connect devices. On a TV, it connects to the HDMI input, and on a smartphone, to the port that is used to connect the charger.
Rather than just plugging into a USB or HDMI port, MHL technology provides true smartphone screen mirroring. That is, you play a video or open an application, and the picture from the gadget’s display is displayed on the TV screen. This allows you to work and play games, including dynamic ones – the delay in transferring the picture is so minimal that you will not notice it. Image quality is high: MHL supports resolutions up to Full HD.

This technology is an alternative to MHL. Not all smartphones support it, so before purchasing the appropriate cable, you need to make sure that your phone will work with it. As for the TV, there is no compatibility issue with SlimPort, you just connect the wire to the HDMI input.
