Tigers left “Fort Boyard” – Kommersant FM

TV show “Fort Boyard” will give up live tigers. Instead, 3D models of animals will guard the treasury of the fortress, the media write. They will be used from the next TV game season, which starts on July 2. The decision was explained by the evolution of the mentality of viewers, “concerned about the welfare of animals.” The theme will be continued by Yana Lubnina.

Tigers have been a symbol of Fort Boyard since the very beginning – the growl of the prize gold guards sounded in the intro. They were not endowed with a special function, the predators were simply released from the cages onto the playground at the end of the competition, and the participants, naturally, were in a hurry to crawl under the lowering door with handfuls of coins. That live tigers would leave the show has been discussed for several years. The participants themselves spoke out against the “abuse”, and animal rights activists demanded changes in public petitions. The producers finally agreed: first they did not replace the tiger Kali, who retired at 15, and then confirmed that they would do the same with the two remaining animals. However, the tigers “did not work” all year round. Filming with their participation lasted 20 days a year – in spring and summer.

At the same time, most of the time the animals lay in enclosures, says Kommersant FM host Marat Kashin, who participated in the Fort Boyard show in 2004: “Our acquaintance with tigers took place only at the very last stage, when we had already passed all tests, came running to guess the word. If you remember, there is such a large cage with letters in the middle, with a device from which money spills out. Tigers there feel, as it seemed to us, quite at ease. When they were driven into the aviary, they growled with displeasure, and it seemed that no one particularly oppressed them there. And, of course, they create the atmosphere of Fort Boyard, because in itself it is small – all the sounds inside are audible, and this tiger growl periodically reached us.

Live tigers will not appear in the new season of Fort Boyard. According to media reports, they have already been handed over to the breeder. At the same time, these animals are probably not ready for life away from humans, explains the candidate of biological sciences, zoologist Mikhail Krechmar. He did not rule out that the producers could be guided by financial motives: “Replacing a tiger is a lot of money, $ 50-60 thousand. Today, there are 10 times more of them in captivity than in the wild. If this is an element of the show, then they are always under tranquilizers. They probably have their claws removed. If they even live in captivity up to 10 generations, then people are their own for them. Sometimes they are very sociable.”

Without tigers, the hallmark of the show, the intensity of passion at Fort Boyard will inevitably decrease, STS producer Fatima Gappoeva is convinced. The program has been on this channel for the last three years. “The absence of tigers will probably deprive the emotions of the participants and, accordingly, some of the emotions of the viewer. At the same time, the meaning of the project is different: there the heroes face a certain overcoming as part of trials in cells. 99% of what Fort gave in terms of content will remain without tigers,” said Fatima Gappoeva.

Initially, it was planned to replace the footage of live tigers with edited footage from the archives. But the creators of the show found them unconvincing and settled on 3D models. As planned, avatars will behave as naturally as possible, for example, lick their lips when participants appear. However, such an attempt to modernize the show is unlikely to add to its popularity, says Evgeny Safronov, editor-in-chief of the Intermedia agency:

Fort Boyard auditorium is adult. Of course, this will not be enough for young viewers.

I would add some contemporary music and opinion leaders. Another question is that the informational occasion can attract a little more people to the screen for a while – just to see how they did it.

The question remains: will the matter be limited to the resignation of the tigers? More than 300 animals are used in the show, including tarantulas, rats, toads, scorpions, cockroaches, and locusts. According to animal rights activists from the One Voice association, they often die during competitions. They demanded that the producers stop filming any animals. It seems that soon they will have to completely abandon such tests as running with rats or touching giant bugs.
