Plenty of retailers don’t open on Thanksgiving every year, but are more joining their ranks in 2022?

Black Friday is this week, so it’s time to think of a game plan for the shopping holiday. And putting one of those together involves deciding which stores you’ll want to shop. That means you need to know what stores will be open on Thanksgiving, as well as what time retailers will open on Black Friday.
To help you keep track, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of confirmed and projected store hours for Thanksgiving and Black Friday 2022. Some are based on store hours from 2021, but check back often — we’ll keep updating this page with confirmed times as they’re released.
Note: In the list and chart below, stores marked with an asterisk (*) have projected hours that are not yet confirmed for 2022.
What Stores Will Be Closed on Thanksgiving?
The following stores have either historically been closed on Thanksgiving or have announced they’ll be closed for Turkey Day 2022. So don’t expect them to have any Thanksgiving hours. In most — if not all — cases, though, you should still be able to shop online on their apps and websites.

When is Global Black Friday?
This year’s massive worldwide Black Friday sale will take place on November 25th. Traditionally, all popular brands and chains will take part in it. Discounts on this day will reach unprecedented sizes – from 30 to 90%. Thus, Black Friday 2022 is a unique opportunity to buy household appliances or branded clothes at a ridiculous price.
Black Friday – an American tradition that conquered the world
It is curious that the term “Black Friday” does not match its gloomy name. For shopaholics and sellers, the worldwide sale is a real treat.
Black Friday originated on the US East Coast. This is the name given to the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the last Thursday of November. On this day, the New Year sales started. And on Black Friday, the discounts were the largest. Gradually, the tradition of organizing a November sale spread throughout the world. It is beneficial both to buyers, who can buy expensive goods at discounted prices, and to sellers. It would seem, what is the benefit of stores? In fact, they kill three birds with one stone:
- provide a large flow of customers – discounts attract a record number of people;
- draw attention to the brand – Black Friday is an excellent advertising move, often manufacturers even time the release of new lines to coincide with it;
- get rid of stale goods – the latest single sizes of clothes or the only smartphone of a certain series in the store can be bought at a ridiculous price.
In the US, it is considered bad manners to return an item purchased on Black Friday. This is another huge plus for sellers.
Black Friday is impatiently awaited in America. Some shopaholics even take days off. Shops open in the morning – sometimes at 5:00. By this time, a large number of people accumulate in front of the entrance. Some shops open at midnight.
Black Friday has taken root well in Europe, including Ukraine. But here it is more restrained. Nevertheless, the sale attracts a lot of people.
Term controversy
The phrase “Black Friday” first appeared in Philadelphia at 1966 year. There are three versions of its origin:
- Black Friday was called black by the police, who had to work overtime. On this day, the residents of the city, who were in a hurry for sales, created huge traffic jams. The police could hardly cope with them, and they called this day black.
- Huge crowds formed in the stores. Often people get injured in them. This is how the name “Black Friday” came about.
- The term appeared due to the peculiarities of bookkeeping. Sellers marked profit in black and loss in red. On Black Friday, there was no red in the statements. There was only black, hence the name of the sale.
Black Friday Timing
The term “Black Friday” refers to one particular day. However, in practice, the sale can last for a whole month – until the Catholic Christmas. In addition, it may be preceded by pre-sales.
There is another term – “Cyber Monday”. It refers to the Monday following Black Friday. On this day, some electronics and household appliances stores announce discounts on their goods.
What can you buy on Black Friday?
Absolutely everything! A special boom unfolds around household appliances and electronics. The sale provides an opportunity to buy a refrigerator, washing machine, multicooker, blender, tablet, phone, laptop, TV and many other expensive devices at a discount. Invariably, world-famous brands of clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories participate in Black Friday.

Fridays”, despite the fact that sales in Russia officially start on the night of November 29th.

Stores intend to give away goods for next to nothing. Svyaznoy promises to sell gadgets with a 75% discount, M.Video and Eldorado reduce prices for electronics and household appliances by up to 80%, and the Wildberries Internet platform promised that “discounts will reach 95% on all categories of goods without exceptions. Not only clothing and electronics stores participate in the attraction of unheard of generosity, travel agencies, ticket and hotel booking services, hairdressers, restaurants and furniture stores guarantee discounts in the hope of high demand.
However, do not rush to get You can buy only a small number of goods at big discounts on Black Friday, experts say.Count on the latest smartphones, cars, home theaters, fur coats and kitchen sets for a third of the price.0003
As a rule, during sales, retailers try to get rid of stale and unclaimed goods. Fashionable clothes and popular gadgets are taken apart anyway. Discounts on them will turn out to be quite insignificant – an average of 10-15% of the cost, and then on selective models, experts predict.
“Purchases during this promotion should be approached very carefully. If you really need a specific phone and you see that it will cost several thousand cheaper during the sale, then why not take advantage of the offer,” says the chairman of the Union of Consumers of Russia Petr Shelishch – But I do not advise buying everything. One study showed that Russians are the second most impulsive in the world after the people of Hong Kong. I do not presume to say how true this is, but each of us has made unnecessary purchases more than once in our lives. ”
The money is spent, but as a result things and goods are not needed. “It is worth remembering that Black Friday and similar sales are more in the hands of sellers who earn more than a year these days, and not buyers at all,” he warns.
Popular gadgets are dismantled anyway. Discounts on them will turn out to be quite insignificant – an average of 10-15%, and then on select models
Often “Black Friday” turns out to be just a marketing ploy, because the phrase Black Friday has long become a symbol of sales around the world. According to Admitad, in India, the number of online orders these days increases at least seven times compared to a regular Friday, and in Israel – by 40-70%. In Egypt, sales in 2018 increased 10 times.
The term “Black Friday” first appeared in American Philadelphia. Motorists came up with it, dissatisfied with giant traffic jams. With this promotion, the traditional Christmas sale season begins. On Black Friday, shops open very early – around five in the morning, and some of the largest retail chains – even at midnight. First buyers are offered serious discounts – from 50 to 80%. This is done in order to attract as many customers as possible to the stores.
Russian sellers started preparing for the sale weeks in advance. Already, many stores are pasted over with advertising stickers and promise customers unprecedented benefits. The trend to announce global sales well in advance of the official date has been strong in recent years. Many stores began to prepare for almost two months. In particular, the pre-sale started on October 18 in the Ozon online store. As a result, over the past three weeks, the average order receipt has grown by 10%, while every third customer who has made a purchase returns for repeat orders. “According to our forecasts, by the end of the sale, Black Friday revenue will grow by 140% compared to the same period last year,” Pavel Kobelev, head of promotion at Ozon, told RG. Black Friday is becoming more of a household name and less seasonal,” says Mark Sherman, managing partner at communications agency B&C Agency.
The top 3 most popular categories in terms of revenue during this period are traditionally represented by electronics, clothing and children’s goods. There are also new revenue growth drivers – over the three weeks of the sale compared to the same period last year, sales of furniture increased by six times, sports goods by 3.5 times, and food by 2.5 times, Ozon says. In Citilink, cell phones, laptops, washing machines, refrigerators and coffee machines are seen as sales drivers. Last year, laptops, TVs and plasma panels became the most purchased items on Black Friday.
The top 3 most popular categories are traditionally represented by electronics, clothing and children’s goods
“We don’t have a long tradition of Black Fridays in Russia. Yes, everywhere it’s an effective marketing ploy to stimulate sales, but in Russia the discounts are mostly negligible. Therefore, I would advise fans of big discounts not to succumb to the hype, but to wait for seasonal sales, which take place twice a year – in January and July,” says Anton Alfer, founder of the fashion chain MODA.RU. Those who will hunt for phones and laptops, according to him, can gain from 10 to a maximum of 25-30%. The expert also advises on the weekend, when there are sales, to pay attention to tours and air tickets. You can find a profitable offer, but you will have to spend a lot of time monitoring discounts. By the way, please note that on some sites the prices in the regular version and the mobile version are different, discounts can also be different.
Every year, Rospotrebnadzor reminds that the seller during sales is obliged to clearly formulate the conditions for the purchase of goods for the promotion, as well as its cost. He must also guarantee the exchange and return on a common basis. Petr Shelishch reminds that you can return a product that did not fit or turned out to be unnecessary, even if it was bought at a sale. However, this rule does not apply, for example, to jewelry, perfumes and cosmetics. Furniture sets and sets cannot be returned, but individual pieces of furniture can be returned. It is impossible to return cars and smartphones in good condition. Therefore, even in the salon it is worth making sure how much a new phone is really needed. However, if the mobile phone was bought on the Internet, then you can return it. The buyer has seven days to do so. “Large online sellers now, when delivering goods, hand over to buyers a paper that says that the consumer has this week’s return period without giving reasons. If this paper has not arrived, then the person generally has three months to return,” explains the chairman of the board International Confederation of Consumer Societies Dmitry Yanin.
It is not worth chasing a profit that may turn out to be imaginary. Not all promotions really help save money, but they contribute to uncontrolled shopping. Petr Shelishch believes that literate consumption should be taught at school. According to him, in the near future a draft law amending the law on consumer protection will be submitted to the State Duma, which proposes to introduce the basics of consumer behavior into the school curriculum. Among other things, the expert says that children need to be told by examples what discounts are and how much you can actually save on them.
And as in Europe
The Germans, as you know, know the value of money, and therefore closely monitor all kinds of discounts and promotions. But for the same reason, they are in no hurry to overpay on the days of “grand” sales. According to surveys by the consumer behavior forum Mydealz, the average German resident is ready to shell out about 222.2 euros on the upcoming Black Friday on November 29th. At the same time, older people – from 45 to 64 years old – plan to spend more than 250 euros. Only 3% of Germans have not heard anything about “Black Friday”, and two years ago there were 11% of such people. Meanwhile, the Federal Union of German Consumer Centers has warned shoppers about possible “fake offers” online, especially if promotions require online prepayment. Last time, many customers of the German branch of one of the leading American online stores did not receive the ordered parcels, writes tagesspiegel.de. The union analyzed 2,500 offers on various online sites before Black Friday and concluded that 74% of goods really fell in price. Another thing is that only a small part of them were sold with really noticeable discounts – 20% and more. On average, they accounted for only 6%. Perhaps that is why in Germany there are the first signs that the euphoria before Black Friday is coming to naught among consumers.
