Pair a speaker to your TV using Bluetooth
While we do make great Soundbars that pair perfectly with your TV, perhaps you already have a wireless speaker you’d like to listen through. Generally speaking, connecting an audio device by Bluetooth is usually a last resort. It’s often better to use Wi-Fi or even a wired connection like Digital Audio Out (Optical) or HDMI (ARC) for your audio if your device supports it. Bluetooth can save you some wires and hassle, though.
Just remember that if you connect using Bluetooth:
-
Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode and make sure it is discoverable. See the product’s user manual for how to do this, if needed.
-
Navigate to the Bluetooth audio device list on your TV and select the speaker to pair with. The process is slightly different depending on what model of TV you have.

Inputs and Connectors
It’s important to understand what audio connectors your Smart TV has so you don’t have to look for adapters later.
SCART
Turn the back of the TV towards you and inspect it. This large block with many holes is called SCART.
Although it was intended to be a universal connector, it is unlikely that you will connect speakers to it. There is no such output on modern audio systems. But SCART can be useful if you have RCA outputs busy. Through an adapter, you can connect speakers with an RCA output to it.
And here is the RCA or “tulip” itself.
It is clear that the IN jacks are designed to transmit a signal from an external source to a TV, and OUT (or OUTPUT), on the contrary, to output sound to speakers. RCA connectors are paired – white and red. There may be several such pairs. This is the most common, albeit outdated, way to connect external speakers. To use it, your playback equipment must have the same inputs labeled AUDIO IN.
HDMI
HDMI is a modern and up-to-date connector designed to transmit video and audio signals in good quality over a single wire. There are usually several such ports on modern TVs.
Everything seems to be simple here: on any HDMI device it looks the same as the cable to it. But you need to know that not every such connector can transmit sound from a TV to external equipment.
In theory, all HDMI 1.4 and higher ports work both ways. That is, they can broadcast sound to the speakers. But often manufacturers save money and there is an audio return channel on only one connector. Then it is signed as HDMI OUT or ARC. If you have such a marking, you can safely connect speakers to this connector. If all ports are signed as HDMI IN, the port version is unknown, and in addition a TV from an unknown Chinese manufacturer, it is better to check the functionality of the connectors in advance by experience.
The speakers that you will connect to the TV must have an HDMI input accordingly.
S/PDIF
S/PDIF or optical output. Fiber optic connector designed to work with home theaters and audio systems.
Referred to as DIGITAL AUDIO OUT, OPTICAL OUT. Your audio equipment must have an optical input to connect the other end of the cable.
Coaxial output also used for digital audio. This is a round connector labeled Digital Coaxial Out.
Connecting speakers to your TV via a digital output provides the best sound. But digital connectors are not available on all models.
MiniJack
Another way to connect speakers to your TV is to use the 3.5mm miniJack headphone output.
It connects computer speakers directly to the TV. And with the help of an adapter, you can turn on the audio system with an RCA input. This method allows you to connect modern sound to old TV receivers.
Bluetooth
And finally, a way that does not require any connectors – a wireless connection via Bluetooth. If your TV has a built-in Bluetooth adapter or you use an external USB whistle, you can use a wireless headset or speakers. True, this method does not work for audio systems like home theaters – the Bluetooth connection is unstable, so high-quality equipment still requires the use of a cable.
Which cables are needed
Everything you need to connect your audio system comes with it. In the box you will find the necessary wires. But it happens that manufacturers save money and complete the speakers only with an RCA cable, and there is no optical cable or HDMI cable. Then they will have to be purchased separately. It is better to immediately check with the seller the complete set when buying and buy the missing one.
With standard wires, you will surely understand. Let us dwell separately on hybrid connection options.
If you are going to connect your audio system to the 3.5mm output, you will need an RCA to miniJack adapter cable.
To connect to the SCART connector, you will need an adapter with a comb on one end and tulips on the other:
Or a SCART-HDMI cable if you plan to connect a system with such an input.
You can buy this adapter instead of a cable:
They are different. Including, with several types of connectors at once. With their help, almost any equipment can be connected to the SCART output.
You may need to purchase an HDMI to RCA cable.
It will help you connect, for example, speakers with HDMI input to a TV that does not have such an output, is occupied by another device or does not work.
Connecting active speakers
Active speakers are loudspeakers with a built-in amplifier. They do not require additional equipment and are the easiest to connect. An RCA cable is usually used to connect to a TV. The speakers from the computer are connected with a miniJack plug to the headphone output. Since such a connector is not available on most modern LCD panels, purchase an adapter from a “tulip” to a 3.5 mm jack in advance.
Connect the speakers to the TV, plug the power cord into a socket. In such audio systems, there is usually one active speaker, in which an amplifier and a power supply are built. It has a volume control and a power button.
No setup required when using analog RCA or miniJack outputs. Digital out or HDMI may need to be activated in the menu. It depends on the TV model.
Turn on the speakers. TV sound will play through them. The built-in speakers are automatically turned off.
Connecting passive speakers
The difference between passive acoustics is the absence of a built-in amplifier. It is purchased separately and is a separate device with a power supply and controls. The sound parameters are adjusted on the amplifier.
Passive speakers are connected to the amplifier through tulips or clamps (screw or snap-on). The input can be any, depending on the model – RCA, HDMI or digital. There are even wireless amplifiers that you can connect to via Bluetooth.
To connect a passive audio system, connect the speakers, amplifier and TV with wires. Power on all devices. Everything should work.
Music center connection
Music center is a set of speakers of different types that provide high-quality sound. Budget options are connected via miniJack or RCA. Advanced models use HDMI or digital input.
Connecting a music center is no different from the same operation with conventional active speakers. It is enough to connect the audio device with a suitable cable to the TV directly or through an adapter and turn on the power.
Connecting a stereo system
A stereo system is a set of passive speakers and a multi-channel amplifier. Speakers vary in size and sound. One of them is low frequency. It’s called a subwoofer. The number of columns may vary. There are systems 2.1 (two speakers and a subwoofer), 5.1 (four speakers and a subwoofer), 7.1. The most advanced stereo system is called home theater. By placing its elements in different places in the room, you can achieve high sound quality.
The speakers are connected by wires to the amplifier, if it is external, or to the subwoofer that performs its function. Connecting to a TV can be done in different ways. Most often, to ensure the best sound quality, use the digital output.
The system can be controlled using the controls on the subwoofer. Home theaters often have their own remote control.
Connecting wireless speakers
To connect a wireless speaker, your TV must have a Bluetooth adapter. Many Smart TVs have it built-in. If not, use a compatible USB module.
Turn on the speaker. In order to start pairing devices, you may need to additionally press the Bluetooth activation button. Or hold down the power button for a few seconds. The procedure is described in the instructions for your audio device.
Your TV may also have different pairing options depending on the model. Most often, you need to enter the sound settings, select a wireless device, wait until your speaker is displayed, click on it and click “Connect”.
If you can’t figure out how to connect, look for the instructions for your TV model.
Pairing only needs to be done once. Then the column will be connected automatically.
Connection features by models
Now we will tell you how to output sound to external speakers on TVs from different manufacturers.
LG TV
There are many ways to connect speakers to your LG TV. Here is a typical Smart TV panel from this manufacturer.
There is an optical output, three HDMI connectors, “tulips”, SCART and a headphone output. Connect your speakers with a suitable cable. Use an adapter if necessary.
To complete the configuration of connecting external speakers to LG TV, enter the menu, click the gear icon, then the icon with three dashes and select “Sound”. In the Audio Out section, select Audio Out (Optical/HDMI ARC) if one of these connectors is used. Here, activate the SIMPLINK mode.
If you have speakers that support LG Sound Sync (Sound Sync), click on “LG Sound Sync (Optical)” (if you have a Bluetooth speaker, then “LG Sound Sync (Wireless)”).
Samsung TV
To connect your speakers to your Samsung TV, use any available option – optical, RCA or HDMI. In modern models, all these connectors are available.
If you use an optical output or Bluetooth speakers, you need to specify the playback device in the sound settings. To do this, use the remote control to enter the Samsung TV menu, press the gear, find the “Sound” section (speaker image) and click “Loudspeaker settings.” / “Select speaker”. Here, select an optical output or a bluetooth device from the list.
Philips TV
To connect your sound system to your Philips TV, use HDMI with ARC technology, digital output or headphone jack.
When connecting via HDMI, enter the TV settings, open the general settings, the EasyLink item and enable this option. To make it automatically activated when you connect an audio system, in the “TV Settings” menu, go to the “Sound” – “Advanced” – “TV Speakers” section and activate “Autostart EasyLink”.
Now you need to enable HDMI audio. In the same section, enable the “HDMI ARC” option.
When using the digital output under TV Speakers, set the source to Optical if you have an optical cable, or Digital/COAX for a coaxial cable.
On Philips TVs, the built-in speakers do not turn off automatically when an external audio system is connected. They must be turned off manually through the menu “TV Settings” – “Sound” – “Advanced” – “TV Speakers”.
Problems and Solutions
No sound is heard through the HDMI port. You need to check if the audio output through this connector is enabled in the menu. You may be connecting to HDMI, which does not output sound to speakers. The port must be signed HDMI OUT or ARC. The worst option is that the TV manufacturer saved money and made all the ports without a return audio channel. Or the HDMI version in this TV model is below 1.4. In this case, you will have to use a different connection method.
Connection to SCART via adapter does not work.
