Paper for promotional products – All about paper
The reasons for printing advertising can be different. Although this is always information that is distributed to draw attention to the object of advertising.
The choice of paper for advertising printing is often the result of creative, design work to create an information product, and sometimes advertising information needs to be conveyed by simple and cheap means. Advertising can be embedded in all printed publications: newspapers, magazines, books, calendars. Can be applied to stationery: notebooks, notepads, calendars, etc. In all these cases, the paper on which it is printed must correspond to the printing used, and not violate the functional properties of the product in which it was placed.
Judging by the analytical reviews, the print advertising market is declining. In it, an increasing share, pushing aside traditional printing, is occupied by digital printing.
If we talk about advertising as a product, then there are several options that to a certain extent determine the functional properties of this product.
Advertisement for a short period of use
Advertisement, for a short period of use , such as information about discounts, vacancies, current events, etc. These can be leaflets, non-multi-page collections, sometimes stapled, there can also be multi-page brochures on a paper clip or with a glued spine.
Leaflets. Everything would be fine if the neighbors didn’t scoop them out of the mailboxes on the floor…
Advertising in newspapers and magazines is well known to everyone, which is effective and in demand.
Advertising in a newspaper is prompt, useful for both the reader and the newspaper …
Offset is used to print such publications, and digital printing is increasingly being used, but for it I recommend using, after a preliminary test, pure cellulose offset or special paper for inkjet or laser printing ( paper for digital printing will be a separate post). The choice of paper must be guided by the goal that you are pursuing and the available budget. Any paper from newsprint to lightly coated book and magazine paper with wood pulp content can be used. It makes no sense to choose a mass of a meter of square paper above 65 grams, but if the print is double-sided, then you need to evaluate what the mutual influence of the print on the front and back will be and, if necessary, increase the mass of paper by 5–10 grams to ensure the required opacity. True, printing can say its word here – not everyone knows how to print on thin paper. You can see our post about printing problems here on the site.
label or magazine paper may be suitable for printing such promotional items. In Russia, label paper is produced in accordance with GOST 7625–86 and the specifications of manufacturing enterprises. The bulk of the paper is imported from abroad. We wrote about book-magazine paper in a special post.
A wide variety of requirements, which are determined by different conditions of use, has led to a wide range of label paper grades.
The characteristics of label paper are determined by surface treatment (uncoated and pigmented or coated), finish (smooth on one or both sides, embossed), water resistance (non-wet strength, wet strength, with different water absorption values when wetted), oils and fats (sometimes greaseproof) manufacturability in printing, varnishing, creasing, laminating, metallization, die-cutting. The mass of 1 meter of square label paper varies within (45–100) grams.
Posters and posters
Among advertising with a short period of use, I would single out posters and posters . This is wall, poster, often large-format advertising, which can be indoors (indoors) and outdoors, exposed to climatic influences. The difference between a poster and a poster is that the poster is more of an informational printed publication – “Announcement about a performance, concert, movie, lecture, etc.” (Dictionary of S.I. Ozhegov), a poster is an artistically designed poster used for advertising, decorative purposes, this is a poster as a collectible. Thus, in the poster, the emphasis is on artistry. We also note that both of these products can be used for a long time, if we mean collectors and lovers of decorating the interior. This is sometimes not so much an advertising publication as a work of art. It is not for nothing that exhibitions of posters and posters are so popular.
Poster paper is produced according to GOST 11836–76 “Poster and ticket paper” . The age of the standard has exceeded 40 years, but it is immortal, because the limitation of validity has been removed from it. This is a thin paper of one-sided smoothness, weighing 1 square meter 40 grams. It is quite suitable for advertising for several days, especially if the poster is protected from gusty wind and rain.
A large selection of papers is available for printing the now popular posters.
Offset paper, uncoated and coated, weighing 1 square meter from 80 to 250 grams, is quite suitable for indoor advertising. When offset printing illustrations, you need to choose paper according to the resistance of the surface to plucking. If only textual information is printed or there are simple illustrations without overprinting, occupying small areas, a surface resistance to plucking of at least 1.7 m/s may be sufficient. If multi-color illustrations are printed with an overlay of colors, then the indicator should be higher, at least 2. 5 m / s.
When using coated paper, it is necessary to check its resistance to temperature effects in the fixing units. I would not recommend single-sided coating without an anti-curl coating due to the danger of curling both before and after printing.
Manufacturers of offset paper in Russia
There are several enterprises that have many years of experience in the production of offset paper:
- Ilim group, a branch in Koryazhma, Kotlas Pulp and Paper Mill;
- CJSC International Paper Svetogorsky Pulp and Paper Mill, Leningrad Region;
- “Mondi SYK” in Syktyvkar;
- JSC Goznak Krasnoka paper mill, Krasnokamsk, Perm Territory. Favorably differs by the ability to supply paper in accordance with the wishes of the customer in the format of rolls and sheets and in a wide range of weights of 1 square meter. Delivery of color paper is possible;
- OOO PPM Kama, Krasnokamsk, offset paper containing bleached wood pulp.
Outdoor and indoor advertising
We offer a large selection of poster and interior paper for inkjet printing of street posters and posters from foreign suppliers. On digital machines, it is still preferable to print on special paper for inkjet printing, and not on offset, label and other non-profile paper for a printing device. This, in addition to non-guaranteed print quality, will save equipment from failure. The mass range of 1 square meter of such types of paper is 80–220 grams. Paper is rolled and sheet.
To print advertising posters photo-quality and higher photo-realistic quality for printing on digital inkjet presses, then you need to turn to photo paper for high resolution printing. These types of paper are supplied to our market only by foreign manufacturers, mainly from European countries. Paper is sheet, but more often in rolls. Roll width up to 2.95 meters. Weight of paper from 80 to 220 grams per square meter. However, it is better not to use laser devices due to the high temperature and pressure in the image fixing units.
If you plan to use the product outdoors, you need to pay attention to the resistance of the paper and its coating to sunlight (UV) rays and moisture. Resistance to printing smearing when moisture gets on it, in fact, should be on any printed publication. Unexpected and unpleasant is the sometimes occurring blurring of the image in rainy weather, while you carry advertising from a store or mailbox home. You need to make sure that the ink is moisture resistant and will not spread when it rains and the paper itself will not lose its presentation. For outdoor use, paper requires lamination.
There is a special translucent (translucent) poster paper on the market for stands (pedestals) with highlights in rooms. The paper has a very even (“milky”) gap and intensively scatters the light falling on it, increasing the contrast of the image.
Company brochures, calendars, notebooks, diaries, etc. Here the presence of one’s style, recognition is welcomed. A design solution is often found in the use of different types of paper (different in weight 1 square meter, color, uncoated and coated, design), cover, pages on film, full or local varnishing, foil pressing, embossing. Cardboards are often used.
A large selection of colored types of paper with a wide range of weights of 1 square meter (from 50 to 235 grams) and a long range of colors (over 20) is produced by JSC Goznak at the Krasnokamsk and St. Petersburg paper mills. The latter makes paper with different surface textures.
In a design impulse, one should not forget that if the materials used will carry printed information, one must take into account the need to meet their requirements for a printing machine. In addition, there is still post-print processing – cutting, gluing, die-cutting, creasing, embossing, perforation, etc. These operations also require taking into account the properties of the paper. There is also a post on our website about post-printing operations and the impact of paper on them.
Let’s consider self-adhesive types of paper separately.
Self-adhesive, which means that they do not require activation by wetting or temperature exposure, but are glued when surfaces are joined with their subsequent squeezing.
Self-adhesive paper consists of three main layers:
- surface paper, bearing printed information;
- adhesive layer;
- silicone-coated release paper to protect the adhesive layer.
Self-adhesive paper is used for printing high-quality advertising, including outdoor and on transport, when designing exhibition stands.
Self-adhesive changed the exhibition space
Uncoated offset paper, weighing 1 square meter 70–80 grams, supercalendered can be used as a surface, printed layer. This paper is suitable for all types of printing, including digital and screen printing. Paper grades with one-sided pigmentation or light coating are widespread on devices built into the paper machine weighing 1 square meter 80–90 grams. They can be printed in full color. The whiteness of these materials is 90-95% Elrepho at a gloss of (60-65)%.
High-end (high-end) quality products are printed with coated paper grades, as well as heavier cast-coated paper (when printing on the latter, quick-drying inks may be required).
Uses colored papers and embossed surfaces. We also note paper laminated with aluminum foil as a cover material.
A number of self-adhesive materials have been developed for printing on digital printing machines and office printers, having a reduced thickness.
Self-adhesive paper is one of the types that is produced in Russia only using most of the components purchased abroad. Very special technologies are used in the production of release paper, adhesives, intermediate primer layers. The top layer is label or offset paper, produced by Russian manufacturers themselves.
The adhesive used in self-adhesive materials largely determines their properties and purpose. Adhesives are first of all subdivided depending on their action into permanent and removable. Permanent adhesives are characterized by high adhesion to the bonded surface: removal of the sticker leads to its tearing.
Removable Adhesives are used when it is necessary to remove the sticker without traces or save it for reuse.
To successfully work with self-adhesive materials, certain conditions must be met.
A few tips for working with self-adhesive paper or film.
When cutting and punching self-adhesive materials :
- it is necessary to keep the knife blade clean, prevent damage, and ensure high quality sharpening;
- the cutting force of the guillotine cut should be as low as possible;
- maximum stack height when cutting – 60 – 80 mm;
- The use of silicone grease is recommended to prevent adhesive buildup on the knife blade.
When storing self-adhesive sheets :
- storage is carried out in the same way as storage of printed papers;
- it is recommended to keep the climatic storage conditions constant: – temperature 18–23 about C and relative air humidity 50–55%;
- sheets should preferably be stored on shelves, away from heaters and direct sunlight;
- when stored in one pile, the number of sheets should not exceed 10,000;
- boxes and film packages in which materials are stored must be kept closed to maintain a constant moisture content of the material;
- Self-adhesive materials must be acclimatized in the press room before printing. Acclimatization time depends on the temperature difference between storage and printing, as well as the volume of packs of materials;
- Self adhesive rolls must be stored in an upright position.
There is also a large array of advertising on paper and cardboard packaging, here a wide variety of paper and cardboard types are used. For them, in the first place – ensuring the safety and security of packaged products or products. It is probably worth talking about packaging from the point of view of ensuring packaging properties. Maybe we’ll get back to this conversation.
It is important not to forget about post-press operations and their paper requirements! Watch here!
And more about the influence of the external environment on paper is here.
