  • Why isn’t my Ring PRO working? What is wrong with your Power Supply?

    The Ring PRO is a very sophisticated and feature packed video doorbell.  Lots of people love its functionality.  However, in working with many customers, we have discovered some potential issues with the Ring PRO that may cause it to not work as expected.  Most importantly, a small percentage of Ring PROs do not function properly upon installation.  Sometimes they work for a short period of time and then stop.  Other times they get slightly hot or show insufficient power.  These are issues unrelated to our Power Supply.   
    If you have an issue with your Ring PRO, please let us know and we will work with you as best we can.  However, also understand that the issue may be with the Ring PRO itself and you may have to exchange it for a different unit.  Before you consider that option however please go through the following checklist:

    Did you purchase the correct Power Supply? Please check to make sure you have the correct model.   The Ring PRO will not work if connected to the Power Supply designed for the original Ring.
    Does the outlet have power? Plug a lamp or another device into the outlet to ensure it has power.  Sometimes the issue is simply that a light switch was turned off by accident.
    Are there any loose connections? The wires need to be securely attached to the Ring PRO. Please remove it and reinstall, double checking that the wires are securely attached to the screws and that the Ring PRO clicks in securely.
    Is anything else, such as the Pro Power Kit, connected to the bell? If so, it will not work. The Power Supply should be the only thing connected to the Ring PRO.
    Did you select the “No Chime” option upon installation? Selecting the wrong mode may cause the Ring PRO not to work.  If you are not sure, please reset the Ring PRO and restart installation, being sure to follow the instructions provided with your Power Supply.
    Was the Power Supply inadvertently shorted during installation? This may happen if it was plugged in prior to installation and the wires touched. Please let us know and we will provide a new harness.
    Was the button on the Ring PRO pressed for 10 seconds or more? Doing this may cause a short.
    If you have a multimeter, please check the power output. Let us know what you find and we will guide you through the issue.

    Answering these questions will help us troubleshoot and solve your problem. If the issue is with the Power Supply, we will provide a free replacement.  However, if the issue is with the Ring PRO, you may need to exchange it.

Doorbells are designed to notify the owners of the dwelling about the arrival of guests or visitors. The arrival alarm is constantly changing as technology advances. The first bells had a simple mechanical design, which continued to improve until the time when electricity came into everyday life.

Mechanical bell

The principle of operation of the simplest electric bell

The very first home bells were based on the phenomenon of electromagnetism and still exist with some modifications. The bell device includes an electromagnet, which, when current passes through it, attracts an anchor (metal plate) with a hammer attached to it, a small metal weight. Deviating, the hammer hits a metal cup, a bell, making a sound.

At the same time, the armature is connected to a group of contacts and, in case of deviation, opens them. The opening of the contacts leads to the termination of the current through the electromagnet, and the armature, under the action of the spring, returns back, again closing the contacts. This process continues as long as the bell button is pressed, which closes the power supply circuit of the electromagnet. The button is located outside the room in such a way that the visitor can get it by hand.

The frequency of blows of the doorbell hammer on the cup depends on the mass of the weight, the stiffness of the return spring and the distance from the hammer to the cup. By adjusting these elements, you can achieve not only the desired frequency, but to some extent the sound volume.

Simplest design

In some designs, two metal cups are installed so that the hammer hits one of them, being attracted to the electromagnet, and the other, returning to its place. A wire bell of such a simple design has existed for decades and is highly reliable.

Please note! Older telephones with rotary dialers have completely similar ringing. This has led to many hobbyists converting phone chimes to function as door alarms. The essence of the alteration was to adapt the electromagnet to work with an alternating current network (the call voltage in the telephone line is 80-100V).

This doorbell design operates directly from 220V AC. On the one hand, this simplifies the design and connection, eliminating the need to install a power supply, on the other hand, there is a risk of electric shock, especially if the call button is installed outside, on the front door or gate. It is for this reason that network calls are predominantly distributed in apartments where moisture is unlikely to get on them.

Interesting. The simplicity of the design causes such a disadvantage as the impossibility of setting a different melody.

It is possible to consider the types of doorbells from several points of view. The following can be distinguished:

Most of the produced modern bells are based on electronic circuits without the participation of mechanical elements. The use of specialized integrated circuits made it possible to introduce the ability to switch between melodies stored in the IC memory, to adjust the volume. As a sound-emitting element, conventional electromagnetic speakers or piezo emitters can be used. The latter are preferred, since they have a very high reliability and are unpretentious to operating conditions.

Wired bells

Wired doorbell is an improved version of a simple bell. It is characterized by high reliability, but depends on an external power supply. Only a few models are powered by batteries or accumulators. The main disadvantage is the need to lay wires from the button to the signaling device. In apartments, this is not of decisive importance, since both components of the bell are located simply on both sides of the front door.

In private houses, the length of the connecting wires can reach a considerable length, since usually the button is installed on the doors of a private courtyard.

Wireless devices

Wireless calls are deprived of this shortcoming, in which the signaling of pressing a button works via a radio channel. How does a wireless call work? For this purpose, the external unit has a miniature radio transmitter with a limited range, and the apartment part of the bell contains a radio receiver tuned to the frequency of the transmitter. Since no information is transmitted during the call, the circuitry of the receiver and transmitter is very simple.

Since the wireless call has a low transmitter power, the range is several tens of meters. This is usually sufficient, but problems may arise if there is an obstruction that shields the radio wave. Reinforced concrete walls of apartments and metal entrance doors can serve as such a barrier. It often happens that the button and the ringing part, located on both sides of the wall, stop interacting at the slightest decrease in power, or even do not work at all. The only way out here is to install a push-button doorbell.

Power supply

According to the principle of power organization, the vast majority of bell models are designed to operate from built-in power sources – batteries or accumulators. A distinctive feature of such devices is complete independence from the presence of voltage in the supply network. The power consumption of the bell on batteries is negligible, so they do not often need to be replaced. The wireless doorbell can work for several years without changing batteries.

A negative feature of chemical current sources is their strong temperature dependence. When the ambient temperature drops to negative values, the battery capacity drops to such values ​​that the normal operation of the device becomes impossible.

Devices that require an external power supply have a built-in power supply. In this case, in the event of a power failure, the call is inoperable. External power is mainly used by wired modifications, although such models are also found among wireless ones. The ringing part of such devices has standard pins on the back of the case, designed to be connected to an ordinary power outlet. In this case, the call module still needs a battery, with all its advantages and disadvantages.

Video calls

With the development of microelectronics, a completely new class of devices has appeared, which, together with the signaling of the arrival of visitors, are capable of transmitting an image from a miniature video camera. This device, according to its consumer characteristics, is close to intercoms and in some cases can replace them.

Structurally, the video call also consists of a remote unit and an apartment module. Only in this case, it has the ability to form, transmit and receive a video image.

Video call

The transmission of a picture, especially a moving picture, requires a large amount of data, so a special cable is required for wired devices. Wireless communication between units can be done in several ways:

  • Via Wi-Fi;
  • Using GPRS protocol;
  • On a regular radio channel.

The most perfect system of transmission using Wi-Fi, since the use of a network of mobile operators requires regular financial expenses, and the quality of communication is not always satisfactory. The use of a radio channel can be difficult due to the great complexity of transceivers.

How to connect electricity to the site?

Any model of doorbell is easy to install by yourself – no adjustment is required, except for choosing the desired melody.

The easiest way to install a wireless bell on the front door. Most often, such structures are mounted on double tape, so all the work comes down to choosing the installation site. It may be necessary to remove the factory protection from the installed battery. New batteries and accumulators must be installed with strict polarity.

Important! Although the design of the button, according to the manufacturers, is hermetic, it is worth taking care that water does not get on the block. This applies not only to wireless calls, but to all others.

Wired bell requires provision for laying connecting wires between the button and bell parts. Usually there are no restrictions on the length of the wires, but very thin ones should not be used, as this may adversely affect their reliability. Before installing a wired structure, you should carefully read the installation instructions and the inscriptions on the connection terminals on the bell.

Simple bell connection

When a wired bell is installed near the entrance door in the apartment, it is possible to install parts of the bell opposite each other on opposite sides of the wall. This option is the simplest, since the wires from the button pass through the hole in the wall directly to the alarm device.
