The fact that there isn’t any electrical work required for the battery and solar options, makes it one of the easiest smart doorbells to install. You also save a decent amount of cash by avoiding electricians’ hourly rates.

The Ring Doorbell has a built-in battery that lasts 6 to 12 months depending on how busy your front entrance is.
Many people report having to replace their battery after only 2 to 3 months and for that reason, I would make use of the wired power option you have available.
If you are not going to make use of any wiring or the solar option to power you Ring Doorbell and only run it off the batteries then you need to follow the following guidelines.
- It’s important to recharge your battery before it runs completely flat otherwise you may need to do some setup steps over again.

Once your Ring Doorbell is fully charged, disconnect the USB and place the doorbell over the mounting bracket screwing it in with the two screws you removed from the bottom.
- You will need to recharge your battery every 6 to 12 months depending on how much activity you have going on in front of your house in the camera’s view. Some people find that they need to replace the battery in half this amount of time. In my opinion, this is still not too bad though.
- If you find that your battery is running flat too often and you’re recharging it every month or two, adjust the motion settings in the Ring App as there maybe leaves, moths, and other things setting off your sensors unnecessarily.
Connecting your Ring Doorbell to your house’s power. You can connect it to your previous doorbell electrical wires to continuously charge the battery and only make use of it if the house power goes off.

Whether you’re replacing an existing electrical doorbell or fitting the Ring Doorbell to new wiring, you should hire an electrician to do the job.
Any electrical work has a high-risk factor not only to the person who works on the project but also to the house as a whole. If things aren’t done correctly you can cause fires long after the installation is complete.
By allowing electricians to do all electrical work, you can save on huge medical bills from injuries. The job will be done correctly the first time and your home insurance won’t have many reasons not to pay you out if anything bad happens. Like a fire caused by faulty unauthorized wiring.
The Ring Doorbell has an option to connect a solar power panel bracket to extend the battery life of the unit.
They do claim that with only a few hours of direct sunlight per day, it will stay fully charged but I find that many people are complaining about having to still replace batteries.
The advantage of the solar panels is that battery replacements are less frequent than what they would’ve been without solar assistance.
You don’t need to be an electrician to attach the solar bracket to the Ring Doorbell, just follow these instructions:
- First, you’ll need to remove your Ring Doorbell and its mounting bracket from the wall. Loosen the screws at the bottom of the doorbell and slip it up and over the mounting bracket.
- Unscrew the mounting bracket from the wall.
- Place your Ring solar charger over the original holes of the doorbell and mount it using the screws included.
- Once the solar charge is securely mounted, plug the attached USB cable from the solar charger into the port at the back of the Ring Doorbell.
- Now clip the Ring Doorbell into the solar charger and press downwards to fix it into place.
- Replace the screws which you removed back into the bottom of the doorbell and you’re done.
Now that your Ring Doorbell is charged by the sun, you won’t have to recharge batteries or connect it with wires.
If you find that you still need to recharge batteries every now and then, adjust your motion sensors so that they don’t pick up things like falling leaves or birds flying past.
Your battery life will be significantly affected if your sensors are reporting movement all day long.
Get An Uninterrupted Power Supply For Wi-Fi
In addition to having a built-in battery for your Ring Doorbell, you should also get an uninterrupted power supply for your Wi-fi router.
Remember, if your power goes out at your house, the doorbell won’t be able to communicate with you through the internet as your wi-fi will be off without back-up power. It won’t record what is happening or do anything useful if there is no internet connection.

Why isn’t my Ring PRO working? What is wrong with your Power Supply?
The Ring PRO is a very sophisticated and feature packed video doorbell. Lots of people love its functionality. However, in working with many customers, we have discovered some potential issues with the Ring PRO that may cause it to not work as expected. Most importantly, a small percentage of Ring PROs do not function properly upon installation. Sometimes they work for a short period of time and then stop. Other times they get slightly hot or show insufficient power. These are issues unrelated to our Power Supply.
If you have an issue with your Ring PRO, please let us know and we will work with you as best we can. However, also understand that the issue may be with the Ring PRO itself and you may have to exchange it for a different unit. Before you consider that option however please go through the following checklist:
Did you purchase the correct Power Supply? Please check to make sure you have the correct model. The Ring PRO will not work if connected to the Power Supply designed for the original Ring.
Does the outlet have power? Plug a lamp or another device into the outlet to ensure it has power. Sometimes the issue is simply that a light switch was turned off by accident.
Are there any loose connections? The wires need to be securely attached to the Ring PRO. Please remove it and reinstall, double checking that the wires are securely attached to the screws and that the Ring PRO clicks in securely.
Is anything else, such as the Pro Power Kit, connected to the bell? If so, it will not work. The Power Supply should be the only thing connected to the Ring PRO.
Did you select the “No Chime” option upon installation? Selecting the wrong mode may cause the Ring PRO not to work. If you are not sure, please reset the Ring PRO and restart installation, being sure to follow the instructions provided with your Power Supply.
Was the Power Supply inadvertently shorted during installation? This may happen if it was plugged in prior to installation and the wires touched. Please let us know and we will provide a new harness.
Was the button on the Ring PRO pressed for 10 seconds or more? Doing this may cause a short.
If you have a multimeter, please check the power output. Let us know what you find and we will guide you through the issue.

The principle of operation of the simplest electric bell
The very first home bells were based on the phenomenon of electromagnetism and still exist with some modifications. The frequency of blows of the doorbell hammer on the cup depends on the mass of the weight, the stiffness of the return spring and the distance from the hammer to the cup. By adjusting these elements, you can achieve not only the desired frequency, but to some extent the sound volume.
In some designs, two metal cups are installed so that the hammer hits one of them, being attracted to the electromagnet, and the other, returning to its place. A wire bell of such a simple design has existed for decades and is highly reliable.

Since no information is transmitted during the call, the circuitry of the receiver and transmitter is very simple.
Since the wireless call has a low transmitter power, the range is several tens of meters. This is usually sufficient, but problems may arise if there is an obstruction that shields the radio wave. Reinforced concrete walls of apartments and metal entrance doors can serve as such a barrier. It often happens that the button and the ringing part, located on both sides of the wall, stop interacting at the slightest decrease in power, or even do not work at all. The only way out here is to install a push-button doorbell.
According to the principle of power organization, the vast majority of bell models are designed to operate from built-in power sources – batteries or accumulators. A distinctive feature of such devices is complete independence from the presence of voltage in the supply network. The power consumption of the bell on batteries is negligible, so they do not often need to be replaced. The wireless doorbell can work for several years without changing batteries.
A negative feature of chemical current sources is their strong temperature dependence. When the ambient temperature drops to negative values, the battery capacity drops to such values that the normal operation of the device becomes impossible.
Devices that require an external power supply have a built-in power supply. In this case, in the event of a power failure, the call is inoperable. External power is mainly used by wired modifications, although such models are also found among wireless ones. Any model of doorbell is easy to install by yourself – no adjustment is required, except for choosing the desired melody.
The easiest way to install a wireless bell on the front door. Most often, such structures are mounted on double tape, so all the work comes down to choosing the installation site. It may be necessary to remove the factory protection from the installed battery. New batteries and accumulators must be installed with strict polarity.
Important! Although the design of the button, according to the manufacturers, is hermetic, it is worth taking care that water does not get on the block. This applies not only to wireless calls, but to all others.
Wired bell requires provision for laying connecting wires between the button and bell parts.
