Ring doorbell power supply: Wasserstein Smart Doorbells 8.2ft/2.5m UL Power Supply Adapter — Wasserstein Home

Does Ring Doorbell Need Power?

The Ring Doorbell has become one of the most popular 21st-century doorbells to date. It’s no mystery why they so popular with HD quality video from your front door to your cell phone and two-way communication at the same time, video doorbells ensure that you always know exactly what’s going on at the main entrance of your house.

Does the Ring Doorbell need power? No, the Ring Doorbell doesn’t need power connected to it. It works off a built-in rechargeable battery and has an option to connect to electrical wires. The battery life is 6 to 12 months depending on the activity at your door. It also has solar power options.

The fact that there isn’t any electrical work required for the battery and solar options, makes it one of the easiest smart doorbells to install. You also save a decent amount of cash by avoiding electricians’ hourly rates.

Don’t take chances with electrical work to save cash if you are going to connect it to the house power though. Pay an electrician to do the job professionally.

The fact that the Ring Doorbell has an option to be hardwired into your home is excellent because this will mean that your built-in battery can be preserved and used as a back-up solution only when the power goes out for any reason. Get an uninterrupted power supply to back up your wi-fi power as well otherwise, your Ring Doorbell won’t serve any purpose.

The Ring Doorbell even has a solar-powered option which will at very least extend your battery life but in very sunny conditions can sustain your doorbell power requirements permanently.

Another advantage of the solar charging bracket is that you don’t need any electrical knowledge to attach it. The solar charger becomes the new wall mounting bracket for the Ring Doorbell so all you need to do is slip the doorbell over the solar bracket for an easy installation.

How To Prevent Solar Panel Theft?

What Power Options Do I Have For My Ring Doorbell?

Built-in battery

The best way to use the Ring Doorbell system is to have it wired physically to your house power and then have the built-in battery only run as a backup power supply.

The Ring Doorbell has a built-in battery that lasts 6 to 12 months depending on how busy your front entrance is.

Many people report having to replace their battery after only 2 to 3 months and for that reason, I would make use of the wired power option you have available.

If you are not going to make use of any wiring or the solar option to power you Ring Doorbell and only run it off the batteries then you need to follow the following guidelines.

  • It’s important to recharge your battery before it runs completely flat otherwise you may need to do some setup steps over again.
  • You will receive multiple alerts via email and on your Ring App warning you to charge your battery before it dies.
  • To recharge your battery, remove the two screws at the bottom of the doorbell and slide the doorbell up and over the mounting bracket. Use a micro USB cable to connect the doorbell to a USB power source. 2.1Amp wall charger is recommended as this will charge your doorbell within 4 to 5 hours. A computer USB port will work as well but takes longer to charge the battery. (Up to 12 hours) While charging, the round indicator light on the front of the doorbell will indicate the charge percentage. It’s fully charged when the circular light is solid blue. The battery percentage on your Ring app won’t relate properly to the battery’s actual charge while being charged. This is because the battery percentage only updates every time there is an event for the doorbell like when it picks up motion or when it rings. Once your Ring Doorbell is fully charged, disconnect the USB and place the doorbell over the mounting bracket screwing it in with the two screws you removed from the bottom.
  • You will need to recharge your battery every 6 to 12 months depending on how much activity you have going on in front of your house in the camera’s view. Some people find that they need to replace the battery in half this amount of time. In my opinion, this is still not too bad though.
  • If you find that your battery is running flat too often and you’re recharging it every month or two, adjust the motion settings in the Ring App as there maybe leaves, moths, and other things setting off your sensors unnecessarily.

Wired connection

Connecting your Ring Doorbell to your house’s power. You can connect it to your previous doorbell electrical wires to continuously charge the battery and only make use of it if the house power goes off.

Connect to 8-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz only. No halogen or garden-lighting transformers and no DC transformer/power supplies.

  • Make sure to switch off your power source to the doorbell wiring before replacing the doorbell

To connect your Ring Doorbell to your previous electrical doorbell wiring, carefully remove the old doorbell and disconnect the wiring from it. The same wiring you will attach to the Ring Doorbell.

Now you have your primary Ring Doorbell power source exposed. Connect your wiring carefully as per the instruction manual and insulate the wiring with electrical tape.

Secure the Ring Doorbell to the wall after connecting the wires.

If you don’t have an existing electrical doorbell that you’re going to replace, you need to contact an electrician to do the installation for you.

Electrical Work Should Be Done By Electricians

Whether you’re replacing an existing electrical doorbell or fitting the Ring Doorbell to new wiring, you should hire an electrician to do the job.

Any electrical work has a high-risk factor not only to the person who works on the project but also to the house as a whole. If things aren’t done correctly you can cause fires long after the installation is complete.

By allowing electricians to do all electrical work, you can save on huge medical bills from injuries. The job will be done correctly the first time and your home insurance won’t have many reasons not to pay you out if anything bad happens. Like a fire caused by faulty unauthorized wiring.

Solar assistance

The Ring Doorbell has an option to connect a solar power panel bracket to extend the battery life of the unit.

They do claim that with only a few hours of direct sunlight per day, it will stay fully charged but I find that many people are complaining about having to still replace batteries.

The advantage of the solar panels is that battery replacements are less frequent than what they would’ve been without solar assistance.

You don’t need to be an electrician to attach the solar bracket to the Ring Doorbell, just follow these instructions:

  • First, you’ll need to remove your Ring Doorbell and its mounting bracket from the wall. Loosen the screws at the bottom of the doorbell and slip it up and over the mounting bracket.
  • Unscrew the mounting bracket from the wall.
  • Place your Ring solar charger over the original holes of the doorbell and mount it using the screws included.
  • Once the solar charge is securely mounted, plug the attached USB cable from the solar charger into the port at the back of the Ring Doorbell.
  • Now clip the Ring Doorbell into the solar charger and press downwards to fix it into place.
  • Replace the screws which you removed back into the bottom of the doorbell and you’re done.

Now that your Ring Doorbell is charged by the sun, you won’t have to recharge batteries or connect it with wires.

If you find that you still need to recharge batteries every now and then, adjust your motion sensors so that they don’t pick up things like falling leaves or birds flying past.

Your battery life will be significantly affected if your sensors are reporting movement all day long.

Get An Uninterrupted Power Supply For Wi-Fi

In addition to having a built-in battery for your Ring Doorbell, you should also get an uninterrupted power supply for your Wi-fi router.

Remember, if your power goes out at your house, the doorbell won’t be able to communicate with you through the internet as your wi-fi will be off without back-up power. It won’t record what is happening or do anything useful if there is no internet connection.

This one on Amazon features a 600VA / 330W of back up power. It has 7 outlets for different electronics to be plugged in along with the router. It has one USB charging port. A 3 to 5-year battery life and is backed by APC’s 3-YEAR warranty, plus a $75,000 connected-equipment policy.

Conclusion: Does Ring Doorbell Need Power?

No matter your power requirement, the Ring Doorbell has the option for you.

With battery and solar-powered options, this doorbell is ideal to reach further away places on your property.

Using the battery together with a wired installation or solar charging bracket is the best way to make sure that you stay connected and aware of what’s happening at your doorstep at any time from any place.

Ask a Question

  • Why isn’t my Ring PRO working? What is wrong with your Power Supply?

    The Ring PRO is a very sophisticated and feature packed video doorbell.  Lots of people love its functionality.  However, in working with many customers, we have discovered some potential issues with the Ring PRO that may cause it to not work as expected.  Most importantly, a small percentage of Ring PROs do not function properly upon installation.  Sometimes they work for a short period of time and then stop.  Other times they get slightly hot or show insufficient power.  These are issues unrelated to our Power Supply.
    If you have an issue with your Ring PRO, please let us know and we will work with you as best we can.  However, also understand that the issue may be with the Ring PRO itself and you may have to exchange it for a different unit.  Before you consider that option however please go through the following checklist:

    Did you purchase the correct Power Supply? Please check to make sure you have the correct model.   The Ring PRO will not work if connected to the Power Supply designed for the original Ring.
    Does the outlet have power? Plug a lamp or another device into the outlet to ensure it has power.  Sometimes the issue is simply that a light switch was turned off by accident.
    Are there any loose connections? The wires need to be securely attached to the Ring PRO. Please remove it and reinstall, double checking that the wires are securely attached to the screws and that the Ring PRO clicks in securely.
    Is anything else, such as the Pro Power Kit, connected to the bell? If so, it will not work. The Power Supply should be the only thing connected to the Ring PRO.
    Did you select the “No Chime” option upon installation? Selecting the wrong mode may cause the Ring PRO not to work.  If you are not sure, please reset the Ring PRO and restart installation, being sure to follow the instructions provided with your Power Supply.
    Was the Power Supply inadvertently shorted during installation? This may happen if it was plugged in prior to installation and the wires touched. Please let us know and we will provide a new harness.
    Was the button on the Ring PRO pressed for 10 seconds or more? Doing this may cause a short.
    If you have a multimeter, please check the power output. Let us know what you find and we will guide you through the issue.

    Answering these questions will help us troubleshoot and solve your problem. If the issue is with the Power Supply, we will provide a free replacement.  However, if the issue is with the Ring PRO, you may need to exchange it.

Doorbells are designed to notify the owners of the dwelling about the arrival of guests or visitors. The arrival alarm is constantly changing as technology advances. The first bells had a simple mechanical design, which continued to improve until the time when electricity came into everyday life.

Mechanical bell

The principle of operation of the simplest electric bell

The very first home bells were based on the phenomenon of electromagnetism and still exist with some modifications. The bell device includes an electromagnet, which, when current passes through it, attracts an anchor (metal plate) with a hammer attached to it, a small metal weight. Deviating, the hammer hits a metal cup, a bell, making a sound.

At the same time, the armature is connected to a group of contacts and, in case of deviation, opens them. The opening of the contacts leads to the termination of the current through the electromagnet, and the armature, under the action of the spring, returns back, again closing the contacts. This process continues as long as the bell button is pressed, which closes the power supply circuit of the electromagnet. The button is located outside the room in such a way that the visitor can get it by hand.

The frequency of blows of the doorbell hammer on the cup depends on the mass of the weight, the stiffness of the return spring and the distance from the hammer to the cup. By adjusting these elements, you can achieve not only the desired frequency, but to some extent the sound volume.

Simplest design

In some designs, two metal cups are installed so that the hammer hits one of them, being attracted to the electromagnet, and the other, returning to its place. A wire bell of such a simple design has existed for decades and is highly reliable.

Please note! Older telephones with rotary dialers have completely similar ringing. This has led to many hobbyists converting phone chimes to function as door alarms. The essence of the alteration was to adapt the electromagnet to work with an alternating current network (the call voltage in the telephone line is 80-100V).

This doorbell design operates directly from 220V AC. On the one hand, this simplifies the design and connection, eliminating the need to install a power supply, on the other hand, there is a risk of electric shock, especially if the call button is installed outside, on the front door or gate. It is for this reason that network calls are predominantly distributed in apartments where moisture is unlikely to get on them.

Interesting. The simplicity of the design causes such a disadvantage as the impossibility of setting a different melody.

Varieties

Wire VVGNG frls

It is possible to consider the types of doorbells from several points of view. The following can be distinguished:

  • Wired;
  • Wireless;
  • Externally powered;
  • Self-powered;
  • Video calls.

Most of the produced modern bells are based on electronic circuits without the participation of mechanical elements. The use of specialized integrated circuits made it possible to introduce the ability to switch between melodies stored in the IC memory, to adjust the volume. As a sound-emitting element, conventional electromagnetic speakers or piezo emitters can be used. The latter are preferred, since they have a very high reliability and are unpretentious to operating conditions.

Wired bells

Wired doorbell is an improved version of a simple bell. It is characterized by high reliability, but depends on an external power supply. Only a few models are powered by batteries or accumulators. The main disadvantage is the need to lay wires from the button to the signaling device. In apartments, this is not of decisive importance, since both components of the bell are located simply on both sides of the front door.

Wired bell

In private houses, the length of the connecting wires can reach a considerable length, since usually the button is installed on the doors of a private courtyard.

Wireless devices

Wireless calls are deprived of this shortcoming, in which the signaling of pressing a button works via a radio channel. How does a wireless call work? For this purpose, the external unit has a miniature radio transmitter with a limited range, and the apartment part of the bell contains a radio receiver tuned to the frequency of the transmitter. Since no information is transmitted during the call, the circuitry of the receiver and transmitter is very simple.

Wireless bell

Since the wireless call has a low transmitter power, the range is several tens of meters. This is usually sufficient, but problems may arise if there is an obstruction that shields the radio wave. Reinforced concrete walls of apartments and metal entrance doors can serve as such a barrier. It often happens that the button and the ringing part, located on both sides of the wall, stop interacting at the slightest decrease in power, or even do not work at all. The only way out here is to install a push-button doorbell.

Power supply

According to the principle of power organization, the vast majority of bell models are designed to operate from built-in power sources – batteries or accumulators. A distinctive feature of such devices is complete independence from the presence of voltage in the supply network. The power consumption of the bell on batteries is negligible, so they do not often need to be replaced. The wireless doorbell can work for several years without changing batteries.

A negative feature of chemical current sources is their strong temperature dependence. When the ambient temperature drops to negative values, the battery capacity drops to such values that the normal operation of the device becomes impossible.

Devices that require an external power supply have a built-in power supply. In this case, in the event of a power failure, the call is inoperable. External power is mainly used by wired modifications, although such models are also found among wireless ones. The ringing part of such devices has standard pins on the back of the case, designed to be connected to an ordinary power outlet. In this case, the call module still needs a battery, with all its advantages and disadvantages.

Video calls

With the development of microelectronics, a completely new class of devices has appeared, which, together with the signaling of the arrival of visitors, are capable of transmitting an image from a miniature video camera. This device, according to its consumer characteristics, is close to intercoms and in some cases can replace them.

Structurally, the video call also consists of a remote unit and an apartment module. Only in this case, it has the ability to form, transmit and receive a video image.

Video call

The transmission of a picture, especially a moving picture, requires a large amount of data, so a special cable is required for wired devices. Wireless communication between units can be done in several ways:

  • Via Wi-Fi;
  • Using GPRS protocol;
  • On a regular radio channel.

The most perfect system of transmission using Wi-Fi, since the use of a network of mobile operators requires regular financial expenses, and the quality of communication is not always satisfactory. The use of a radio channel can be difficult due to the great complexity of transceivers.

Bell setting

How to connect electricity to the site?

Any model of doorbell is easy to install by yourself – no adjustment is required, except for choosing the desired melody.

The easiest way to install a wireless bell on the front door. Most often, such structures are mounted on double tape, so all the work comes down to choosing the installation site. It may be necessary to remove the factory protection from the installed battery. New batteries and accumulators must be installed with strict polarity.

Important! Although the design of the button, according to the manufacturers, is hermetic, it is worth taking care that water does not get on the block. This applies not only to wireless calls, but to all others.

Wired bell requires provision for laying connecting wires between the button and bell parts. Usually there are no restrictions on the length of the wires, but very thin ones should not be used, as this may adversely affect their reliability. Before installing a wired structure, you should carefully read the installation instructions and the inscriptions on the connection terminals on the bell.

Simple bell connection

When a wired bell is installed near the entrance door in the apartment, it is possible to install parts of the bell opposite each other on opposite sides of the wall. This option is the simplest, since the wires from the button pass through the hole in the wall directly to the alarm device. Additionally, wiring is required to the junction box or to the power outlet. During repair work, it is necessary to provide strobes for laying wires, otherwise a plastic cable channel must be used. Before connecting the wires to the network, it must be de-energized by turning off the automatic power switch on the power panel.

Important! If a doorbell is being repaired or installed on an older system with direct AC power, care must be taken when routing and securing wires. The insulation must not be broken anywhere. It is also important to observe the correct connection of the neutral and phase conductors of the installed bell.

The most practical design is the wireless home bells. Firstly, they have the simplest connection, and secondly, they do not require a separate power supply. The radio call is so easy to install and adjust that even a completely untrained person can handle it.
