Best 4K TVs for 2023, Tested and Reviewed
Purchasing a new TV can be a daunting task, especially with so many different TV options out there. In the end, most people base a decision on the price of the TV and the features it offers. One feature that has nearly become standard is 4K resolution support. It offers a better picture quality than HD TVs and is now the predominant resolution of most TVs released in recent years, so you’ll be able find it on a variety of models these days — even the best TVs under $500.
What are the best 4K TVs for all budgets?
The best 4K TV options run the gamut, encompassing a wide variety of models at budget and premium prices. One of our favorite affordable models is the TCL 4-Series, which starts at less than $300 for a 43-inch model. For a more premium pick, we love the LG OLED C2 — just keep in mind that it can get pricey.
4K resolution just means the TV has a certain number of pixels, 3,840×2,160 to be exact, along with the ability to display 4K TV shows, movies and games from streaming services, devices and game consoles like the Xbox Series X and PS5. There’s a lot more to picture quality than resolution, so you can’t ignore things like contrast, dynamic range, HDR performance and peak brightness. The best-performing TVs in our reviews excel in these areas. Additionally, if you’re looking for a gaming TV, you’ll also want to consider factors like input lag.
The list below represents the best 4K TVs (which are, let’s face it, the best TVs, period) that I’ve reviewed in CNET’s test lab, where I compare them side by side.

How CNET tests 4K TVs
Our TV reviews follow a rigorous, unbiased evaluation process honed over nearly two decades of TV reviews. Our primary TV test lab has specialized equipment for measuring light and color, including a Konica Minolta CS-2000 spectroradiometer, a Murideo Sig-G 4K HDR signal generator and an AVPro Connect 8×8 4K HDR distribution matrix. We use Portrait Displays CalMan Ultimate software to evaluate every TV we review. In every CNET TV review, three or more similar TVs are compared side by side in various lighting conditions playing different media, including movies, TV shows and games, across a variety of test categories, from color to video processing to gaming to HDR. Our reviews also account for design, features, smart TV performance, HDMI input and gaming compatibility and other factors.

Review of LG OLED65W8 4K UHD TV
OLED65W8 is LG’s premium 4K UHD TV with a screen diagonal of 164 cm! This is a unique TV that consists of two parts (display and soundbar) and is designed exclusively for wall mounting.
What is the innovative model OLED65W8PLA
The main part of the TV is the display itself, which is only 7 mm thick, and a full-fledged soundbar that contains all the electronics! A huge OLED display with a diagonal of 65 inches, which, outside the side frames, has a thickness of 3 mm, like a painting canvas mounted on the wall. A little below it, a shelf is supposed to be mounted, on which a massive soundbar will be installed across the entire width of the screen. It not only reproduces a chic sound, but also ensures the operation of the TV – all electronic components are located in it. The display itself does not have the usual unit with all the equipment, but is equipped with a cable that connects to the soundbar. This cable can be masked, which makes the screen look like a real picture on the wall with the splash screen!
* The power cord and TV-to-AV Box cable may be visible depending on the installation method.
Screen
The new display is made using OLED technology and consists of 8 million self-illuminating organic light emitting diodes that do not require the introduction of a backlight layer. The screen, more like a canvas, can bend without being damaged!
Perfect black only available in OLED! This technology, in order to demonstrate the perfect black to the viewer, simply turns off the LEDs in the right areas of the screen!
Improve video quality and smart TV features
The unique proprietary processor called Alpha9 will reveal its full potential. It is simultaneously responsible for improving the quality of video content and for the speed of all Smart TV functions.
Alpha9 introduces the following features:
- processes the original image to improve its quality to Ultra HD format;
- stabilizes objects as they move, preventing edges from smearing and leaving a long tail;
* 2018 LG OLED TVs support HFR technology. It only applies to content played from USB media.
- enhances image clarity and clarity with a four-stage noise reduction process that eliminates grain and rainbow effects;
* “Regular processor” refers to the previous processor model used in LG TVs.
- deepens the center objects of the image and adds volume to them by adaptively adjusting the contrast.
The new era of TVs can do more than just provide Internet access, stream movies through a variety of online services, and interact with smartphones and PCs wirelessly. The Alpha9 processor is endowed with artificial intelligence, providing the advanced voice control function. It allows you to search for any content, change channels, adjust the volume and view the weather forecast after giving a voice command. Artificial intelligence recognizes the essence of what was said, regardless of the sequence in which the words were used in the sentence!
* AI TV is available in the following 10 languages and functionality may vary by country: English (USA/Australia/Canada/UK), German, Spanish (Mexico/Spain), French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Turkish, Russian, Korean. Requires LG Magic Remote, sold separately for some models. Some features may require a subscription to third-party services.
Redefining High Dynamic Range
Dolby Vision™, Advanced HDR by Technicolor, HDR10 Pro and HLG Pro are available to every viewer with the new LG OLED65W8 TV.
* HDR10 Pro and HLG Pro are LG’s dynamic frame-by-frame HDR processing solutions using advanced wide dynamic range tone mapping technology. HDR10 Pro is LG’s proprietary HDR format that adds dynamic metadata to an HDR signal. Dolby Vision is a trademark of Dolby Laboratories.
At the same time, Dolby Vision and HDR 10 Pro technologies, which are not implemented anywhere else, will reveal their full potential in the OLED65W8 model. Formats increase the contrast level of the picture, while making it visible all the objects hidden in the shadows and lights. At the same time, the transmission of special effects is improved in different ways. Dolby Vision enhances colors and enhances realism. And HDR 10 Pro creates an effect of admiration, as it embellishes the image.
Technicolor’s Advanced HDR will retain the original quality of the film even after it has been converted from studio to home viewing. After all, Technicolor performs all operations with the image on LG OLED TVs!
HLG Pro will soon make it possible to broadcast images on regular TV channels in HDR format. You just need to wait a bit, as the technology is just being introduced. And then every owner of the OLED65W8 model will get even more pleasure from the process of watching television!
Audio system
The speaker system surpasses all known limits of sound quality in conventional TV. An unrivaled 60W of power is provided by six speakers. 4 of them reproduce all frequencies, and two more are implemented to transmit extremely low frequencies. At the same time, the Dolby Atmos system will be able to recreate the sound like in a movie theater, and Dolby Digital and DTS audio decoders will ensure that every audio track is crystal clear. The LG OLED65W8 TV will provide you with a complete viewing experience. You will feel yourself in the center of events, as if in a cinema hall..
* Dolby Atmos is a registered trademark of Dolby Laboratories.
