It is believed that the most convenient place for the projector is the ceiling. To install it there, you need to choose the right and durable fasteners. The process of mounting the projector to the floor has some peculiarities.

Using the projector at home

Often, property owners first decide to purchase a home theater or use an interactive set-top box, and only then think about how to hang the projector and holder on the ceiling and which mount is better to choose. This problem will not be relevant if the equipment is intended for events and therefore it must be mobile.

If this appliance is used at home, it should immediately determine a permanent location to ensure a stable position and make the cable wiring hidden. The best solution for mounting the projection device is the ceiling, because there it will not bother anyone. This place will be inaccessible to the child, he will not be able to accidentally break the equipment by hooking the wires.

Of course, mounting the projector to the ceiling will deprive it of mobility. After that, the device cannot be removed, transferred to other rooms or taken temporarily to another place. True, if there is another set of wires, its movement becomes possible. The most correct decision can be called the decision of the owners to place a home theater in a separate room and equip it in accordance with all standards.

Projector mount

The ceiling method of placing projection equipment involves the use of a special metal, plastic or wooden structure.

It consists of certain elements:

  1. Mounting plate . It is a platform with holes through which the structure is fixed to the ceiling.
  2. Rod . This is a part that provides the desired amount of indentation of the projector from the ceiling plane. Typically, the rod is adjusted in relation to length, which allows you to adjust the height of the installation of the device.
  3. Platform . This projection mount comes in a universal design that is suitable for fixing various devices, including small screen TVs. Platforms for specific projector models are also available for sale.

There are different types of fasteners:

  • for portable or fixed projectors;
  • with fixed or adjustable stem;
  • with the possibility of placing on the ceiling, on the walls.

Some of the mounting structures allow you to change the position of the equipment in height, tilt it relative to the horizontal at different angles.

Ceiling Mount Selection

Before hanging the projector from the ceiling, a reliable mounting system is selected for it. First of all, they are guided by the parameters of the device and the surface on which it is to be installed.

These include:

  1. Equipment weight . The design must be designed for a certain load.
  2. Location of mounting points on equipment and bracket. Even in cases where the ceiling structure is universal, you need to make sure that they match.
  3. Rod length . Adjustable products still have minimum and maximum length restrictions, so you should determine in advance at what height to place the screen and measure the height of the room. Based on these data, they will find out the required length of the rod in a particular case. The projector is placed at the same height as the top edge of the interactive whiteboard or screen. To determine the length of the rod from the height of the room, subtract the height of the screen and the distance to it from the floor covering. The size of the tolerance is 5-10 centimeters.
  4. Design features of . Ceiling mounts are usually designed to mount to normal horizontal surfaces. If you plan to place the equipment in the attic or in another room with sloping sloping ceilings, you must have a special adapter. They are sold in two versions – for fixing on beams or rails.

When choosing mounting hardware for a ceiling mount projector, it’s most practical to buy all the parts separately to match the rod length and color you need, the mounting plate that best suits your application, and other items. Often, manufacturers offer consumers so-called “constructors” that allow you to assemble the mount needed in a particular case.

Fastener installation

Work on mounting brackets for the projector on the ceiling, regardless of its model, is carried out in the standard way:

  • make holes with a perforator;
  • dowels are inserted into them;
  • through the holes in the mounting panel, screw the screws.

There is nothing difficult in how to fix the projector on the ceiling, but this is provided that the floor in the house or apartment is concrete or wooden, and the owners are tired of the presence of visible wires. Contemplating them under the ceiling surface is not entirely aesthetically pleasing.

So that wires and sockets do not spoil the appearance of the ceiling and the style of the interior of the room, it is advisable to plan the installation of the projector on the eve of the repair, when it is possible to place communications behind a stretch or suspended ceiling structure or lay a strobe for cables in the concrete floor.

If the decision to purchase the projector was made after the repair was completed, you need to think carefully about how to install it.

Projector mount on concrete floor

When there is no desire or opportunity to redo the repaired surface, then you can solve the problem with mounting the projector on the ceiling by laying electrical wiring in the cable channel and laying it to the location of the outlet.

Peculiarities of fastening on the ceiling made of plasterboard

Arranging a suspended ceiling structure is ideal for hiding communications, including power and signal cables designed to connect projection equipment. Under it, you can also make a socket, but on condition that it has high-quality protection against moisture and leaks.

To attach a projector to the ceiling structure, if it is assembled, puttied and painted, you can do this:

  1. When the device weighs no more than 5 kilograms, butterfly dowels are used to fix the suspension bracket, which will open behind the plasterboard when self-tapping screws are screwed into them.
  2. When the projector is stationary and heavy, then the fastening is carried out in a metal frame, to which the drywall is mounted. A magnet is used to locate its location.
  3. Make a small hole in the finish material and attach the projection equipment to the ceiling, provided it is made of concrete. But this method needs further decoration of the hole made in the drywall sheet. For this purpose, use, for example, a decorative rosette.

Once you’ve finished installing the projector ceiling mount, you’ll still need to hide the wiring. This can be done both by laying a cable channel, and by arranging a decorative box made of plasterboard or a wooden false beam on the ceiling surface.

Mounting the projector to the Armstrong ceiling system

Ceilings of this type are distinguished by the assembly of a visible frame, consisting of cells in which decorative panels are laid. They can be removed and reinstalled, so mounting the projection device is quick and easy. You just need to remove a few products and attach the bracket and socket. A power cable is brought to it, laid in a corrugated sleeve. It is important that the fastening of the wires to the ceiling is sufficiently reliable.

Further, a hole for the rod is created in the ceiling element, the wires are brought down to connect the projector. If the surface of the walls is already finished, then to connect the cable to the mains, after being removed from the ceiling, it is removed into the cable channel.

Stretch ceiling attachment

All types of activities carried out with stretch fabrics should be carried out exclusively by specialists. If the intention to install the projector became known before the installation of the ceiling system, mortgages are attached to the ceiling, and the panel is already screwed to them. When the length of the rod allows, you can do without mortgages.

Further, a hole is created in the canvas at the location of the mortgages and strengthened with a special ring. Through it, the bar is brought out. If the tension fabric has already been installed, then in order to place the projection installation, it will need to be partially dismantled, and then returned to its original place.

Mounting the projector to the ceiling has several advantages. The device will not occupy the vital space of the room; if desired, it is made invisible with the help of decor. But the main plus is that the screen for the projector can be placed anywhere in the room.

Mounting the projector on the ceiling is easy! We show how, using the BenQ X3000i

gaming projector as an example. We have compiled detailed instructions that will help you install the projector on the ceiling yourself. For example, we will use the BenQ X3000i gaming projector, which is ideal for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

When planning a playroom, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you need to calculate the screen size. We recommend choosing the maximum screen size, because the main advantage of projectors is a large image. Second, based on the shape and size of your room, determine the best position for the projector. The surface you plan to hang the projector on must be strong enough to support its weight. If you have a suspended or stretch ceiling, the ceiling placement option will have to be excluded.

The next step is to select a screen. Any smooth plain surface can be used as a screen. If you are planning to use the projector for gaming, we recommend using a special reflective screen that guarantees excellent visual effects.

So, in this article you will learn:

Points to consider BEFORE installing the projector on the ceiling

Required measurements

Several measurements are important for proper projector and screen placement:

  1. Distance between projector and screen
  2. Screen height
  3. Distance between ceiling and top of screen
  4. Distance between floor and bottom of screen
  5. 9 0046

    Universal ceiling mount selection

There are many types of projector mounts. Some mounts are universal, and some are designed for certain models. The main requirement for the mount is that it must support the weight of your projector. Ceiling and wall mounts are not interchangeable. In this article, we will be covering the ceiling mounting of the BenQ X3000i gaming projector.

For BenQ projectors, you can use BenQ ceiling mounts (and similar). These fasteners are universal and fit a wide range of models.

Preparing to install the BenQ X3000i gaming projector: Measuring throw distance and lens shift

The projection distance and lens shift (position of the lens relative to the screen) depends on the design of the projector’s lens and its optical characteristics. Important: The distance must be measured to the projector lens, not to the mount.

Throw ratio = Throw distance (A) / Screen width

The BenQ X3000i projector has a throw ratio of 1. 15-1.50.

Lens shift is the shift of the lens parallel to the image plane (distance H in the figure). In other words, this is the part of the image that will be projected below the optical axis of the lens, expressed as a percentage.

Lens shift = (Screen height + Shift height) / Screen height

The BenQ X3000i projector has a lens shift of 110%.

Please note that the height of the ceiling mount (C1) plus the height from the bottom of the projector to the center of the lens (C2), plus the offset height (H) can equal the distance (C) from the ceiling to the top of the screen.

    Projector room preparation

The room must be measured before installing the projector. You need the following dimensions: ceiling height, width and length of the room. Make sure there are no objects between the lens and the projector screen that might interfere with projection. It is also necessary to check that there is no internal wiring in the place where the hole for the ceiling mount is drilled.

Determine screen size and location for X3000i projector

    Screen size detection

To determine the screen size, measure the height of the ceiling in your room. In addition, you will need:

    • – Distance from the bottom of the screen to the floor
    • – Minimum ceiling mount height
    • – Distance from the bottom of the projector cabinet to the center of the projector lens. This information is available in the user manual (for BenQ X3000i projector, it is 14.7 cm).
    • – The lens shift height is the distance from the center of the lens to the top of the screen. This value can also be found in the user manual or calculated using the formula above. For the BenQ X3000i projector, this is the screen height times 0.1, or the screen height plus 10%

So you get the “B” value, the maximum screen height that will be used in the screen diagonal calculation, also known as the maximum screen size (usually measured in inches)

    Decide on projector placement

In order to determine the location of the projector, it is necessary to calculate the projection distance and position of the projector relative to the ceiling. For this we need:

    1. The minimum distance from the projector to the screen is the minimum throw ratio (1.15) multiplied by the width of the screen.

The maximum projector-to-screen distance is the maximum throw ratio (1.5) times the screen width (refer to the user manual).
Throw ratio for X3000i projector is 1.15-1.50.
    2. Screen height
    3. The distance from the ceiling to the top of the screen is the sum of the heights of the ceiling mount (C1), the projector height (C2) and the lens shift height (H)
    4. The distance from the bottom of the screen to the floor is the height of the ceiling minus B and minus C.

As an example, let’s take a projector installation

    1. Use a universal ceiling mount with a minimum height adjustment of 12 cm.
    2. The height of the X3000i projector from the bottom of the projector to the center of the lens is 12.7 cm.
    3. With a lens shift of 110%, the shift height should be equal to the screen height plus 10%, or times 0. 1.
    4. The ceiling height of our room is 2.7 meters.
    5. Make sure the music center speakers do not block the screen.
    6. Based on our calculations, we determine that the maximum screen size is 150 inches (380cm) (B).
    7. To project a 150-inch (380cm) image, we need to place the X3000i at a distance (A) from the screen, which is between 3.65m and 4.87m.
    8. The distance from the top of the screen to the ceiling and from the bottom to the floor must be 30 cm.

Change your projector to X3000i without changing the screen

It’s easy to replace your old projector with the new BenQ X3000i without changing the screen. You need to compare the throw ratio of your old projector with the throw ratio of the X3000i projector. Also, compare the distance between the center point of the projector lens and the center of gravity (for BenQ X3000i, it is 7.6 cm). Based on these numbers, you can determine if the ceiling mount and screen need to be repositioned.

    Projector Ceiling Mount

Tools you will need to mount the projector to the ceiling:

    1. Drill
    2. Hammer
    3. Wrench
    4. Phillips screwdriver
    5. 90 034 Tape measure or laser level

Basic steps required to install the X3000i projector on ceiling with a BenQ Universal Ceiling Mount (or equivalent).

    1. Install the support brackets on the projector (X3000i requires three brackets).
    2. Determine where the anchor point will be using the special module. It is easiest to align the center of the mount with the center of the lens, as the center of the lens corresponds to the center of the screen.
    3. Assemble the mounting cylinders according to the ceiling height you calculated earlier.
    4. Route the cables into the cylinders, then mount the cylinders to the ceiling.
    5. Attach the X3000i to the cylinder and secure the connection with the locking mechanism.

Adjust tilt or swivel if necessary. All is ready!

When you turn on the projector for the first time, select “Ceiling Mount” in the settings and enjoy watching movies on a big screen.

Tips: The position of the projector can be changed MENU > Advanced > Installation > Projector Position > “Ceiling Mount”

A few tips for using BenQ Universal Ceiling Mounts (or similar).

    1. To move the projector horizontally and compensate for image misalignment, use the projector’s horizontal correction capability with the free-moving hinge plate and brackets.

Tip: Please note that the amount of offset must be determined before installation, as its subsequent replacement requires disassembly and reinstallation of the entire structure. Do not place the mount too far from the projector’s center of gravity, as this may cause the projector to wobble unnecessarily. For beginners, it will be easier to start with the center of the lens as a guide.

    2. The length of the mounting cylinders can be adjusted using lockable notches. The adjustment range is from 12.7 cm to 33.5 cm, which makes it possible to use the projector in various rooms. Don’t forget to pre-calculate the extension of the cylinder based on the height of the ceiling.

    3. Vertical and horizontal tilt adjustment of up to 25 degrees in each direction is used for uneven ceilings to mechanically compensate for keystone distortion of the screen. Mechanical digital keystone adjustment is more relevant for gaming projectors, as digital keystone causes latency in image output. Unlike other parameters, this parameter can be adjusted after installation.

    4. Rotate the projector 360 degrees to direct projection onto the screen.

Note: Make sure the projector is securely mounted for safety.
