Ready-made budget desktop computers are the most straightforward option for picking up an affordable PC. Whether you’re setting up an office area for working at home, building a creative space, or needing something for the whole family to share, I’ve found the best picks to fit a tighter spending limit.
Depending on your existing knowledge, most of my options have the potential for manual upgrades if you eventually want to squeeze in some extra performance for light PC gaming.
Still, for essential use, these picks from big hitters like Dell, HP, and Acer are all perfectly capable of running Windows and its most popular apps for day-to-day productivity and web browsing. Any of the best external solid-state drives can also provide extra storage if the budget options are too much of a squeeze.
The quick list
Best overall
1. Dell Inspiron 3910
The Inspiron 3910 compact model costs $500 for its entry-level specification but is customizable with more powerful hardware. You get a mouse and keyboard out of the box, but you’ll need to supply a monitor using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
Affordable alternative
2. Lenovo IdeaCentre 3i
A mouse and keyboard are in the box, ready to connect to any of the five USB ports, with three on the front panel, including one USB-C variant. Wi-Fi 6E offers rapid wireless networking, but Ethernet is still an option for LAN cables.
Best AIO
3. HP AIO 22-dd2026t
HP offers a 21.5″ panel with very similar specifications to our picks of PC towers, including a 12th Gen Intel Core processor and a high-speed SSD for storage. Dual speakers save the need to buy extra audio equipment, too.
For gamers
4. HP Pavilion Gaming
This entry-level variant from HP can handle basic games and doubles as a lightweight creative machine thanks to its dedicated NVIDIA graphics card. Includes a mouse and keyboard, so you’re ready to go straight out of the box.

My favorite Dell Inspiron config:
Intel Core i3-12100 | 8GB DDR4-3200 | 256GB NVMe SSD
I wouldn’t change a thing from Dell’s recommended setup. Besides, the price shoots up when you start tinkering with the customization, and manual upgrades are much cheaper.
Even a complete novice who never dabbled in computers has likely heard of Dell, and it’s for a good reason. They’ve made fantastic PCs for decades, and the Inspiron range has been a top choice for almost as long. The Inspiron 3910 compact model costs $500 for its entry-level specification but is customizable with more powerful hardware. Still, the price jumps up dramatically if you ask for upgraded components, but the base model can handle general computing tasks to save you from unnecessary spending.
Regardless of your internal options, you’ll always get Windows 11 included with the Inspiron 3910, with the Home edition as standard, or an upgrade to Pro for an extra $50. The choice of 12th Gen Intel Core processors includes the i3-12100 by default, which is no slouch, but you can still upgrade to an i5 or one of two i7 options that naturally increase the price. Keep the entry-level CPU paired with 8GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 3200MHz, and a 256GB NVMe solid-state drive (SSD), and the cost will stay low. Memory and storage are some of the simplest parts to upgrade yourself if you’re willing to tinker.
You get a mouse and keyboard out of the box, but you’ll need to supply a monitor using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable. For networking, the Inspiron 3910 features onboard Wi-Fi 6 support, or you can connect to the Ethernet port at the rear. High-speed USB ports include Type-C and traditional high-speed USB-A for any peripheral you need, plus onboard Bluetooth 5.2 supports wireless devices. There’s even a full-size SD card slot for transferring photos from cameras, keeping Dell in the top spot. Keep an eye out for discounted prices as low as $450.

No hardware customization.
My favorite Lenovo IdeaCentre config:
Intel Core i3-12100 | 8GB DDR4-3200 | 512GB PCIe SSD
Lenovo sticks with PCIe Gen3 for its M.2 SSD, but you get extra storage space and faster Wi-Fi networking for a slight price increase. Otherwise, it’s identical to the top pick and a fantastic alternative.
Lenovo offers a fantastic budget alternative with its IdeaCentre 300 series range of desktops, and the IdeaCentre 3i comes in a few flavors. Rather than opting for their absolute bottom end and crawling with sluggish hardware, you can step up to almost identical specs as the top pick on my list. The price jumps slightly, but so does the default storage space, so it’s fair. If nothing else, it’s a variation in color, too, with a sleek silver design.
You’ll get Windows 11 Home installed and ready to boot on the IdeaCentre 3i without an option to swap out for Pro. Still, a budget machine in this category doesn’t need it if you aren’t using enterprise apps with Bitlocker encryption. The same Intel 12th Gen Core i3-12100 processor sits alongside 8GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, and the upgrade, as mentioned earlier, to a 512GB M.2 solid-state drive for extra storage space.
A mouse and keyboard are in the box, ready to connect to any of the five USB ports, with three on the front panel, including one USB-C variant. Wi-Fi 6E offers even faster wireless networking than its predecessor, but Ethernet is still an option for LAN cables. Back to the top

My favorite HP AIO config:
Intel Core i3-1215U | 8GB DDR4-3200 | 512GB PCIe SSD
HP provides everything you need for a desktop computer right out of the box with this 21.5″ FHD panel containing all the components. Save on desk space by skipping a tower altogether.
All-in-one computers are a fantastic solution to picking up a straightforward budget desktop with minimal fuss since everything is built directly into the screen. HP offers a 21.5″ panel with very similar specifications to our picks of PC towers, including a 12th Gen Intel Core processor and a high-speed SSD for storage. Throw in an 88-degree FHD webcam with a beautiful wide-angle shutter alongside a mouse and keyboard, and there’s nothing else you’ll immediately need.
The Intel CPU is an i3-1215U, a mobile chip, which makes sense to fit into such a slim frame. It’s still capable of driving the rest of the components on offer in this HP AIO, backed up by the same 8GB DDR4-3200 RAM recommended on the other machines. You get 512GB of storage on its high-speed NVMe solid-state drive, built-in Wi-Fi 6 tech for modern wireless networking, and Bluetooth 5.2 for peripherals.
Dual speakers save the need to buy extra audio equipment, too, rounding out the attractive feature set of this sleek all-in-one built into a reasonably slim frame with a funky desk stand. Back to the top

A boxy desktop PC may seem like a relic of the past. But a desktop can be a great option for anyone who works from home or plays games, or for families who need a shared computer, because desktops typically provide better value, last longer, and are easier to repair and upgrade than laptops or all-in-ones.
Traditional desktop towers don’t come with a display, unlike all-in-one computers. In addition to buying the desktop, you need at least a monitor to go with your computer, and you might also need a keyboard, a mouse, and a webcam. Most prebuilt PCs come with bundled accessories, but you’re typically better off buying them separately.

A cheap desktop works well for browsing the web, editing documents and spreadsheets, and playing basic games like Minecraft. If you want to play popular games such as Apex Legends, Fortnite, or Valorant, you need to spend a bit more for a budget gaming desktop. And if you want to play the newest, fanciest-looking games at higher settings, resolutions, and refresh rates, you need a more expensive gaming PC. We’ll tell you what specs to look for depending on what you need.
We’re planning to test prebuilt desktop PCs in the coming months to find the best options. But many desktops—especially the cheap ones—perform similarly. Here are the specs that we recommend you pay attention to when you’re shopping.
What to look for in a desktop
A good desktop is largely defined by its specifications: the processor, how much memory it has, how much and what kind of storage it uses, and its graphics card (if it has one). Here’s what to look for.
- Processor: Choose a 12th- or 13th-generation Intel Core i3, i5, i7, or i9 processor, or any AMD Ryzen 5000- or 7000-series processor.
These CPUs have plenty of speed to handle everything from basic browsing to gaming to video editing. If you use apps such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom or play demanding games, stick with a Core i5 or i7 processor or a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processor. Avoid Celerons, Pentiums, and Athlons.
- Memory: Aim for 16 GB, especially if you’re sharing the computer or using it for gaming or apps like Photoshop or Premiere. But 8 GB is good enough for general-purpose computing, especially in a desktop under $500.
- Storage: A 256 GB solid-state drive (SSD) is a comfortable minimum, and you can get a larger drive if you need more room to store apps, media, and games. Avoid choosing a hard drive (HDD) as the desktop’s primary drive; it’s okay as a secondary drive to store photos and videos, but HDDs are too slow for everyday tasks.
- Graphics card: If you want to play games or edit video, you need a dedicated graphics card (GPU) in your computer.
It’s better to buy a desktop with a GPU rather than trying to add a graphics card later, because cheap desktops often come with cheap power supplies that don’t provide enough power for a graphics card.
For a budget gaming PC, look for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, an AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, or a Radeon RX 6650 XT. (Don’t pay extra for the RTX 3060 Ti; it’s worth purchasing only when it’s at a price similar to that of the RTX 3060.) For a midrange gaming PC, look for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 or RTX 4070. The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT and 6800 XT are good options, too, but they don’t perform as well at ray tracing and tend to cost more in prebuilt systems.
Avoid the Radeon RX 5500 XT, RX 6400, and RX 6500 XT; the GeForce GTX 1650 and GTX 1660; and Intel’s Arc GPUs. The GeForce RTX 3050 is a decent option, but it can’t do VR, and you can get the more powerful RTX 3060 for the same price.
- Size: A desktop computer’s physical size can affect what kind of work it’s good at and how upgradable it is.
These are the most common sizes:
- Mid-tower: Sometimes called “mini towers,” these PCs are actually pretty big. Mid-tower cases typically have room for multiple storage drives, a disc drive, and at least two full-height expansion cards (such as a graphics card, a video-capture card, or an internal Wi-Fi adapter). They’re also easy to upgrade.
- Small form factor (SFF) PC: Similar in height to a mid-tower but half as wide, a small form factor PC is just as upgradable but is limited to “half-height” expansion cards. Many manufacturers also make smaller, custom SFF PCs.
- Mini PC: Roughly the size of a paperback book, mini PCs are fast enough to use for most non-gaming tasks but are more expensive than other kinds of desktops. You can still upgrade many of their components, but you can’t install a graphics card or any other expansion card.
Further reading
- Wi-Fi: An Ethernet cable from your router to your PC provides the fastest and most reliable internet connection.
If your home’s layout doesn’t allow for cables, look for Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity and avoid Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n).
- Ports: The front panel should include at least two USB ports and a headphone jack. On the back panel, look for at least four USB Type-A ports, as well as two or more ports for connecting monitors (whether HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C). The computer should also have audio jacks for speakers and an Ethernet port.
The best specs for a cheap desktop PC
If you need a desktop for simple web browsing, checking email, watching videos, and editing documents and spreadsheets—with the occasional video call—look for the following specs:
If you need the cheapest usable desktop: At a minimum, look for an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of memory, and a 128 GB solid-state drive. You can find great options with these specs for around $500.
If you want a desktop that will last longer: A desktop with an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB of memory, and a 256 GB solid-state drive will feel faster—especially if you’re multitasking while on Zoom calls—and will last a few years longer. These specs typically cost a couple hundred dollars more.
The best specs for a gaming desktop
An entry-level gaming PC can handle a vast library of older and less demanding games, as well as virtual reality. (It’s also better at video editing and 3D modeling than a cheap desktop.) If you want to play the latest games on the highest settings, at higher resolutions and refresh rates, you have to spend more for a midrange gaming PC.
If you want a great budget gaming PC: Look for an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB solid-state drive, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, or AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT graphics card. Desktops with these specs typically cost around $1,000, though you can find them on sale for $800 to $900.
If you want to enjoy better-looking, more-demanding games: You’re likely to get more value by building your own midrange gaming PC than by buying a prebuilt model. Either way, in this category, look for an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor—a Core i7 or Ryzen 7 works, too—16 GB of memory, and a 1 TB solid-state drive. You can find prebuilt PCs with these specs and Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics for around $1,300, or you can step up to the newer Nvidia RTX 4070 for several hundred dollars more.
