What to Consider When Choosing the Best Microwave Convection Ovens

The best convection microwave ovens are available in various sizes and capacities; offer different levels of power; and may include feature settings, smart technology, and other options that standard microwaves and convection ovens don’t offer. Here are some of the most important factors to keep in mind while shopping for a convection microwave oven.

Size and Capacity

Choosing a microwave convection oven that’s the right size is essential. Shoppers will want to measure available kitchen counter space and look for countertop microwave ovens with exterior dimensions that fit. Those shopping for an over-the-range microwave will want to measure the available space above their kitchen ovens, keeping in mind that this appliance needs to be at least 30 inches above the cooktop surface.

A microwave’s capacity—or the overall interior dimensions—may vary among models, even those with nearly identical exterior dimensions. Typically measured in cubic feet, the interior dimensions of most convection microwaves have a capacity between 0.7 cubic feet and 2 cubic feet, though some may fall just outside this range.

A microwave’s capacity is especially important when considering a model that doubles as a convection oven. That’s because this particular appliance will be cooking or reheating larger food items than a basic microwave.

Power

A microwave convection oven’s power is measured in watts. Most microwaves have between 600 and 1,200 watts. A microwave with a higher wattage will heat foods more evenly and much faster than one that has a lower wattage.

Typically, larger and more expensive microwaves boast a higher wattage, while smaller and less expensive microwaves often have a lower wattage. A shopper looking to replace a lower-wattage microwave with a higher-wattage model should consider hiring an electrician to assess their home’s wiring and circuitry, ensuring the house can handle the additional power that’s required for the appliance to work properly.

Interior Features

Depending on the model, a microwave convection oven may include:

  • A nonstick interior coating that makes it easier to clean the microwave.
  • A stainless steel interior that doesn’t absorb odors and is also easy to clean.
  • A turntable (the rotating glass plate) that spins when the appliance is in use, ensuring that foods heat evenly.
  • Trays and removable racks that make it possible to use the microwave as an oven, offering a level cooking surface and allowing users to cook two different dishes simultaneously.
  • Automatic sensors that measure the amount of interior steam to determine when food has finished cooking. A microwave convection oven with this feature automatically stops cooking once it detects that the right amount of steam has been reached.
  • An interlock safety feature, found on all microwaves, that prevents the unit from operating if the door is open. Most microwave convection ovens have at least two interlocks.

Controls and Settings

A wide variety of controls and settings for cooking different foods is essential for a microwave convection oven. In addition to being able to adjust the temperature, shoppers will also want to look for preset options for roasting, grilling, and browning.

The next thing shoppers should consider are options to reheat foods, including shortcut keys to adjust the cooking time automatically and power level of popcorn, baked potatoes, or pizza, for example. Defrost, power reduction, and quick-start/add-a-minute buttons are also good to have. Many microwave convection ovens offer a speed-cook setting, too. This setting integrates some of the best aspects of convection cooking with the speed of microwaving to deliver evenly heated foods in a short amount of time.

Aesthetic

The aesthetic of a microwave convection oven will impact how it looks in a kitchen or other space. Like other appliances, microwave convection ovens are available in a wide range of finish options, including stainless steel, black stainless, black, and white.

In addition to the finish, shoppers looking to buy a convection microwave oven should also consider the overall design of the model they’re interested in. Examining the layout of the buttons, the position and integration of the handle, and whether the style of the microwave will make it a good fit for the kitchen space where it’ll be placed are a few things that need to be taken into account before buying.

Energy Efficiency

As with choosing any appliance, shoppers will want to think about the energy efficiency of a microwave convection oven. Energy-efficient microwaves can offer a variety of benefits, such as lowering monthly electric bills and minimizing a household’s environmental footprint.

While many kitchen appliances boast Energy Star certifications, there are currently no Energy Star-certified microwave convection ovens. However, shoppers can still find models that will reduce the total amount of energy they consume. Those who are energy conscious should choose a microwave that offers variable power settings, as it will prevent the use of more power than is required for each task.

Smart Technology

Finally, shoppers will want to determine whether they want their microwave convection oven to have smart-technology capabilities. Smart microwave convection ovens are WiFi-enabled and allow users to control them using an app or voice commands. Many smart microwaves or apps even offer the option to scan a barcode on a prepackaged item and will then automatically adjust the time and power settings to cook that food item.

Another benefit of some smart microwave convection ovens is the ability to monitor cooking progress from another room. The app paired with many models provides an option to check in on food to know if it’s ready to serve. Smart technology also allows users to place food in the microwave and set the cooking time with a smart-home assistant or the app, programming the appliance to start within minutes or hours later.

FAQs

Many shoppers have specific questions about microwave convection ovens ahead of making a purchase. Some want to know what kinds of food they can cook in these ovens, while others often ask about cleaning and maintenance. Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about selecting the best microwave convection ovens.

Q. What is a convection microwave oven used for?

This appliance is used to cook and reheat food the way a traditional microwave does, but has a convection mode that can roast, bake, and cook larger meals, too.

Q. Can you put metal in a convection microwave oven?

Yes, with the convection-mode settings, it’s safe to use metal in the oven. Don’t use metal with the standard microwave features, though.

Q. How do I maintain my microwave convection oven?

Remove spills or stuck-on foods immediately. If it’s hardened or cooked onto the surface, place a bowl of hot water inside so the steam loosens it. Then wipe and clean.

Q. How long will a microwave convection oven last?

Most microwave convection ovens last between 7 and 10 years. How often it’s used and how well it’s cared for typically affect its lifespan.

Principle of operation and types of microwave ovens with convection

A microwave oven with a convention is an oven in which heat transfer is additionally transferred by an air flow forced by an internal fan and a heating element (TEH). This function expands the capabilities of household appliances – dishes warm up more evenly, but convection dries out food, that is, the liquid evaporates faster.

Compared to conventional models, convection ovens are large. In addition, they consume a lot of electrical energy, but the dishes are cooked faster.

The crust on pastries and casseroles is soft and well baked.

All you have to do is place the food in the special container, switch on the appropriate program and set the cooking time. Heating power, sequence and combination of modes change even during cooking.

Two types of ovens are available to the consumer:

  • Recessed. The model is integrated inside the kitchen cabinet. This saves free space.
  • Stand-alone (freestanding). The model is installed on the kitchen table and takes up a lot of free space.

The more functions a microwave has, the more expensive the appliance. In expensive models, food is cooked in the following mode: double boilers, automatic cooking, food memorization mode.

Models available that combine 6 cooking methods:

  • convection with grill;
  • microwave with grill;
  • steam microwaves;
  • microwaves;
  • grill.

Control

3 types of microwave oven control:
Touch – film contact pad, with active use the panel is short-lived, quickly fails. The functionality of models with touch panels is richer than other types of microwave ovens.

Push-button – mechanical micro-buttons are durable, each button has its own program: selection of food weight and cooking time, defrosting. The oven memory stores 2-3 recipes.

Mechanical – the simplest but most reliable way to control – models with a minimum set of functions. In order to start the device, you need to turn 2 knobs. 1 knob for setting the cooking time, and the second one sets the power.

Functions

Microwave oven with convection replaces the oven, if you only have a stove without an oven, then this model will become your magic wand.

2 basic microwave oven functions:

  • grill
  • microwaves

The appliance is equipped with two types of heating elements: quartz and metal heater. A heating element is a tube, inside there is a high-resistance wire (nichrome) twisted into a spiral – a heating element. As a standard, the heater is installed at the top, in ovens with convection it is installed in front of the fan. In some models it is mobile – this applies to metal, quartz heating elements are always static.

Quartz grill is a heat-resistant quartz tube and tightly coiled wire inserted into it.

It is fixed above the working chamber. This grill is easy to use, as it takes up a minimum of space, warms up in 2-3 minutes.

Pros and cons of a convection microwave oven

Advantages:

  • Ability to use and combine different modes.
  • Fast cooking.
  • Save time.
  • Preservation of the maximum amount of nutrients.
  • Versatility.
  • Automatic control.

Disadvantages:

  • The need to purchase special dishes.
  • Small amount of cooked food.
  • Large consumption of electrical energy.

Microwave myths

Microwaves change the molecular structure of foods.
Microwaves are not radiation or ion emitters, so they do not harm the human body. The main function is to heat the dish due to the friction of the molecules.

Microwaved food contains many carcinogens.
Carcinogenic substances are formed when heat and oil are combined. This happens when cooking in a skillet or oven. Cooking in the microwave is similar to cooking in a double boiler, so they will not bring any harm to the human body.

It is dangerous to be near a microwave oven.
The microwave oven is equipped with a metal shielding housing, even the glass on the door is equipped with a shielding grid, which prevents the spread of microwaves outside the cooking chamber.

Operation

Cook food in the dishes intended for this purpose. It must be made of heat-resistant glass or plastic.
For even cooking, cook food in small batches.

Use the rack when grilling food. It is a lattice on short legs. The grate allows hot air to flow around the dish. Due to this, the air masses will evenly affect the products.

For a golden brown crust, use the combination mode, which alternates between convection and grilling. This cooking option will allow you to cook food in 15-20 minutes.

Before baking, preheat the cooking compartment – only with a grill, do not heat the empty cooking compartment of the microwave oven with microwaves.

Food must be placed 2 cm from the walls to avoid sparks.

Do not microwave: crystal glassware, gold-plated dishes, low heat resistance dishes, simple kitchen utensils made of steel and aluminum.

Do not heat vegetable oils and fats, foods like eggs and hermetically sealed dishes in the microwave – pressure will build up inside, which will lead to an explosion.

During heating, the food must be open, or air must enter – in special dishes for microwave ovens, holes are provided for this.

Do not use metal clips to secure plastic bags.

Malfunctions

The main components of the microwave oven requiring attention:

  • Door with gasket;
  • Magnetron
  • Fan;
  • High Voltage Capacitor;
  • Power Cord;
  • Rectifier;
  • High Voltage Fuse;
  • Transformer

Secondary Elements:

  • Pallet Motor;
  • Backlight Lamps;
  • Grill Lamps;
  • Fan Motor

HV fuse blown. Remove the protective cover from the oven, unscrew the screws on the back (the location of the screws depends on the model). The high-voltage fuse is a glass canister, inside of which there is a spring and a thin fusible wire. The integrity of the fuse is determined visually. To do this, disassemble the insulating sleeve (the fuse is enclosed in a plastic case). If this fails, then disconnect the sleeve from the circuit, connect it in series with the lamp and the battery. If the fuse is good, the light will turn on.

Failure of the high voltage capacitor. Disconnect the capacitor element from the circuit, connect it in series with the incandescent lamp and plug the circuit into an outlet. If the capacitor is working properly, then the light bulb burns at half its power. If the bulb does not light or burns too brightly, then the capacitor must be replaced.

Diode test and replacement. Disconnect the diode from the circuit, attach it to the light bulb. During operation, it flashes. A bright light indicates a diode failure. When replacing a diode, make sure that it is in the circuit in the same way as the previous one.

Microwave does not turn on. The cause of the malfunction is a blown fuse (the mains fuse is blown, or the thermal fuse is located under the insulation of the transformer located on the control board). Replacing the thermal fuse at home is difficult, but you can get by with a jumper between the two legs of the primary winding transformer (there are 3 legs on the winding) – as a rule, one leg is not connected to the circuit. Before replacing the mains fuse, check for proper operation, and then replace as indicated above.

The convection microwave oven is a household appliance that allows you to quickly and effortlessly prepare delicious, appetizing meals.

What is convection in microwave ovens: everything you need to know

In this article we will talk about what convection in microwave ovens is, why it is needed and what are its advantages. Can convection expand the functionality of the microwave or is it just a marketing ploy? Reading time – 5 minutes.

TO STORE

Is convection necessary in microwave ovens?

For many housewives, the microwave is still a handy tool for heating food or express defrosting food from the freezer. Indeed, classic microwave ovens (the so-called “solo”), which work only using microwaves, are simply not designed for many functions.

Microwave oven Toshiba MW2-AC25TF BUY

Specification Features
Power 900 W
Volume 25 l
Optional 5 power levels, bio-ceramic interior, pushbutton control, can cook without turntable, grill power 1150 W, convection power 2100 W

If you have ever cooked any dish in a conventional microwave oven, then you already know how thankless it is. The chances of success are low (the result is usually different than expected), and wiping the inside of the device in the event of a fiasco – the consequences of culinary experiments – takes a lot of time and effort.

Thus, the classic microwave oven is just a large monofunctional cabinet for heating. Is it rational? – Not at all. And for small kitchens, in which there is simply nowhere to place a sufficient number of household helpers, it is completely wasteful.

To expand the functionality of microwave ovens and make them more attractive to housewives, manufacturers have equipped microwave ovens with new chips – a grill and convection. With their help, the range of possibilities of the microwave oven has increased many times over, and cooking in it has become much easier.

With a grill, everything is about clear – in fact, it is a heating element or quartz heating element, which is usually located in the upper part of the microwave oven and provides the prepared dishes with an appetizing crispy crust.

What is convection? In fact, this is a heat fan, which is most often located on the back wall of the microwave oven. The function of forcing and circulating hot air inside the microwave is assigned to the shoulders of convection, without which it is extremely difficult to achieve uniform baking of various dishes.

Microwave oven LG MJ3965AIS BUY

Specifications Features
Power 1100 W
Volume 39 l
Optional 5 power levels, Easy Clean interior (antibacterial), grill power 950W, convection power 1850W

Advantages of the convection mode

We remember from the school physics course that hot air is lighter than cold air and, as a result, tends to concentrate in the upper part of a given space. Therefore, without special tricks, it is not possible to achieve a uniform temperature over the entire area of this space.

This effect is well observed in ovens and in the same microwaves, when one part of the dish may already burn (in ovens, the bottom usually “burns”, and in the microwave – the top), and the second part can be treacherously raw. In this case, convection comes to our aid by forcibly distributing hot air flows.

The list of dishes that the microwave oven with convection function perfectly copes with is quite wide. You can cook literally everything in it: from baked meat, fish and vegetables, to soups, side dishes and fragrant homemade pastries. By the way, baking is no worse than in a conventional oven, and for most housewives this is important.

Microwave oven Samsung MC28H5013AK/UA BUY

Specification Features
Power 900 W
Volume 28 l
Optional Bio-ceramic interior, turntable rotation off, grill power 1400W, 85 cooking programs

Another important plus is the cooking speed. Compared to classic cooking (on the hob or in the oven), dishes in the microwave cook almost 2 times faster. Agree, today this is very important – and resources are distributed more rationally, and less time is spent on cooking.

In addition, the small (relative to the same oven) volume of the microwave oven allows you to cook food in small portions. If you are not waiting for guests and you just need to cook dinner for the family, then using a microwave oven with convection for this is much more convenient, faster and more economical.

Most modern microwave ovens with a convector are equipped with a grill by default, and also have many pre-installed cooking programs. This is convenient so that each time you do not bother with setting the time and temperature. All you have to do is prepare the food, place it in the microwave in a suitable dish and press the appropriate button. Everything else the device will do on its own, without “standing over the soul.”

How to use the convection mode

There are a few things you need to know about convection to get the best results. And here are the most important ones:

  1. To ensure the same cooking on all sides and create the so-called three-dimensional effect, use the special rack with legs in the form of a lattice. Usually they are equipped with microwave ovens with convection. This will allow the goodies to cook faster and more evenly.
  2. Be sure to use heat-resistant cookware – glass, ceramic, earthenware or silicone. The convection mode in the microwave “accelerates” to 200⁰С, so it is impossible to put food, out of habit, in heat-resistant plastic.
  3. For a crispy golden crust, use the combined mode with the grill. By the way, the combination of grill and convection allows you to reduce the cooking time by about 15-20 minutes.
  4. If you are making a pie or cake, then it is better to bake the cakes one at a time, and not the whole dough. This applies to any dishes that can be cooked in portions – the smaller the volume of food, the faster and more evenly they will bake.

Can a convection microwave replace an oven?

Many housewives are wondering if a microwave with a convector can completely replace an oven? Replace, most likely, will not replace, but it will definitely offer a worthy alternative. Especially if your kitchen is small and there is simply no way to place a spacious oven in it.

It may be assumed that the small useful volume of the microwave oven is a minus, but in fact this judgment is very individual. For small families, this is rather a plus – it is optimal to cook food in small portions in it, energy consumption is more reasonable, and besides, the device takes up less space.
