How to choose the best MacBook Air case

Choosing the best MacBook Air case for your device is a big decision and you have to take lots into consideration. One of the main choices is choosing between a soft case (a sleeve) or a hard case (a skin). In general we tend to recommend hard cases over the softer cases because they offer more protection for your device. Hard cases clip onto your laptop and stay on there; meaning you protect it from any unwarranted bumps, drops and spills at all times where as a sleeve needs to be removed in order you use your device. But by owning both, you can double your protection and make sure you reduce the risk of an expensive damages!

Another important element to consider is compatibility. If you opt for a hard case you need to make sure it’s the exact right size for your laptop model. Our above guide lists cases specifically suited for the 13-inch MacBook Air line released from 2018 onwards. Each listing specifies exact model numbers and sizings, but it’s always worth double checking before you buy. Whilst you have to be exact with hard case sizes, you have more flexibility when it comes to the soft sleeves so the fit doesn’t need to be as precise.

The final and most important choices come down to your personal taste in design and budget. Nomad Luxury Leather Case for MacBook Pro is as good as it gets

Nomad has just released Apple’s highly anticipated MacBook Pro Case which is gorgeous in its design and adds a lot of functionality and protection. We’ve been using it for the last week and it’s quickly become our choice for protecting Apple portable Macs.

This device appeared a long time ago and in many ways seemed inevitable. Nomad’s signature leather cases first covered our iPhones before expanding to our larger iPads. The Mac is by far the most ambitious and requires far more raw materials than anything Nomad has done before.

Nomad seems to have taken everything it’s learned from other leather products to apply to the exceptional MacBook Pro case. Available for both 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, we chose one to try out our new 13-inch MacBook Pro M1.

Sleeves in general, or even more specific leather sleeves, are not new to the Mac. There are many worthy options to consider. Apple makes its own thinner, minimalist Mac cases, and we also reviewed the Clayton and Crume cases, which we really liked. Not to mention the popular Picaso Labs sleeves.

But what we see over and over again is the same design, just with a different skin on the outside. Nomad didn’t fall into this rut ​​of lack of innovation.

The Nomad sleeve features a layered design that starts with durable gorgeous Horween leather on the outside. This Chicago leather is used in all Nomad leather products and we know how incredible it gets with age. As you use the case, it develops a patina that is unique to you and makes it even better than when you picked it up.

The stiffening of the sleeve is what Nomad calls a “high density EVA shell”, which stands for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate—in other words, a rubber-like polymer. This shell provides a strong structure for a Mac Hollow Pocket sleeve rather than just a flat sleeve.

What’s more, it adds extra drop protection compared to sleeves that only use thick leather.

MacBook Pro in Nomad case

The inside of the Nomad is lined with microfiber instead of the standard wool felt. The benefit here is that it’s still exceptionally soft, while being slightly thinner. Nomad needed to lighten the layers because the inner shell adds a bit of volume that it wouldn’t have otherwise.

A ring with reinforced stitching around the edge holds the body together. There are additional reinforcements in the opening where the Mac slides in and out. Feeling those edges, it’s durable, and we’re hoping the EVA shell adds drop protection rather than just transferring any impact to the Mac itself.

A small square groove in the center of the grommet opening makes it easier to open the grommet than a tight-fitting sleeve. The opening of the sleeve is covered with magnets, which is nice. Other sleeves leave that entire side of your Mac exposed, but Nomad covers it up for added protection and security.

Daily use of the Nomad MacBook Pro case

We’ve been carrying around our Mac in the Nomad leather case for several days now. We usually ditch any shell or case and put the Mac in a Peak Design Everyday Back or Everyday Messenger bag. They, like many other bags, have a laptop-only pocket and have a matching padded lining for storage protection.

When we are not swinging the bag, we are putting the Mac in the sleeve, such as those mentioned above. Most often, we choose the Clayton and Krum model.

Nomad’s Horween Leather Case for MacBook Pro

Design and protection aside, the Nomad continues to stand out in a few key ways. Our favorite touch is the always-on access to USB-C ports on the Mac itself.

When our MacBook Pro is in the Nomad leather case, there is a cutout on one side where we can connect the power cable to charge the battery. This side opening is not held together with magnets, but instead uses the rigidity of the case to stay closed when not in use, but opens up enough for a cable when needed. It’s a nice touch and we’d like to see others adopt it.

You might be able to use your MacBook Pro in clamshell mode when it’s also in a shell, since you have access to those ports, but we wouldn’t recommend it. It would be completely closed and there would be no airflow. If you want to use your Mac in clamshell mode with an external display in a case, we recommend the Picaso Lab Leather Case, which is designed to do just that.

If we’re trying to point to one of these, our only criticism is that because it has an inner shell, you can’t use your sleeve as a lining while you work. It may sound silly, but we usually take the case off and place it on a table, table, or lap and place the Mac right on top. The sleeve is hollow and not as hard so it doesn’t work in this case so we have to place the sleeve somewhere else while we work.

Should I buy the Nomad MacBook Pro leather case?

There’s no other way to put it: we love the Nomad leather sleeve. This is by far, without a doubt, the best case or cover we’ve ever tested for a MacBook Pro.

The leather is as good as it gets and the shell adds more protection and makes it easier to use. Magnets hold the Mac securely inside, and the Mac is easy to slide in and out, not to mention accessing the USB-C port when closed. The attention to detail is incredible and we’d rather use that than Apple at any given moment.

Many users may object to this high price, which is understandable. Although it is expensive, we believe the product is worth it. Once you use the sleeve, you will understand why the price is so high.
