Key backlighting on some laptops is quite a useful option, but not everyone knows how it turns on.

Most users choose exactly those laptop models that have a backlit key function. This is very handy in low light conditions so that you don’t have to type by touch or use the display backlight.

In this article, we will consider the main points of the key backlight mode.

How can I detect if the keys are backlit on my device?

Some experts recommend looking at the row of keys F1 to F12, and if there are icons indicating illumination, there is a backlight mode on the laptop. But in practice this is not always the case. On many models there are several buttons that characterize the light parameter. Manufacturers can allocate backlight indicator keys in different ways. And sometimes users confuse the icons for changing the screen brightness with turning on the keyboard backlight.

Therefore, a guaranteed method must be used. Namely, take the packaging from the device, instructions or documents attached to it and see the laptop model. Then just type in the name in the search bar and read the technical specifications. Usually, information about its availability is indicated opposite the “keyboard backlight” section. The most important thing is to accurately write exactly your model and compare it with the results that the search engine gave out.

Another way is to study the “Windows Mobility Center” section. To do this, select “Control Panel” from the “Start” menu. On the right in the search bar, enter “mobility center” and click Enter. When issuing options, click “Windows Mobility Center” and open the section. If you see the item “Keyboard backlight brightness”, then this means that the option is available on your device.

Enable mode on different laptop models

To enable the key backlight feature on Asus devices, you first need to make sure of the following:

whether the option is enabled in Bios;
Whether the drivers have been updated to the latest version.

All this must be done.

If the light indicator is in active mode, then the key diodes will be automatically turned on, taking into account the level of lighting in the room. To adjust this manually, you can use the key combination: Fn + F4 – increase; Fn+F3 – downgrade.

You can activate the backlight option on Lenovo laptops using the Fn + Spacebar combination. If you press them at the same time, the average brightness will turn on. If you press twice, the illumination will increase. The next press will turn off the diodes.

The highlight icon on the HP Pavilion is usually located on the left side of the space bar. Depending on the laptop model, the LEDs can be turned on using the following methods:

Start the device and press F5 (F12).
At the bottom of the keyboard is the Fn key and the Spacebar. Pressing them together activates the backlight function.
If the model supports the keyboard lighting mode, then the key to turn it on is usually indicated by three dots. When pressed, the backlight is activated.

In case the above methods did not work, fully check the entire row of keys F1-F12. The required option for activation may be located elsewhere. If it doesn’t work, go to Bios settings. In them you need to select the “Setup” item and go to the “System Settings” section. If the option is disabled, you must activate “Keys Mode”.

When the backlight turns off too quickly, literally after a couple of seconds, then a timer setting in Bios is required. For this you need:

Reboot the device and press F10, which will bring up the Bios menu.
Select the “Additional” section.
Go to “Device Options” Firmware Options and press Enter.
Select “Backlight timer” in the parameters.
Click the Space key to open the settings and set the required time delay.

Note that there may not be such settings in Bios. In this case, this option is most likely not installed in the device. To make sure of this – look at the full description of the model on the manufacturer’s website.
