10 Best Laptops with Backlit Keyboards 2023 (From $300 )
The best laptops with backlit keyboards are most of the time going to be ultrabooks or premium laptops such as the ASUS VivoBook or the MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Pro has one of the best backlit keyboards found on laptops.
They have a few extra features such as:
- Being able to adjust how much light (thus battery) is used to backlit the keys.
- A sensor that can turn on the backlit as soon as you touch one key after being afk for a few minutes.
I think the first feature is the one you should be after especially if you also want a portable laptop that you can take everywhere as this will save you A LOT of battery. Some extra features include:
- RGB keyboards (the backlit looks cool and has each section of the keys with a different color).
- A silent keyboard: that is a keyboard you can pound hard on yet staying silent.
- Bonus: have a the page down button away from the numpad.
If you’re a writer or a programmer it’s really annoying having to hit the page down accidentally only to end up at the last line of document.
Tactile Feedback: Super important
If you’re after a backlit keyboard, I’m assuming , whether you’re a programmer or a writer, you’re a hardcore typer . Thus it is important you make sure you get a keyboard with superb tactile feed back as this not only will speed up your typing speed but also make it more enjoyable to type.
Tactile feedback is a fancy way to describe very responsive, bouncy keyboards (usually thin), which easily register characters as you type them with a minimal amount of pressure.
Table of Contents
All laptops in this list have keyboards with great tactile feedback and obviously a backlit keyboard. However, not all of them will have the most important extra feature (adjusting brightness levels) or be 100% silent, this is usually reserved to ultrabooks.
Each review will specifically mention what kind of backlit features a laptop has and some keyboard characteristics like travel distance and silent keys
Some of them may have high traveling distance which may mean you will have to apply a moderate amount of pressure for keys to register and some may have very low traveling distance where you only have to apply a minimal amount of pressure.
You may ask? Why include laptops with high traveling distance?
Well I’m trying to include a backlit keyboard with a keyboard that every type of user (gamers, writers, programmers, etc) finds more convenient.
If you’re writer you’re probably asking yourself: What is this guy talking about? Well believe it or not, some writers and gamers actually enjoy a keyboard that resembles a typewriter. Something they can pound hard on. But Like I said only a few laptops on this list will have those characteristics.
If you don’t know much about computer keyboard jargon, head to the last section before reading these descriptions and reviews
1. ASUS VivoBook 15 Slim

Just so we are clear, this laptop is not the cheapest on the list. It sells for ~650 dollars. The cheapest laptop with a backlit keyboard would be the Acer Aspire 5 with the Ryzen 3 3200U CPU.
But that processor is 3 years old and I can’t just feature it here in the 2023 update of this post.
However, old or not, it’s not slow by any means so if you only have a budget around 350, you are welcomed to grab it is still fast!
ASUS VivoBook 15 Slim:
The ASUS VivoBook featured here has the latest of the latest CPU: 12th generation Core i5 which is the fastest ‘budget’ CPU as of 2023. It’s not just that it has a bunch of other features:
- Bigger display
- Thin & Lightweight design
- Free Adobe Creative Cloud subscription
- x2 Storage
- Windows 11 Pro out of the Box
- Fingerprint reader
- Latest WiFi Protocol: WiFi 6
Keyboard
You can get more details by clicking on the links above which will take you to reviews and descriptions, what we are conrned about here are the keyboards:
Travel distance: 1. 4 mm – medium travel distance. Check the laptop review here (same model , different hardware)
Type: Full sized island type keyboard; Includes NumPad.
Backlit: Can be turned on and off with F7 as shown below:
It does not have a sensor that can adjust brightness according to how much illumination there is in the room but it will turn off the backlit keyboard if you stop typing and activate it back on as soon as you hit any of the keys.
2. M2 MacBook Air

Virtually every macbook air ever released (maybe with the exception of the 2018-2020 models) will have much much better keyboards than 99% of all windows laptops. It is hard to believe I know but like I explain in the last section , how good a keyboard is depends on the overall design of the laptop and this is what macbooks excel at (hence why they are expensive).
Even the 2009-2017 models have still better keyboards than most windows laptops and that’s the original keyboard design himself Steeve Jobs introduced. So if the latest models are out of your budget, there’s no reason to discard the older models. Even the 200 dollar MacBook Airs will have awesome backlit keyboards and they will not be slow by any means (OSX runs fast on any hardware):
KeyBoard
Travel distance: 0.7 mm.
Type: chiclet type keyboard, no numpad. Has FN keys (only touchbar models lack FN keys).
Backlit: brightness levels can be adjusted either manually as shown here or through the light sensor.
Light sensors will basically adjust brightness levels automatically based on how much light there is in the environment.
It will turn off after a period of inactivity automatically as well.
3. ASUS Chromebook Flip C434

ChromeBooks can cost on average anywhere from 150 to 250 bucks and despite that a lot of them have a backlit keyboard. Outside of older MacBook Air models, they are the cheapest laptops you can get with a backlit keyboard.
Why? Same thing with older MacBook Airs. They do not need fancy hardware to run fast thus the manufacturer has enough budget to fit in an awesome keyboard. The lack of need for high-end hardware is because they do not run Windows Home, they run Chrome OS which can run on 2GB RAM and much weaker mobile CPUs this also accounts for their extremely good batteries (most have 10 hours on average!).
Keyboard
Because ChromeBooks do not need to fit in a lot of hardware, there’s plenty of space to easily design a responsive keyboard. This is why most chromebooks also have high travel distances.
The only problem with the keyboards is the paint used for the characters, it doesn’t contrast well with key’s colors. It can look almost invisible if you don’t activate the backlit feature. Again I’m posting it here because it is the cheapest chromebook that has both a backlit keyboard and great tactile feedback.
Travel distance: 1.5mm
Type: Chiclet keyboard; FN keys available but no numpad.
Backlit: No sensor. No brightness levels.
4. ASUS ZenBook 14 OLED

The ASUS ZenBooks are also ultrabooks but they’re much much cheaper than the latest MacBooks. In fact, they are the cheapest windows ultrabooks.
Despite that the 13” ASUS ZenBook is both thinner and lighter than the latest MacBook Air.
However, although the keyboard looks the same as the MacBook Air on the outside and it’s actually quite good for a Windows laptop, it isn’t really as good as the MacBook’s keyboard. Nonetheless, it’s the best you could get it for 700 bucks.
KeyBoard
Travel distance: 1.6mm
Type: clichet type keyboard. Virtual numpad located on top of the trackpad.
Backlit: Brightness levels available. Backlit sensor.
5. Lenovo Ideapad 3i

This is the best bang for your buck budget laptop with a backlit keyboard. It has a FHD, the latest 12th gen CPU, 512GB of storage and 8GB RAM out of the box AND a backlit keyboard all under 450 dollars!
KeyBoard
Travel distance: 2mm
Type: Island type keyoard, physical numpad
Backlit: Backlit Keyboard can be activated by pressing FN+Spacebar, two levels of brightness.
Responsive keyboard mostly due to the high travel distance.
6.HP Laptop 17

Another budget laptop with modern hardware just like the ASUS VivoBook and the Lenovo Idepad 3. However, it lacks the upgrades of the Lenovo and the resolution of the ASUS. Regardless it’s still faster than the ASUS VivoBook 14 and it’s got a much bigger display (17”).
What’s really cool is that unlike other 17” laptops it’s got a FHD (1080p) resolution screen which on top of the 17” display will add a huge amount of extra space.
KeyBoard
Travel distance: 1.7 mm
Type: Cliche Type KeyBoard.
Backlit: No sensor. Numerical keypad available. Three steps for brightness levels: OFF, ON, DIM.
7. Surface Pro 9
Backlit keyboard 2 in 1 Laptop
Intel Evo i7 12th gen

Convertible laptops that are premium ultrabooks will all have a backlit keyboard. Some examples besides the Surface Pro are the Lenovo Yoga, HP Envy & Dell Inspiron.
The Surface Pro however is the one with all the extra features you could ask for a backlit keyboard. If you find it the newest model too expensive, you can go for older models which will also have the same backlit keyboard (perhaps without the sensor if you go back 4 generations).
KeyBoard
The keyboard is not built-in you have to buy it separately and it has to magnetically attach to the bottom hinge. Once you do, if you use the Surface Pro 9 on a hard surface, it will feel like a laptop. If you however use it on your lap, it will feel somewhat flimsy although the newer models have improved the sturdyness to offset this issue.
Travel distance: 1.05-1.8mm
Type: clichet type keyboard, no numpad. Dedicated FN keys available.
Backlit: backlit sensor.
8. Lenovo ThinkPad E15

The thinkpads are known for three things: their sturdy rock solid design which makes them last for years and years. Their awesome trackpads and their top of the line keyboards which may be the best keyboards on windows laptops.
Note that not all the thinkpads have a backlit feature so you have to double check.
Keyboard
An unique feature of the ThinkPads is how much space there is around each key, they are about as far apart as the keys on the 16” MacBook Pro. Although they have somewhat high travel distances, they are responsive and very very easy to type too.
Travel distance: 2.3mm
Type: Island KeyBoard. Full Sized Numpad.
Backlit: Two brightness levels. No Sensor.
9. Dell XPS 15 9520
Best Dell Laptop with BackLit KeyBoard
Core i9-12900HK
32GB RAM DDR5
3050Ti RTX NVIDIA 4GB vRAM
1TB PCIe NVMe SSD
15” full HD IPS 1080p

The Dell XPS series are also premium ultrabooks thus a lot of effort is placed on the overall design and this is why the keyboard is one of the bests too: thin, responsive with great tactile feedback.
I’ve tried a couple in the past and I’d say they resemble the same thrill of the 16” MacBook Pros (we can’t compare it to the 13” or 11” MacBook Air as the keys are a little too cramped). Now the model I’m showing you here is the most expensive one because it’s the 17” version. If it’s out of your budget, you can go for the older models, you’d still get the same high quality keyboard.
What’s important is that you get a 15” o 17” laptop as this frees up tons of space for the numerical keypad and gives you enough space to rest your palms.
KeyBoard
Travel distance: 1.2 mm
Type: island type keyboard includes full sized numerical keypad and all fn keys.
Backlit: Sensor (latest models). Brightness levels (Latest models).
10. MSI Pulse GL66
Best Gaming Laptop With Backlit Keyboard
Intel Core i7-12700H
16GB DDR4 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB vRAM
512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
15” IPS full HD 144Hz
8. 68lbs

This is not the most budget friend gaming laptop but it is the one with the best bang for your buck: 3070RTX GPUs on laptops sell for 500 dollars more and this one even has a 12th generation Core i7 CPU which was just released a few months ago. It also includes an RBG keyboard .
It is not as thin as some gaming laptops but that means there is a high travel distance due to the laptop thickness. As a gamer, you know how useful it is to have a keyboard that you can pound hard on with no damage right?
If you want to check other laptops with RGB keyboards, click on this link but you’ll find yourself coming back to this model.
KeyBoard
Travel distance: 2 mm
Type: Full sized Island Type KeyBoard. Numerical pad. FN keys.
Backlit: RGB backlit keyboard. You can program several patterns for the illumination and toggle which keys to illuminate with a certain color (useful for differentiating quick actions and macros). Also has the W A S D keyboards (for movements) highlighted. No sensor, no fingerprint reader.
If you have a low budget or you are investing quite a lot of money on a laptop, then you better learn the basics of keyboard features on laptops if you want to get the best bang for your buck and if you want to maximize productivity.
Extra Features
Backlit Brightness
Adjustable brightness levels can be save up tons of battery and if you’re a student, you probably want this as midterms and finals can get the library pretty crowded with little to no outlets for charging.
The easiest way to tell whether a laptop has this feature is to check the top row of the keyboard at or near where the FN keys are located as shown in the picture above. Be sure not to confuse screen brightness (left side) with these buttons (high-lighted in read).
Unfortunately, this is usually found on laptops above 700 dollars and only a few laptops under 1000 dollars have it. You’ll find them mostly on premium devices like UltraBooks, convertible laptops, gaming laptops, etc.
Ex: MacBooks, Dell XPS, Surface Book, ASUS ZenBook & ASUS Rog.
Sensor
The first three laptops I just mentioned can be called ‘ultrabooks’, they’re basically super thin and pack as much fancy features as possible, this includes a sensor which will automatically adjust the backlit brightness level based on the surrounding’s light conditions. If it’s somewhat dark, then the levels will be high. If it’s very bright, there will no backlit.
You can disable this feature if you want.
Programmable Lightining
Gaming laptops have this feature where you can program which light color you want a key to be backlit with as shown below:
How is this even useful? Well it’s usually for aesthetic purposes. But if you can also use it to highlight the keys you use for certain abilities and actions. For example, you want to separate the W S A D keys which are used for moving around a character from the keys around them which can be used to toggle quick actions and macros.
Not all gaming laptops have this feature though. Only the most expensive ones, on average you’ll find them on 1300 dollar gaming laptops and above. They’re also ONLY found on the big gaming laptop brands: MSI, ASUS, Alienware, etc. Very rarely , if ever, on Acer and Lenovos.
KeyBoard Quality
Not all backlit keyboards are perfectly designed, there are usually a few problems with some models. It’s not a manufacturing process error, it’s actualy done on purpose as to save money on the cost of the overall design. The most common one is backlit bleeding:
Backlit Bleeding
A well designed backlit keyboard should reduce as much as possible the amount of backlit going around each key. In other words, the light should be limited to the characters only.
Unfortunately, the more you minimize the light around it, the more difficult it is to design the keyboard. It’s usually caused by the keys being placed a bit too high with respective to the base holding the keyboard.
Because there’s always going to be a space between the surface below the key and the key, virtually every laptop will have some degree of backlit bleeding. Only the most expensive ones (laptops with thin backlit keyboards) will minimize the problem as much as possible.
Key Travel
This refers to how much distance a key needs to travel down for the computer to register. Whether a keyboard has a high or low travel doesn’t have much to do with how well you can type on it, it’s really down to preference and down to design.
In fact, low travel distance keyboards, unless they’re found on premium ultrabooks, are usually not as responsive as high travel keyboards. Thus , whether you get a responsive keyboard is mostly down to design.
On the other hand..
If you’ve got a low budget, you should opt for the keyboards that have high travel distance over the keyboards with low travel distance as the former is much easier to design and thus are more likely to be responsive and have great tactile feedback, they’re basically going to resemble the keyboards found on desktops.
The problem is that these are usually thicker and heavier laptops nonetheless the fact they have 1.5-2mm keyboards will pretty much stop you from getting a bad keyboard.
As for thinner budget laptops…
You have to do quite a bit of research otherwise chances are that the low travel keys will not be as responsive since space is limited and thus more difficult to take all components that go in a keyboard into account and make a perfect design.
Ex: MacBooks, ASUS ZenBooks, Surface Devices will all have low travel distance yet are very responsive. Lenovo ThinkPads E-series are budget laptops that are thick and have awesome & responsive keyboards with high-travel distance.
Key Layout
There’s two types of layout: island and conventional.
The figure above shows what an island keyboard looks like. It doesn’t have any advantage in ergonomics or efficiency, it’s just more aesthetically pleasing.
A conventional keyboard will have square keys with all buttons mashed together (less space between keys) as shown below:
What Laptops Have BackLit Keyboards?
As of 2023, you can find backlit keyboards on laptops as low as 350 bucks but the lower you go, the harder it’s going to be to find one. For example, if you’ve got a budget around 350 dollars maybe 5 out of 100 models will have a backlit keyboard.
Whereas 60 out of 100 laptops around 600 dollars will have the backlit feature.
Premium Laptops
The most expensive laptops which are usually super thing and lightweight. They’ll use LED illumination for the backlit feature. You can find them around 700 dollars (ASUS ZenBook) and as high as 1000 dollars (Dell XPS) with the most expensive and best backlit keyboard being the MacBook Pro (1000-1500 dollars).
Gaming Laptops
Only those high-tier gaming laptops (basically with high-end GPUs) from well known brands like ASUS & MSI will have the RBG backlit keyboards. Virtually all of them will come with a software that will make it super easy to program which color to use for the backlit of each section of the keyboard.
Ultrabooks
Every Ultrabook (by this I mean a super lightweight & thin device) will have the backlit feature. When you buy an ultrabook, you should not be thinking about whether it has a backlit feature or not but what other good keyboard features it has: sensor, brightness levels, responsiveness, etc.
Budget Laptops
Like I said, backlit keyboars are becoming more and more common every year. As of 2023, lots of laptops under 500 dollars have a backlit feature the only problem starts when your budget is around 350 dollars. If you want to find the backlit feature at the lowest prices, you have to look for budget laptops that do not have the latest CPU & tons of RAM out of the box, as this is a way the manufacturer has cut down prices and saved up enough to implement the backlit feature on a budget laptop.

Things To Take Into Consideration When Looking For A Laptop With Backlit Keyboard
When buying a laptop with a backlit keyboard, you need to consider several things in a laptop and not just its backlit keyboard, which makes the task really tricky for most people. Below, we will present the main features of a backlit laptop and how to know which types will be suitable for your case.
Processor
As a main part, the CPU determines a laptop’s processing speed at any task. If you want to multitask on your laptop, you should buy one which has a powerful processor, or your laptop will end up hanging every single time you attempt to make it run more than one program.
Most laptops come with an Intel (AMD CPU brand in other cases). Their differences? In terms of power, the Intel has an edge over the AMD. Still, if price is what you consider priority, the AMD appears more budget-friendly
RAM (Random Access Memory)
RAM, also known as computer memory, is your system’s short-term data storage. RAM allows you to multitask and at the same time decides if you can switch among these tasks at a high speed, as it remembers where you are in one task when you proceed to another task.
While 8GB of RAM will suffice for the majority of users, many gamers find a 16GB more comfortable to use. Less than 4GB of RAM is not recommended.
Hard Disk Drive
To put it simply, the hard disk drive helps store all your data including videos, documents, photos, and other system files. Small laptops usually have a storage of 320 GB, and a 500 GB one will be enough for the majority of users.
However, if your budget is generous and you have a lot of stuff to keep, you may want to consider a laptop with 1 TB storage space.
Screen size
Most laptops have a screen of 14 to 18-inch length. Basically, a large screen will provide more satisfying watching experiences and is also more friendly for your eyes.
Regarding this, if you have to work long hours on your laptop or enjoy watching Netflix on it, head for a screen size of around 17 inches. Otherwise, a smaller 14-inch laptop would suffice.
Backlit Keyboard Features
As you are choosing a laptop featuring a backlit keyboard, you should definitely be aware of the most common features these backlit keyboards offer:
Brightness: Not all laptops allow you to control the brightness while some do, usually using one of the F keys. This feature is usually found in premium laptops, the MacBook Air for instance.
Sensor: This helps you adjust the brightness level based on your surroundings and might turn the light off during the daytime.
You should also take a look at normal features of the keyboard. As laptops are getting thinner and lighter every day, there is considerably less room for keyboards, influencing the key size and placement.
If possible, try some simple typing exercises before the purchase. Pay attention to the location of the fundamental keys such as space bar and all. Make sure they are placed in a way suitable for your hand size and typing habits.
Battery
This is a factor not to be overlooked when you choose a laptop, especially that with a backlit keyboard as it can be really power-consuming. A poor battery not only affects your workflow (and consequently your productivity) but also indicates short longevity. If you plan to spend a lot of time on your laptop and do not want to replace it soon, it is important to avoid those with less than 4 or 5 hours of battery life.
Laptop with Backlit Keyboard – A definition
So what exactly is a backlit keyboard?
Basically, it is a keyboard that is illuminated for better visibility and easier access, especially in the dark. The light usually comes from underneath the keys. In most cases, you can adjust the keyboard’s brightness levels.
Main reasons why you should take a laptop with a backlit keyboard into consideration include:
- Helpful in Low Light Conditions: On a public transit such as a red-eye flight, for example, it will give you just enough light to do what you need to do, without disturbing anyone nearby.
- Aesthetically Pleasing: A LED keyboard can light up your laptop’s appearance, not to mention some keyboards’ light come out in colors other than white (ASUS for example, with red backlight).
- Best gaming experience: Most gamers enjoy gaming in low light or in the dark for the most genuine feel and amazing experience.
Therefore, a backlit keyboard increases their typing accuracy under insufficient light, which is the reason why it is featured in most gaming laptops.
FAQs
Q1: Can I adjust the brightness level of the backlit keyboards?
Yes. Most laptops allow you to control the brightness of the keyboard backlight, and some even have the option of deactivating one or all key lights. Usually, you can adjust the brightness manually: press F5 for dimmer and F6 for brighter keyboard.
Q2: What types of laptops feature backlit keyboards?
Premium Laptops, Gaming Laptops, and Ultrabooks are types of laptops that usually feature backlit keyboards. While premium laptops are often expensive ones which usually start at 800$, gaming laptops are those tailor-made for gamers and cost around 1000$ (except for some extremely affordable ones as listed above).
Q3: Do laptops with backlit cost extra money?
Yes. A laptop that does not feature a backlit keyboard generally costs less money. For that reason, it is sometimes suggested that you can cut the expense for your laptop by choosing one without a backlit keyboard.
Q4: What are the problems that a backlit keyboard could have?
All backlit keyboards can be exposed to several problems, among which backlight bleeding is the most popular.
An ideal backlit keyboard will have lighting blocked under each key and not leaked around the edges.
But there’s always more or less backlight bleeding, mainly due to the keys’ misplacement. But there are still some products that have almost no backlight bleeding, like Lenovo ThinkPads or Macbooks.
Conclusion
Choosing a laptop with backlit keyboard is a challenging task for most people. Take a serious time to consider these fundamental questions: “What am I planning to do with my laptop?” and “How much money will/can spend for this laptop?” and you will find the task much more malleable.
Above are our top 7 best laptops with backlit keyboard, and several things to keep in mind while choosing the best fit for you. Good luck with your choice!
How to turn on the keyboard backlight on a laptop

Key backlighting on some laptops is quite a useful option, but not everyone knows how it turns on.
Most users choose exactly those laptop models that have a backlit key function. This is very handy in low light conditions so that you don’t have to type by touch or use the display backlight.
In this article, we will consider the main points of the key backlight mode.
How can I detect if the keys are backlit on my device?
Some experts recommend looking at the row of keys F1 to F12, and if there are icons indicating illumination, there is a backlight mode on the laptop. But in practice this is not always the case. On many models there are several buttons that characterize the light parameter. Manufacturers can allocate backlight indicator keys in different ways. And sometimes users confuse the icons for changing the screen brightness with turning on the keyboard backlight.
Therefore, a guaranteed method must be used. Namely, take the packaging from the device, instructions or documents attached to it and see the laptop model. Then just type in the name in the search bar and read the technical specifications. Usually, information about its availability is indicated opposite the “keyboard backlight” section. The most important thing is to accurately write exactly your model and compare it with the results that the search engine gave out.
Another way is to study the “Windows Mobility Center” section. To do this, select “Control Panel” from the “Start” menu. On the right in the search bar, enter “mobility center” and click Enter. When issuing options, click “Windows Mobility Center” and open the section. If you see the item “Keyboard backlight brightness”, then this means that the option is available on your device.
Enable mode on different laptop models
To enable the key backlight feature on Asus devices, you first need to make sure of the following:
- whether the option is enabled in Bios;
- Whether the drivers have been updated to the latest version.
All this must be done.
If the light indicator is in active mode, then the key diodes will be automatically turned on, taking into account the level of lighting in the room. To adjust this manually, you can use the key combination: Fn + F4 – increase; Fn+F3 – downgrade.
You can activate the backlight option on Lenovo laptops using the Fn + Spacebar combination. If you press them at the same time, the average brightness will turn on. If you press twice, the illumination will increase. The next press will turn off the diodes.
The highlight icon on the HP Pavilion is usually located on the left side of the space bar. Depending on the laptop model, the LEDs can be turned on using the following methods:
- Start the device and press F5 (F12).
- At the bottom of the keyboard is the Fn key and the Spacebar. Pressing them together activates the backlight function.
- If the model supports the keyboard lighting mode, then the key to turn it on is usually indicated by three dots. When pressed, the backlight is activated.
In case the above methods did not work, fully check the entire row of keys F1-F12. The required option for activation may be located elsewhere. If it doesn’t work, go to Bios settings. In them you need to select the “Setup” item and go to the “System Settings” section. If the option is disabled, you must activate “Keys Mode”.
When the backlight turns off too quickly, literally after a couple of seconds, then a timer setting in Bios is required. For this you need:
- Reboot the device and press F10, which will bring up the Bios menu.
- Select the “Additional” section.
- Go to “Device Options” Firmware Options and press Enter.
- Select “Backlight timer” in the parameters.
- Click the Space key to open the settings and set the required time delay.
Note that there may not be such settings in Bios. In this case, this option is most likely not installed in the device. To make sure of this – look at the full description of the model on the manufacturer’s website.
If the laptop is equipped with this option, then to adjust the brightness of the lighting, you need to press the function key two or three times in a row. If the device does not respond to this, then you can do this simultaneously with the Fn key.
Modern MacBooks have automatic brightness detection due to the installed light detector. Parameters can also be configured manually using hotkeys. Automatic switching on of diodes can be configured after a period of inactivity in the Control Panel menu. You need to go to it through the taskbar.
In Microsoft devices, brightness is adjusted using the key combination: Alt + F2 – increase, Alt + F1 – decrease.
Why doesn’t the backlight function work?
Your device software is responsible for adjusting the backlight. The correct driver is required for the function keys to work correctly. On Asus laptops, you need to follow these steps to determine the installation:
- Go to the company’s website and click the left mouse button “Service”.
- Go to the Support menu.
- In the search bar, enter the exact name of the laptop model and go to the appropriate page.
- Select the Drivers and Utilities section.
- Be sure to specify the version of the operating system and determine its bit depth.
- Find “ATK” in the list of available utilities and download the latest version.
- Open the downloaded file with the archiver and click on Setup.exe.
- When the installation is done, restart the laptop and try to re-activate the backlight.
In case this did not work, find the old version of the utility on the manufacturer’s website and install it on your device, after deleting the previously downloaded driver.
Note that the keyboard is connected to the motherboard using a cable. In some devices, it may not be very reliable and break after some time. The connection can also be damaged when trying to disassemble the laptop. In this regard, if installing the driver to turn on the backlight mode did not help, you need to contact the specialists and diagnose the problem.
Output
As a result of the article, we note that today most laptops of different price segments are equipped with LEDs for keyboard backlighting. This feature greatly facilitates the process of working in low light conditions.
Therefore, you still need to know how to configure this mode. This will allow you to use it in practice and help to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

How to turn on, turn off or change the color of the backlight on the laptop keyboard
Keyboard backlight on all laptops can be turned on and off using keyboard shortcuts. For example, to enable it on the Lenovo ThinkPad T series, you need to use the Fn + Space keys. Many laptop users often ask if Windows 10 has a dedicated setting to adjust brightness. The answer is yes and no.
Setting the backlight color on the laptop keyboard.
Does the laptop have a backlit keyboard
Not all laptops have a backlit keyboard. To check if your laptop has a backlit keyboard, go to the support page on the developer’s website or refer to the instructions for the device. Find the right model and its parameters, and then check the specifications of your laptop. You can also determine the presence of such a possibility visually – carefully examine the additional function keys on the device. Usually they are marked with symbols of a different color on the F1-F12 buttons or on the arrows. In most cases, to use advanced hotkey functions, you must also hold down the Fn (Function) button, if available.
How to turn on the backlight
Unfortunately, Windows 10 does not have built-in components for customizing button backlighting. But some major manufacturers offer their own software to change the default button lighting settings. For example, Dell on Windows 10 offers settings for turning on the keyboard backlight, adjusting brightness, and automatically turning off after 5, 10, 30, 60, 300 seconds of inactivity. To view all settings, Dell users need to open the Keyboard Properties setting and then go to the Backlight tab.
Asus and Acer
Turning on the backlight on an Asus laptop takes a couple of clicks. To get started:
- Make sure the feature is enabled in the BIOS.
- Make sure you have updated your drivers (enter your model number and install the keyboard driver).
When the light sensor is active, the ASUS button diodes will automatically turn on/off the LED according to the environment. For manual settings, most Asus laptops use Fn + F4 (to turn on the backlight and increase its brightness) and Fn + F3 (to decrease the brightness and turn off the diodes completely). If Acer laptop keyboard lighting is not working, use the Fn+F9 key combination, or the dedicated keyboard backlight button on the left.
Sony and Lenovo
Sony also offers standard keyboard brightness settings on some of its models. To see the settings, you need to open the VAIO Control Center, and then click “Keyboard” and “Mouse” – “Keyboard Lighting”. Here you can configure the software to automatically turn on or turn off the diodes based on ambient light. Like Dell, Sony also offers the ability to automatically turn off the diodes after keyboard inactivity. To disable the feature, uncheck the box next to the “Enable Backlight in Low Light” button. Here you can also set the automatic mode and the time interval – 10 s, 30 s, 1 minute or “Do not turn off”. Lenovo does not open new horizons for the use of diodes. Turning on the keyboard backlight on a Lenovo laptop is quite simple – using the Fn + Space key combination. That is, when you press Fn + Space once, the driver will turn on the backlight at medium brightness. Pressing Fn+Space will increase the brightness. Pressing the hotkey again will turn off the keyboard backlight completely.
HP
On the road at night or at a presentation in a dark room, it can be difficult to see the laptop keyboard. To avoid such annoyances, choose HP Pavilion models with under-keyboard backlighting that illuminates every key. The highlight character is usually displayed on the left side of a space. If this feature is enabled, you will not have to turn on the light to type a letter or other text. Depending on the laptop model, diodes can be activated in several ways:
- Turn on the laptop and press the “F5” or “F12” key (depending on the model).
- Locate the Fn key next to the Windows button on the lower left side of the keyboard.
Press the spacebar while holding Fn to turn on the backlight.
- Press the key light button if your laptop model has one. The dedicated backlight button is marked with three dots in a horizontal line (found on dv6-2022er, dv6-3250us and other dv6 series notebooks).
If none of the combinations work, check the entire row of function keys. The desired key may be located elsewhere. If still nothing happens, check your BIOS settings. To do this, in the BIOS, select BIOS Setup or BIOS Setup Utility, and then use the arrow keys to navigate to the System Setup tab. Be sure to enable Action Keys Mode (set to Enabled) if it is disabled.
If the light is only active for a few seconds, you may need to set a timeout in the BIOS:
- Reboot the laptop and immediately press F10 until the BIOS opens.
- Then use the arrow keys to navigate to the Advanced tab.
- Go to Built-in Device Options and press Enter.
- Select the Backlight keyboard timeout here.
- Press the space bar to open settings, then select the desired delay.
IMPORTANT. If “Never” is selected, the diodes will be active all the time, which will lead to a rapid consumption of battery power.
If the BIOS does not have this setting, the feature is most likely not supported. More detailed information can be obtained in the instruction manual or on the manufacturer’s website for the laptop model. To adjust the brightness (if your laptop supports it), press the function button two or three times in succession. If that doesn’t work, try pressing Fn along with the function key.
MacBook and Microsoft
All recent MacBook models automatically adjust brightness in low light using the built-in ambient light sensor. You can also configure settings manually using hotkeys. Settings to automatically turn off the diodes after a certain period of inactivity are located in the Boot Camp Control Panel. To open it, right-click the Boot Camp icon in the system tray and select Boot Camp Control Panel. Microsoft Surface users can use Alt+F2 to increase keyboard brightness and Alt+F1 to decrease it. Other popular manufacturers such as HP, Asus and Toshiba do not offer keyboard brightness settings.
Turn off
When it comes to conserving battery life, one of the most effective methods is to turn off your device’s keyboard backlight. This feature is a huge advantage of all portable gadgets. But, unfortunately, not all laptop models support it. Consider turning off the lights using the Microsoft Surface Pro as an example. Surface Pro has a built-in sensor that activates a diode under the buttons to make them stand out. As long as Surface is connected to a wall outlet, there will be no power consumption issues. But if it is running on battery power, activating the diodes will speed up the discharge of the battery several times!
IMPORTANT. The developers at Linus Tech Tips recently ran power-saving tests that showed that turning off the backlight extended battery life by about 16%.
Other useful battery saving settings:
- Remove peripherals, mouse and keyboard (20%-30% more battery life per charge).
- Reduce display brightness by up to 50% (16% more battery life).
The lighting is switched on and off automatically by a built-in sensor. There are also manual controls for the option, but older versions of the Surface keyboard may not have them. The first two keys next to Esc are the function buttons F1 and F2, which control the lighting on the device. If you just click on them, nothing will happen. More precisely, pressing F1 or F2 will not change the brightness of the backlight or turn it off / on. Hold Alt: 9 to access Surface keyboard special features0011
- Increase brightness – Alt + F2.
- Decrease brightness – Alt+F1.
If you want to squeeze the maximum battery life out of Surface, you will have to forego such “goodies”. Of course, in some situations, for example, at night, the backlight is simply necessary, so the manufacturer has provided for an increase or decrease in brightness.
How to change the color of the keyboard backlight
Some laptop models are equipped with different colors. For example, Dell Latitude 14 Rugged 5414. The Latitude Rugged series has a backlit keyboard that can be manually configured. Available colors:
- White;
- Red;
- Green;
- Blue.
Alternatively, System Setup (BIOS) can be used to configure the system to use the two installed secondary colors. To turn on/off the diodes or adjust the brightness settings:
- To activate the switch, press Fn+F10 (if the Fn lock function is enabled, the Fn key is not needed).
- The first use of the previous button combination turns on the lighting at minimum brightness.
- Repeated pressing of the key combinations cycles through the brightness settings to 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent.
- Try several options to find the right one or turn off the light under the keyboard completely.
To change the color of the diodes:
- To view the available colors, press the Fn+C keys.
- White, red, green and blue are active by default. You can add up to two custom colors in System Setup (BIOS).
Backlit keyboard setup in System Setup (BIOS):
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it on and when the Dell logo appears, press the F2 key several times to open the System Setup menu.
- From the System Setup menu, select RGB Keyboard Backlight. Here you can enable/disable the standard colors (white, red, green and blue).
- To set a custom RGB value, use the input fields on the right side of the screen.
- Click Apply Changes and Exit to close System Setup.
IMPORTANT. The keyboard has a Fn key lock feature. When activated, the secondary functions in the top row of keys become standard and no longer require the use of the Fn key.
