Do-it-yourself iPhone 8 battery replacement: step-by-step instructions

Use this guide to improve your iPhone 8’s battery life and performance with a new battery. If the battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions.

This manual explains how to completely remove the display assembly. This is to prevent accidental damage to the display cables. If you feel comfortable removing the battery without putting too much strain on the display cables, you can skip the steps to disconnect the display.

Although the adhesive tapes securing the battery can be removed once you open the phone, the written manual strongly recommends removing the vibration motor first. Elastic adhesives are designed to be pulled at a slight angle. This reduces the risk of accidental tearing of the lower adhesive strips, either by catching them on the vibration motor or by pulling the strips at too sharp an angle.

For optimal performance, after following this guide, calibrate the newly installed battery by charging it to 100% and continuing to charge for at least two more hours. Then use your iPhone until it turns off due to low battery. Finally, charge it continuously up to 100%.

Step 1

Before you begin, drain your iPhone battery below 25%. A charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured.

Turn off iPhone before disassembling.

Remove the two 3.5mm pentagon screws on the bottom edge of the iPhone.

Opening the iPhone display will compromise its water resistance. Have replacement seals ready before continuing with this step, or take care to avoid spilling liquid if you’re reassembling the iPhone without replacing seals.

Step 2

Heating the bottom edge of iPhone helps soften the adhesive that secures the display, making it easier to open.

Use a hair dryer or heat gun, or prepare the iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the iPhone for about a minute to soften the adhesive underneath.

Step 3

Attach the suction cup to the bottom half of the display assembly, just above the home button.

Make sure the suction cup does not block the home button as this will prevent a seal from forming between the suction cup and the front glass.

If your display is badly cracked, cover it with a layer of transparent packing tape to prevent the suction cup from sticking to it. Alternatively, a very strong tape can be used instead of the suction cup. If all else fails, you can stick a suction cup to the broken screen.

Pull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the display assembly and the back of the phone.

Insert the flat end of a plastic spatula into the gap.

The waterproof adhesive that holds the display in place is very strong and requires considerable force to create this initial gap. If you find it difficult to open the slot, rock the screen up and down to loosen the adhesive until you can fit a plastic spatula inside.

Step 5

Slide the opening by prying up the left edge of the phone, starting at the bottom edge and moving towards the volume buttons and the silent switch, breaking the adhesive holding the display in place.

Stop at the upper left corner of the display.

Do not attempt to pry the top edge of the display from the back of the case, as it is held in place by plastic clips that may break.

Reinsert the opening tool into the lower right corner of the iPhone and slide it around the corner and up the right side of the phone to separate the adhesive.

Do not insert the opening tool too far or you may damage the display cables on this side of the iPhone. Insert it just a few millimeters, or about the width of the display bezel.

Gently pull on the suction cup to lift the bottom edge of the display.

Do not raise the display more than 15º or you risk pulling or breaking the cables connecting the display.

Pull the small tab on the suction cup to remove it from the front panel.

Run the opening tool under the display around the top left corner and along the top edge of the phone to loosen the last adhesive.

Slide the display assembly down slightly (away from the top edge of the phone) to release the clips holding it to the back of the case.

Open iPhone by flipping the display up from the left side, like the back cover of a book.

Don’t try to completely separate the display yet, as a few flimsy ribbon cables still connect it to the iPhone’s logic board.

Rest the display against something to keep it upright while you use the phone.

Remove the four Phillips head screws that secure the lower display cable to the motherboard, the following lengths:

Two 1.3 mm screws

Two 2.8 mm screws

them returned to where it was when assembled. Installing a screw in the wrong place can cause permanent damage.

Use the tip of a plastic spatula to pry the battery connector out of its socket on the motherboard.

Bend the battery connector cable slightly away from the motherboard so that it does not accidentally touch the connector and power the phone during the repair.

Use the tip of a plastic spatula to pry the lower display connector out of its socket.

To reattach press connectors like this, press one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Don’t click in the middle. If the connector is even slightly misaligned, it may bend, causing permanent damage.

Use a spatula to disconnect the second lower display cable.

Remove the three 1.3 mm Phillips head screws that secure the bracket to the sensor box connector on the front panel.

Use the tip of a plastic spatula to pry up and disconnect the diversity antenna flex cable from the motherboard.

Insert an opening tool under the antenna flex cable to hold the socket.

Use the tip of a spatula to lift and disconnect the antenna flex cable from the socket while holding the socket with a pick.

Reconnecting this loop can be tricky. Make it easy by holding the flex cable with tweezers so that the plug matches the socket. Then, gently press straight on the connector with the flat side of a spatula until it clicks into place.

If possible, use fingernails or blunt tweezers. Be careful not to pierce the battery with sharp objects.

During this procedure, try to keep the strips even and without folds; the strips with folds will stick together and tear, instead of stretching out neatly.

Also, do not press on the battery while you are pulling out the strips. Pressing on the battery creates pressure points that can snag and break the adhesive.

Slowly pull one adhesive tab away from the battery toward the bottom of the iPhone.

Pull evenly, keeping a constant tension on the tape, until it slides out from under the battery and the back of the case. For best results, pull the strip at as little angle as possible without snagging it on any other iPhone components.

The strip will stretch many times its original length. Continue pulling and, if necessary, grasp the strip next to the battery again.

If the battery adhesive tabs break during the removal process, use your fingers or blunt tweezers to remove the remaining length of adhesive and continue to pull.

If any of the adhesive strips under the battery break and cannot be removed, try removing the remaining strips, then proceed as follows.

Step 31

Repeat the above steps to remove the remaining three adhesive strips.

Be sure to hold onto the battery when removing the last strip, otherwise it may fly out of the iPhone unexpectedly.

If you have successfully removed all adhesive strips, skip the next step.

If any adhesive strip has come off under the battery and cannot be removed, continue to the next step below.

If any of the adhesive tapes come off and the battery remains stuck to the back of the case, remove it by adding a few drops of isopropyl alcohol (90% or more) under the battery next to the stuck strip(s). After about a minute, carefully lift the battery.

Do not try to force the battery out. If necessary, apply a few more drops of alcohol to further loosen the adhesive. Never deform or pierce a battery with a stress relief tool.

If you choose to use tools to remove the battery from the iPhone, be very careful or you could damage the cables or the wireless charging coil directly below the battery.

If the battery remains stuck to the back of the case, prepare an iOpener or use a hair dryer to heat the back of the case directly behind the battery. This will help soften the glue.

Heat iPhone until the back of the case is too hot to comfortably touch. Don’t overheat your iPhone or you could accidentally ignite the battery.

Alternatively, run a strong string (such as dental floss or a piece of thin guitar string) under the battery.

Pull the thread from side to side, sawing along the entire length of the battery to separate the adhesive. Do not deform or damage the battery.

To protect your fingers, wear gloves or wrap the ends of the thread around a tool (such as the two screwdriver handles shown in the picture).

Remove the battery from the iPhone.

If the replacement battery was supplied in a plastic case, remove it before installation.

If there is alcohol left in the phone, dry it thoroughly or allow it to air dry before installing a new battery.

If your new battery does not have adhesive installed, refer to this manual to replace the adhesive strips.

Force restart after build. This can prevent several problems and make troubleshooting easier.

Before sticking the replacement battery, temporarily reconnect the battery connector to the motherboard connector. This ensures that the battery is properly aligned in its recess.
