Wireless Speakers
Sounds like an ion speaker
Transparent artificial muscle learned to play music to prove that electric currents carried by ions, not electrons, can also be widely used in various devices.

Item 1 of 5 University, a transparent disk connected to a laptop plays Grieg’s prelude “Morning” to the play “Peer Gynt”. This unusual speaker is a thin sheet of transparent rubber sandwiched between two layers of gel. A high-voltage current source causes the film to contract and vibrate, reproducing sounds in the entire audible range, from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz.
But this is not an ordinary current. This device cannot be called electronic, since the main work of transferring charge and creating current in it is performed not by electrons, but by ions.
Ionic conductors may well replace electronic ones, and in some cases even provide a number of advantages. For example, they can be stretched considerably and this will not lead to a significant increase in resistivity, as in the case of electronic devices. Ionic conductors can be transparent, making them suitable for use in optical systems. It is possible to select biocompatible gel electrolytes suitable for the manufacture of implantable devices. After all, the electrical signals of the human body are also transmitted by ions, and bioengineers have long dreamed of recreating such a “communication system” in artificial organs.

Ionic speaker demonstrates a high-voltage system capable of rapid change – and it was the slowness and inability to work at high voltages that ionic conductors were reproached in the past. It was believed that high voltage could stop electrochemical reactions, cause the formation of gases and “burn out” the material. In addition, ions, much larger and heavier particles than electrons, tend to move more slowly along an electrical circuit. But Harvard researchers have managed to solve these problems, paving the way for the creation of many new devices – biomedical devices, fast moving flexible robots and adaptive optics.
By using the rubber layer as an insulator, the developers were able to control the voltage in the gel connected to the electrodes and avoid unwanted chemical reactions. The input signal is AC rather than DC, so in a system acting like a capacitor, there is not so much unidirectional movement, but a redistribution of ions, which can be done thousands of times per second.
The demonstration prototype uses a rather simple salt water-based polyacrylamide gel electrolyte, but researchers are willing to experiment with different materials that demonstrate ionic conductivity. The scientists plan to identify combinations of materials that provide good adhesion between layers, durability of devices and optimal performance required to solve certain problems.
