Whenever it comes time to choose a TV, we pay attention to the fact that the name of each model after the brand name contains a certain number of characters. Almost always, these are letters and numbers, which, as it may seem, are in a chaotic order. Often there are more than ten of them, and I really want to understand what they mean.
It is worth noting that the marking in the name of the TV model is primarily intended for employees of technical and logistics services, so manufacturers are reluctant to share official information about this. However, there is no military secret as far as decoding is concerned, and it is not very difficult to obtain this information in various ways. Moreover, a common understanding of marking can really help us out if there are doubts about the origin of a particular model.
Most often, from the name of the TV, you can find out the year of manufacture, screen type, diagonal size, series and other technical information. There is no generally accepted labeling pattern; each brand has its own labeling standards. Since there are a lot of brands, we decided to give a detailed breakdown for the most popular ones. In this article, we will analyze the designations of LG and Samsung TVs.
LG TV marking
All LG TVs can be divided into two types:
- LCD models (MVA, IPS, etc.)
- Models with OLED screen
The fundamental difference between matrices is that in LCD screens, crystals are just a color filter for the light passing through them, while in OLED screens, the crystals themselves are a source of light radiation. Due to this, OLED TVs are thinner, because instead of two layers (a light source and a crystal filter), only one is used, and the quality of color reproduction and contrast is many times better than that of any LCD model. However, this technology is only getting its development, and these TVs are very expensive.
Until 2016, all LG models had a common label, but after that it was decided to label TVs with OLED screens in a new way. They got their own designation, which always starts with “OLED”. However, everything is in order.
TV LG 43UQ80006LB
One of the most popular in 2016 was the LG 43UH610V TV. This model ranks high in the rankings as one of the best with 4K (UHD) resolution. Let’s analyze what the letters and numbers of the marking can mean on the example of this TV.
Screen size
LG 43 UH610V. The first two digits always indicate the diagonal of the screen. In this case, the diagonal is 43 inches. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
Screen type
LG 43 U H610V. The next letter is the symbol for the screen type.
Possible type designations:
- L – LED backlight with LCD matrix
- U – LCD backlight with 4K resolution (UHD)
- S – LED backlight with LCD matrix. Nano cell technology (Super UHD)
- E – OLED screen (in TVs before 2016)
- P Plasma screen (pre-2012 TVs)
- C – LED matrix with fluorescent lamp illumination (now discontinued)
In our case, the letter U stands for a 3840×2160 (UHD 4K) LCD screen.
The S designation appeared only in 2017 for models with improved Nano cell (Super UHD) screens. At the heart of the super-matrix are light-emitting particles only one nanometer in size. Most likely, LCD TVs with this type of backlight in terms of picture quality will successfully compete with OLED screens.
Year of manufacture
LG 43U H 610V. The next letter in the marking indicates the year of manufacture. Possible designations for the year of manufacture look like this:
- V – 2011
- W , M , S – 2012
- N , A – 2013
- B , C – 2014
- F , G – 2015
- H – 2016
- J – 2017
LG TV series
LG 43UH 6 10V. After specifying the year of manufacture, a number follows, which indicates the series of the model.
LG TVs are divided into series depending on the screen size and technical equipment.
- Series 4 – small screen televisions (typically 22 to 28 inches)
- 5 series – non-3D models from 32″ to 50″
- 6 Series – 3D TV Series up to 60″
- 7 Series – 3D TVs up to 60″ with enhanced screen performance
- 8 series – TVs similar to 7 series, but equipped with additional accessories, such as a video camera for communication on the Internet
- 9 Series – Models from 80 to 100 inches with the widest range of accessories available and a high quality screen.
TV LG 43LM5500PLA
LG 43UH6 1 0V. The next digit after specifying the series indicates the model number within the series
LG 43UH61 0 V. This is followed by a number that indicates design features (color, stand shape, design, etc.)
Thus, the marking says that our TV is the first model of the sixth series in a standard design.
Tuner and HD support
LG 43UH610 V . The last letter in the marking usually means the capabilities of the tuner or the ability of the matrix to support a certain resolution.
- T DVB-T compatible
- C DVB-C compatible
- S – support for DVB-S2 (digital satellite television standard), as well as DVB-T and DVB-C
- V – support for DVB-T2, DVB-C and DVB-S2 formats (screen resolution not lower than 1920×1080)
- O – support for DVB-T and DVB-C
- U , B – HD (1366×768) TV screen. This TV does not support Full HD resolution. The screen diagonal is always less than 32 inches.
DVB-T and DVB-T2 are digital terrestrial television standards. That is, the digital TV signal is received by a conventional remote antenna. It is important to understand that DVB-T and DVB-T2 are incompatible, despite the fact that the latter is an improved version of the former. The DVB-T format is adopted as a standard in the countries of the European Union, DVB-T2 is used in the CIS countries (Belarus, Russia, etc. ) If you purchase a certified model, the TV will be guaranteed to support the local terrestrial television standard.
DVB-C is a type of digital television standard used by cable operators. Common to all European countries.
DVB-S and DVB-S2 are digital satellite television formats. If your TV supports DVB-S2, then a satellite dish and a special card from the provider (in the CAM module) will be enough to watch satellite TV channels. If there is no support for this format, then you will have to buy a special receiver (set-top box) to watch satellite channels to the dish.
At the moment, the letter V in the model indication is the most preferred option, since such TVs support all digital signal formats that are relevant for the CIS countries, including satellite. In addition, TVs supporting Full HD resolution (1920×1080) are marked with this letter.
Non-standard LG LCD TV series
There are series of LG TVs that are not labeled in the classic way, solely because they are much more TV-adapted monitors than real TVs. In this technique, after specifying the diagonal, the name of the series immediately follows, consisting of two letters and two numbers, for example, LG 27 MT58 VF-PZ. In this case, it is a MT58 series TV receiver with a diagonal of 27 inches.
- MN, MA, MT Series – 19″ to 27″ monitors
- LN Series – Monitors from 28″
As a rule, in such a technique there are no functions that are provided by the built-in microprocessor, that is, the image is not improved by various software methods, there is no Smart TV and other fashionable modes such as displaying an image on the screen from a smartphone. In other words, a stripped-down version of what is commonly called a TV.
Marking of LG OLED TVs until 2016
As mentioned above, TVs with OLED screens until 2015 inclusive had a classic label. After specifying the diagonal, the letter E was usually indicated, which meant an OLED screen.
In 2014, the marking could look like:
- EB – OLED flat screen TV
- EU Curved OLED TV
In 2015, the type of OLED screen could be designated as follows:
- EF – OLED flat screen TV
- EG – Curved OLED TV
Thus, LG 55 EG 910V is a 2015 curved OLED 55-inch TV, and LG 55 EC 910V is a 2014 curved TV with the same parameters.
Letters and numbers following the type indication are decoded in the classical way.
Be careful! Support for 4K resolution is relevant for all TVs produced in 2016 and 2017. In older models, the OLED screen type does NOT necessarily mean 4K resolution support.
Marking of LG OLED TVs after 2016
In an effort to make it easier for customers to choose, in 2016 LG decided to brand OLED TVs in a new way. To make such TVs more recognizable, the full type name was moved to the beginning of the marking. Let’s analyze the possible designations on the example of the LG 9 TV0050 OLED 55B6V.
LG OLED 55 B6V. The two numbers after the screen type indicate the screen diagonal.
LG OLED55 B 6V. This is always followed by a letter denoting typical design differences. One of 4 options can be specified here: B, C, G or E. Model types are listed in order of increasing technical characteristics and equipment. Marking with the letter C means curved screen. As you can see, our TV has a basic package and features.
LG OLED55B 6 V. The model is followed by the number 6 or 7, which indicates the year of manufacture 2016 or 2017, respectively.
TV LG OLED55B2RLA
LG OLED55B6 V . The last letter in the marking indicates the type of tuner. The following tuner options are available for OLED TVs:
- V, J European tuners (DVB-T/T2, DVB-C, DVB-S/S2)
- D European DVB-T2 HD tuners
- P – American and Japanese ATSC and ISDB systems
For the Russian and Belarusian markets, TVs with a V-type tuner are most often produced. TVs with a P type are not designed for European TV formats. With a very high probability, you will not find them on sale, but in any case, try to avoid such options, otherwise you will need to buy an additional receiver for correct operation.
Samsung TV marking
The decoding principle for Samsung TVs is in many ways similar to the LG marking, but the sequence and meaning of the characters are somewhat different. Modern labeling for Samsung TVs appeared in 2008. To analyze the marking options, let’s take one of the best TVs of 2016 in terms of price / quality ratio Samsung UE50KU6000U.
U E50KU6000U. The first character in the marking is the screen type. The following designations are possible:
- U – LED backlight with LCD matrix
- L LCD fluorescent backlight (obsolete)
- K – OLED screens
- P – plasma panels (not available)
- С – kinescope, CRT screens (not available)
U E 50KU6000U. The second character is the designation of the geographic region for which the TV is intended. In models for the CIS market, the marking will always have the letter E in this place. If another symbol is indicated, carefully study the characteristics of the TV, otherwise connection and use problems may occur.
- E – Europe and CIS countries
- A – Australia, Africa, Central Asia
- N – USA, Americas, South Korea
UE 50 KU6000U. After the region, the screen diagonal is indicated. The possible range of diagonals for household TVs is from 18.5 to 88 inches. Demonstration TVs can have a large diagonal.
UE50 K U6000U. The next letter indicates the year of manufacture of the first model. Unlike the LG label, Samsung indicates the year the first model was introduced to the market, and not the year the specific TV was released. Calendar marking may look like this:
- M – 2017
- K – 2016
- J – 2015
- H – 2014
- F – 2013
- E – 2012
- D – 2011
- C – 2010
- B – 2009
- A – 2008
UE50K U 6000U. After the calendar designation, a letter indicating the screen resolution is indicated. The following options are possible:
- U – 4K (UHD) TVs
- S 4K TVs with Quantum Dot Backlight (Super UHD)
- P Plasma models (no longer available)
The screen resolution type is indicated only for 4K TVs. If a letter is omitted from the marking, then this is a regular TV with Full HD (1920X1080) or HD (1366×768) resolution.
TV Samsung UE50AU7100UXCE
UE50KU 6 000U. Further, the series is indicated in the marking. As with LG TVs, Samsung TV series are divided from 4 to 9. The higher the value, the better the screen performance and technical equipment of the TV.
UE50KU6 0 00U. The second digit is the model number within the series. Focusing on this value when choosing a TV is not particularly worth it. Later variants may have worse performance ratings than the initial model of the series.
UE50KU60 00 U. The next two digits indicate various design modifications. The difference may lie in the color of the case, the shape of the stand, or something else that is not particularly significant from a technical point of view.
UE50KU6000 U . The last letter in the marking (or two letters) means the type of tuner and the design features of the case. Letter designations appeared in 2013. Prior to this, the type of tuner was indicated by a number. Modern values may be as follows:
- U – European analogue and digital standards DVB-T2 /T, DVB-C, DVB-S2 (marked after 2014)
- AU TV cabinet with U tuner and smooth back
- BU TV cabinet with U tuner and textured back
- AB (B) – same as U (marked before 2014)
- AW DVB-T and DVB-C only
- AK DVB-T2/T and DVB-C only
- AT is a model with two tuners. Formats DVB-T2/T, DVB-C, DVB-S2
Be careful! For TVs intended for sale in the European Union, a different marking is relevant. They are designated as follows:
- SD – same as U
- SZ – the same as U, but the TV has 2 tuners of each type (DVB-T2 /T, DVB-C, DVB-S2)
- SS – indicates the presence of DVB-T/C/S2 tuners
- SL – same as SS, but the TV has 2 tuners of each type (DVB-T2/T, DVB-C, DVB-S2)
- S – Same as SS (TV made for sale in the Netherlands), but the tuner can be upgraded with DVB-T2 (T2 Ready).
Marking of Samsung TVs with QLED screen after 2017
In 2017, Samsung decided to introduce a new labeling standard for 4K LCD TVs with quantum dot (Super UHD) backlighting. Previously, in the classical labeling, such screens were designated as S, now they are called QLED (not to be confused with OLED).
Fundamentally, nothing has changed in technology, only the labeling has changed. Most likely, this was done for marketing purposes, so that it would be easier for the buyer to recognize a TV with a new type of LED super backlight. Let’s analyze the new marking on the example of the Samsung QE55Q7FAMU TV.
- Q – matrix type QLED (Super UHD).
- E – Europe (N – for USA, Canada and South Korea)
- 55 – screen size
- Q7 – TV series
- F – flat screen (C – curved models)
- A – the year of the first model in the
- M – stand color
- U – tuner type DVB-T2, DVB-C, DVB-S2)
series
If you noticed, 2017 is marked as A in this marking. It can be assumed that Samsung thus decided to present QLED screens as an alternative to OLED screens, and it seems that this type of screen has a great future. While 4K TVs with QLED screens are still very expensive, they will likely become cheaper than OLED TVs over time.
TV Samsung UE55BU8500UXCE
Non-standard Samsung LCD TV series
As in the case of LG, Samsung also kindly offers various models of TV monitors (Digital TV Monitors) for the CIS market, which are called TVs in online stores. These are all the same monitors with built-in TV tuners. That is, their main difference from real TVs is that such models are not equipped with a computerized control system, which means that they do not have additional image correction systems and everything that is possible only with a processor (no Smart TV, control capabilities from a smartphone, built-in games, etc.).
Samsung has LT series monitors. In online stores in the “TV” section, you can find, for example, such models:
- V32F390FIX
- T27D590CW
- T24E390EX
- T32E310EX
- T24D391EX
- T19C350EX
Be careful, don’t be deceived! On the official Samsung website, this technique is in the monitors section. For example, on the T27D590CW, the TV tuner can only process DVB-T and DVB-C signals. That is, in fact, you will buy a monitor that is not adapted for our digital terrestrial television, but will fit at best for cable TV.
TV models that start with LT, such as LT32E310EX, are also just monitors with a built-in tuner. If you really intend to buy a full-fledged TV, look for a model with a classic marking, all the nuances of which we have analyzed above.
Conclusion. About the most important
The information presented in this article will help you figure out when choosing a TV on the website of our online store.
If you want to buy a full-fledged model, pay attention only to models with classic markings, this is guaranteed to save you from accidentally buying a monitor with TV functions.
When labeling, pay attention to the geographic region first. Remember that American TVs are rated for 60 Hz. Problems may occur even when connected to a network.
The type of tuner is important. In the CIS countries, DVB-T2 is used as an on-air digital standard. For TVs that support only the DVB-T format, you will have to buy a receiver.
Directly on the case of each TV on the rear panel there is an additional marking that will allow you to find out exactly where the TV was produced and for which market this particular model was developed.
In any case, if you have any questions, you can always contact the specialists of our call center and ask your questions. Phone numbers at the top of the page.

- LCD models (MVA, IPS, etc.
)
The DVB-T format is adopted as a standard in the countries of the European Union, DVB-T2 is used in the CIS countries (Belarus, Russia, etc.) If you purchase a certified model, the TV will be guaranteed to support the local terrestrial television standard.
