Overview of Google Chromecast with Google TV (4th Gen) Media Player Stick

The device called Google Chromecast was originally intended only for broadcasting media content (mainly photos and videos) from a smartphone/tablet to a TV screen. However, starting from the third generation of Google Chromecast, full support for Google TV (Android TV) has already appeared there and a control panel has been added, so that the device has become a full-fledged media player – the same, for example, as the very popular Mi TV Stick.

In the current fourth generation of these devices, two models have been released: Google Chromecast with Google TV HD and Chromecast with Google TV 4K. The younger version has streaming only in FullHD (the older one, of course, in 4K), they have slightly different platforms (Amlogic S850x2 for the younger model and Amlogic S905x3 for the older one), well, there are a couple more differences in characteristics: 1.5 GB RAM vs. 2GB and single-band WiFi vs. dual-band.

At the same time, the younger model costs around €40, and the older one costs around €70. In terms of performance and features, they are almost the same, and if you do not need to play 4K content and can easily get by with single-band WiFi, then it is probably better to take the younger model.

Well, now in this review, let’s see what the fourth generation Google Chromecast with Google TV is like (I bought an older model for testing).

Specifications

Model: Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K (4th Gen)
Operating System: Google Android TV 12 90 023 CPU: Amlogic S905x3
Graphics: Mali G31
Memory: 2 GB
Flash: 8 GB (4. 4 GB available to users)
Video formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG
Audio formats: Do lby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos
Wireless: Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz / 5GHz), Bluetooth
Ports: HDMI (CES supported), Type-C (for power)
Dimensions: 162.5x61x12, 5 mm
Weight: 55 g
Prices: “Yandex.Market” from 5 thousand HD version, from 7.5 thousand 4K; €79 4K version on Aliexpress

Delivery set:

Package with the name and image of the model itself, as well as logos of some of the supported services.

Everything is packed very neatly inside.

Scope of delivery: device itself, remote control, batteries for the remote control, power adapter, two-meter USB – Type-C cable, user manual.

Appearance and features

All previous generations of Google Chromecast were round, the new generation is oblong.

The younger model is available only in white, the older one is also available in green and pink. However, given the fact that this is stick , that is, the media set-top box just hangs connected to the HDMI port, behind or on the side of the TV, then, in general, it is clear that the design of this set-top box does not play any role.

By the way, I’ll immediately note that if older Google Chrome models without Google TV could be connected to the TV’s USB port for power, then a new model with such a connection may display a message stating that it needs to be connected to its bundled adapter ( if the TV’s USB port is not delivering the required power).

The bundled adapter outputs a maximum power of 7.5 W, but I checked that the adapter itself consumes up to 2.5 W, so any adapter with a power of 5 W or more is quite suitable, and the USB ports of many modern TVs can deliver the required 5 W (5V/1A).

The bottom of the adapter has a Bluetooth pairing button and an LED to show the status of the adapter. In operating mode, the LED is solid white.

Device operation

Connecting the media player to a TV (monitor) does not cause any problems. The media player is connected to power and to the HDMI port, after which when you switch the TV to this video source, a prompt appears to select the interface language.

You can set up your device directly on your TV, but it’s much easier and faster to do it through your smartphone and the Google Home app.

This is how it all looks in the application.

And this is how it looks on the TV screen.

The media player remote can also be used to control the TV.

The setup process takes a couple of minutes, after which everything is ready to go.

At the bottom of the main screen – the main applications, when scrolling down – all kinds of selection and grouping of media content.

Applications.

From Google Play, you can install any application compatible with Google TV.

All Russian-language services are perfectly installed and work without any problems.

Euronews in Russian – just for example.

If you need to watch media content from your own library located on some external drive or NAS, install the appropriate application that you like – for example, Kodi – and go.

Personally, I use VLC-player for such tasks – it is universal, omnivorous, works with any connected and network devices, and is highly configurable.

VLC sees all devices on the local network.

Browse a network folder on your home NAS.

Play movie from home NAS.

I also note that VLC is very good at remembering the position of watching a movie or series and keeps a corresponding history, so, for example, when watching a series, you will never get confused with which series have already been watched and which have not.

Played 4K video on Youtube.

When connected via WiFi, the video played without any jerks and brakes.

Media player settings.

Here you can switch between different accounts.

And now let’s see what’s “under the hood”.

Operational Observations and Conclusions

A common problem with compact media players is extreme heat, which can lead to crashes and reboots. This device, with a noticeable load (for example, watching a movie with a resolution of 4K), some heating was observed, but the temperature did not rise above 40-43 degrees even with prolonged use, and, accordingly, there were no failures.

The remote is simple and minimalistic, but easy to use, there is also a very useful voice assistant button from Google, and this assistant works as expected (I often use it on a smartphone).

In general, I must say that this media player made a very good impression. But it is to be expected: a device from Google with Google TV – what could be more harmonious in terms of the combination of hardware and software?

And here we get this harmony: the device is convenient, works perfectly and at the same time is also inexpensive.

How is it, you ask, in comparison with the Mi TV Stick? Well, the stick from Xiaomi is also quite a decent device, but I liked this stick from Google more (and, I note, it has less heat, Mi TV Stick, as far as I remember, warmed up more, although this did not create problems).

Should I pay extra for 4K? Obviously only if you’re going to be playing 4K content, and dual-band WiFi would also be very useful.

Was I able to use this device as my home media player (and I’m currently using the awesome Dune Pro 4K II)? I could, of course, but I wouldn’t, and for two reasons: firstly, I need a port for a wired network connection (I watch 4K a lot, and it’s still desirable to have a wired connection there), and, secondly , I need a display that shows the elapsed viewing time. Sticks are deprived of such joys, well, because of this, they are much cheaper. If Mi TV Stick costs €51, then Xiaomi Mi Box S costs under €90, that is, twice as expensive.

P.S. I wonder if Google will release a more advanced media player – with a display and an Ethernet port?
