      Definition of the term “Incinerator”

      The incinerator is a plant for the disposal of various types of waste through high-temperature controlled decontamination followed by flue gas treatment.

      Etymology of the word “Incinerator”

      Incinerator – (from lat. Incineratio – burning, burning, turning into ashes, incinerating, combustion), the literal meaning is a furnace for burning. The term first occurs in 1520 in a French source.

      History of incinerators

      The first industrial municipal incinerator was patented in 1876 by Alfred Fryer. burning.

      The Horsefall Destructor, built in Bradford in 1900, was the prototype of the modern grate incinerator.       Incinerators are designed for disposal of the following types of waste:

      Fundamentals of incinerator technology

      Waste incinerators vary in both type and performance, but according to global standards, they must be equipped with the following technical units:

      1. Two chambers 9000 7: waste combustion chamber and afterburner chamber .
        In the first chamber, the waste is exposed to the flame of burners at a temperature of 800-900 ° C in conditions of excess oxygen provided by blowing air into the chamber.
        In the second chamber, afterburning of flue gases takes place at a temperature of 1200-1300 °C, at which all compounds are destroyed to their constituent elements.
      2. Gas cleaning system , consisting of several stages: cleaning from acidic residues, cleaning from solid particles (fly ash), cleaning from secondary dioxins and some other pollutants.
      3. Combustion heat recovery system . This system is optional and is installed only on productive incinerators. It allows you to use the heat of combustion to produce hot water, steam or electricity.

      For many types of waste there are alternative methods of disposal, which is the reason for the sharp criticism of incineration technology from a significant number of environmentalists. However, for some types of waste (for example, medical and biological), incineration is a priority disposal method. In addition, the lack of separate waste collection in the Russian Federation is an insurmountable obstacle to the introduction of alternative methods of MSW disposal.

      Incinerators: types of furnaces

      Incinerator plants are divided according to the type of furnace on the basis of which they are made.

      Deck Furnace Incinerator

      The incineration chamber is a deck oven where the waste is loaded by a feeder. Such furnaces are used for compact incinerators with small capacity from 50 to 200 kg/h. Also, KTO type incinerators can be equipped with a system of agitators for better burning of waste.

      Rotary Kiln Incinerator

      “The incinerator is a horizontal rotating drum into which waste is fed through an automatic feeder. Drum ovens are installed with a slight inclination in the direction of waste movement. During combustion, air is supplied to the chamber to improve the combustion process. The temperature in the furnace is maintained at 850-950 °C.

      Incinerator based on cyclone-vortex furnace

      The most efficient type of equipment for the disposal of liquid and gaseous waste due to high power with small volume. Waste is pumped into the combustion chamber – a cyclone reactor. The air enters the furnace in a controlled vortex flow. The temperature in the combustion chamber reaches 1500 °C. When liquid waste is disposed of, the salts contained in it enter the salt removal chamber.

      Grate incinerator

      Grate incinerators are the most common type of productive municipal incinerator. Waste falls on a moving grate, which provides better combustion than in a rotary or deck kiln.

      Fluidized Bed Incinerator

      This type of incinerator is used for the thermal treatment of sewage sludge and similar waste.

      Marine incinerator

In addition, as a result of the treatment of any remains in the plant, a safe bottom ash is formed, which can be buried in a landfill and will not harm nature, or, in some cases, it finds use in construction or other industries. It turns out that even if after processing the waste they are buried in a landfill, there is no negative impact on the environment, and there is also no large area for landfills.
