Cat breeds prone to litter problems: sestratk — LiveJournal
One of the most annoying behavioral problems that can happen to a cat is litter box ignoring or territory marking. Many cat owners come to me with a request to help in such a situation. Most often, toilet problems are associated with incorrect litter box configuration or improper litter training, but there are also exotic reasons, such as a genetic predisposition to certain factors that cause litter neglect.
The propensity to mark territory can be genetically transmitted, and predisposition to various diseases can also be genetically transmitted. That is why, as one of the reasons for ignoring the tray, I always consider genetics.
At the very beginning of the article, I will make a reservation that before looking for exotic reasons for ignoring the tray, it is worth checking the health of the cat for diseases of the genitourinary system and making sure that the marks are not related to the fact that the cat is not neutered.
Most often, the solution of health problems and timely castration completely eliminates the problem of ignoring the tray and markings.
So, let’s look at breeds that, for one reason or another, are more likely to ignore the litter box than other cats.
1. Savannah, Caracat, Bengal cat.
These breeds have a common feature – they are hybrids. That is, these breeds are a cross between a domestic cat and its wild counterpart. So the savannah is a hybrid of a serval and a domestic cat, the caracat is a hybrid of a caracal and a domestic cat, and the Bengal cat is a hybrid of a domestic and wild Bengal cat.
Ordinary domestic cats have evolved alongside humans for many thousands of years, and over many generations have adapted to domestic life alongside humans. A man by artificial selection and selection selected cats for various reasons, including clean behavior at home. In hybrids, the blood of their wild counterparts from the jungle flows, and the more this blood, the stronger their wild instincts and needs.
So, these cats need much more physical activity than the rest, many of them (especially the first generations of hybrids) will mark the territory if they are not walked, but kept in a small room or even in a country house without walking and a permanent aviary on the street.
It should be borne in mind that the further the wild ancestor in the pedigree, the less likely the manifestation of “wild” instincts. That is why not all such cats will mark in a row, but only a part of them.
At the moment, the work of the breeders of these cats should be directed towards the culling of lines of animals prone to marking. If you are buying a kitten, ask if the graduates of the cattery are prone to unscrupulous behavior.
Maine Coon
2. Maine Coon.
Maine Coons are wonderful cats and rarely give out problems with marking the territory, but they have another problem – ignoring the tray. This propensity is related to their size and predisposition to certain diseases.
Very often I meet the problem of litter ignoring by representatives of this breed, when the owners get such a cat in a small apartment and install a tiny litter box for her. It is clear that if you want to pee, then you will pee in such a tray, but cats may not tolerate inconvenience with the toilet. And when a cat is a meter long, and she needs about the same tray for a comfortable toilet, you either have to put up with a tray the size of half the room or pee in the bath or on the sofa.
Therefore, it is worth taking into account the needs of large cats and installing appropriate toilets for them.
The second reason Maine Coons ignore the tray is their genetic predisposition to hip dysplasia. If a cat has joint problems, it can be difficult for her to overcome even small thresholds, and it can also be painful to sit down in a position for defecation and urination. Such pain can lead to litter neglect and uncleanliness as the cat constantly tries to avoid the pain and changes litter areas.
The third reason is the weight of the cat. The lighter the cat, the more comfortable it is for its paws on any surface, and the heavier it is, the more discomfort will be caused by foreign objects under the paws. So, if there is an uncomfortable large filler in the tray, a heavier animal will experience the most pronounced discomfort and may refuse the tray.
3. Scottish Fold.
This cat breed is prone to many diseases, and one of them is a severe hereditary disease – osteochondrodysplasia. This disease causes problems with the skeletal system and joints and leads to chronic pain. And although the Scottish Fold is a rather miniature breed, but high (and even not very high) sides of the tray and large filler granules can cause exacerbation of pain in such cats. Also, like Maine Coons, these cats can experience pain in defecation and urination positions and because of this, change the location of their “toilet” several times during the day.

Persian cat (Himalayan cat, exotic).
These cat breeds tend to ignore the litter box due to a predisposition to a certain disease – polycystic kidney disease. The condition is hereditary and can lead to other comorbidities such as chronic kidney failure. With polycystic kidney disease, a cat may experience chronic pain in the kidneys, both while urinating and outside of it, which can cause a lot of stress and contribute to litter ignoring and marking.
Unfortunately, this disease is incurable and such cats may suffer from it all their lives and sometimes or constantly ignore the litter box. British cats and Scottish cats are also prone to this disease (but to a lesser extent), since a Persian cat was involved in their breeding.
Also, you should not think that if you have a mongrel cat, then she cannot have some reason for marking or ignoring the litter box related to genetic predispositions. Perhaps the grandmother of your striped Murka took a walk with a wild forest cat or a Persian neighbor in her summer cottage.
Always check your cat’s health carefully if she has problems with the toilet. After all, joint problems and kidney disease can be found not only among high-bred comrades.
