Buying advice

Subjective, but we’d recommend the LG C2 as the best OLED TV for most people right now. It’s not the cheapest, but it’s got a great set of features for both movies and games at 4K, a refined design, and a price that’s actually very reasonable considering the level of quality. Also worth considering is 2021’s LG C1, which is an older model now but one that can be found for relatively cheap as retailer’s look to clear out old stock.

If you’re strictly on a budget, then we’d recommend checking out the Vizio h2 series OLED TV. These sets generally run slightly cheaper than the equivalent displays from LG and still offer a great level of picture quality and smart TV capabilities. For sheer bang for the buck, these displays are absolutely amazing for watching shows and movies. They also support 120Hz at 4K for all you next-gen gamers out there, but some sites (including ours) have reported frame skips when running this display flat out. It’s also not the brightest OLED TV on the market when compared to its rivals.

Are OLED TVs better than 4K TVs?

Firstly, it’s important to note what each term actually means: 4K is a reference to a television’s image resolution capability, while OLED is a display technology. That means the two are not really comparable – it would be like asking whether racing games are better than Xbox games.

In fact, OLED TVs are available in multiple resolutions, including 4K. Instead, the better question would be whether OLED TVs are better than non-OLED sets, such as LED/LCD or QLED TVs. In that sense, the answer simply comes down to personal preference.

Many will argue that images offered by OLED TVs are superior to those delivered by regular TVs using traditional LED/LCD technology. OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) screens offer deeper black and more accurate contrast than competing display technologies because each pixel can be turned on or off individually.

Motion of images is also much smoother, making OLED TVs excellent for sports, movies, and gaming. This refined tech also allows the world’s leading TV manufacturers to make OLED TV sets incredibly thin.

That said, there is a trade-off that comes with most OLED TVs, in that they’re currently incapable of reaching the same high levels of brightness that an LED/LCD TV can. This is because traditional LED/LCD TVs are backlit, which allows for far greater (but less accurate) brightness.

All this cutting-edge design and technology means OLED TV prices can be much pricier than most regular 4K TVs. Prices are coming down all the time though, especially on the 55-inch and 65-inch models. Good thing we’re here to show you the lowest prices, right? Also, if you can afford the 77-inch OLED TVs we’d very much like to be friends.

Will OLED TV deals be cheaper in 2023?

OLED is an expensive technology and likely to always carry a premium versus the usual LED 4K displays that proliferate the market. Not only is it costlier to produce than LED, but it’s much more difficult to mass produce in high numbers. Generally speaking, we tend to see prices from the big brands stay roughly constant each release cycle.

That said, over the past few years we’ve seen more budget-focused brands like TCL and Vizio enter the OLED TV deals market with cheaper displays. While they often don’t tend to offer quite the same quality and features as the more established brands, these displays are getting better and better each year and definitely worth keeping an eye on. You’d be surprised at how cheap these sets can get over big retail events like Amazon Prime Day or Black Friday.

Speaking of which, these big sale events are also great for picking up discontinued or soon-to-be discontinued models from LG or Sony. While lacking some of the latest features or design refinements, these displays are often still amazing while sporting discounts that easily exceed those being offered on the newer models. A good example of this is the LG C1 OLED vs the latest LG C2 model.

Are OLED TV deals worth it?

So you’re looking for the best of the best, but don’t want to spend over a grand to realize you can barely tell the difference between your new and old displays. That’s understandable – these are some pretty pricey TVs. OLED TV deals can sometimes feel like an extortionate amount of money to pay for a new screen, but if you’re looking for a premium viewing experience they will definitely make up for their costs in sheer wow-factor.

Perfect blacks, excellent viewing angles, knife-edge clarity and that oh so crisp picture quality often bring a new lease of life to even the most tired of Netflix’s catalogue and the oldest PS4 Pro titles. If you can score that premium viewing experience while meeting your budget, these OLED TV deals will be more than worth it for that moment you first press the power button.

the best sets you can really afford

A review of the best budget OLED TVs seemed unthinkable a couple of years ago. While OLED technology has long been used for premium TVs from Sony, LG, and Panasonic, it’s taken a while for the transition to more affordable TVs, and it’s only now that the word “budget” is starting to apply.

OLED TVs offer the deepest blacks and most realistic colors of any TV, and even these low-end OLED TVs showcase the technology’s enormous picture potential.

Don’t worry now. You’re not going to buy an OLED TV at the bargain price that some LCD TVs can be found for. Most of these kits still go over the £1000/£1000/AU$1400 mark and up, but when you can expect to pay double or triple that for a flagship kit, that’s a significant savings indeed.

Our selection includes some of the best products from LG, Panasonic, Sony and Philips. Most of them offer better prices on a very respectable 55-inch screen, but LG’s first 48-inch OLED is also on the list for those with a bit less space (or budget) to play with.

If you’re looking for a great deal, keep reading to discover our selection of budget OLED TVs you can buy right now.

1. Best budget OLED: LG OLED48CX.

Simply great 48″ OLED TV
Features

Screen Size: 48 inchesResolution: 4KPanel Type: OLEDSmart TV: WebOSHDR: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision

Reasons to buy

+ Superb image quality + Gorgeous design

Reasons to avoid

-No HDR10+ support -Currently no UK catch-up apps

The LG C Series has long been an outstanding demonstration of how to balance features and performance at a reasonable price. But as we just mentioned, “smart” in OLED terms doesn’t always have the same meaning as it does elsewhere.

However, the latest CX introduces a 48-inch OLED display for the first time. It’s one of the smallest OLED TVs you can currently buy – along with the 48-inch Sony A9S – and it’s priced lower to match while still offering the same panel as the top tier. This means that for $1499 / £1499 (around AU$2000) you can get one of the best performances this year.

CX has only minor changes compared to the previous C9 model, key being the new a9 Gen 3 processor. This provides improved image processing, which means you’ll notice things like improved shadow detail, increased peak brightness in HDR scenes, as well as improved color handling.

At only a couple of millimeters deep, it looks the part too, and gamers will be pleased with the low input lag. We’re also completely impressed with the connectivity options, including four HDMI 2.1 inputs with eARC support.

It has a few drawbacks, one is the lack of HDR10+ support, and the second is that the normally excellent smart TV platform webOS currently lacks catching up UK apps. However, this is still the best OLED TV you can spend your money on this year.

That said, keep an eye out for LG’s 2022-2023 TVs on the way, including the successor to the LG C1 OLED, the entry-level A1 OLED (almost certain to appear on this list) and the OLED G1 Gallery for those with more money to splurge. .

2. Best for upscaling: Sony Bravia KD-55A8.

Fine picture in all directions
Features

Screen Size: 55 inchResolution: 4K Panel Type: OLEDSmart TV: Android TVHDR: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision

Reasons to buy

+ Gorgeous, exquisite image + Superb scaling

Reasons to avoid

-No HDR10+ -Android TV still hiccups

For those on a budget, the Sony A8H/A8 OLED TV strikes the perfect balance between price and performance by borrowing premium OLED features from the Sony A9G Master Series and offering them at a lower price point.

For starters, the A8 has a more understated design than the flagship line, offering wide height-adjustable feet and an unobtrusive metal frame.

Connectivity is great, with four full-featured 4K HDMI inputs for gaming, and there’s an Android TV that, despite its issues, is getting better with every iteration. Thanks to YouView, most of the catch-up and on-demand services you might need are available and fixed.

The picture quality certainly doesn’t let you down, and the A8’s sophistication in dark scenes and subtle color work is something to behold. Even better, serve something in standard HD and this set will shine too with market-leading upscaling. However, it’s not the brightest screen we’ve tested, so it’s best suited for dark rooms.

Sony Acoustic Surface audio technology is on board here and sounds fantastic. This is one of the most effective built-in audio solutions that you can hear even with Atmos content.

You can buy the 55″ version of this set for $1899 / £1799, or if you want to step up in the range you can try the 48″ A9 – more compact but with higher specs. an alternative – which is now available for about the same price.

3. Best value for money: LG OLED55BX.

Some compromises, but still fantastic
Features

Screen Size: 55 inchesResolution: 4KPanel Type: OLEDSmart TV: WebOSHDR: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision

Reasons to buy

+ Rich colors and crisp detail + Excellent quality

Reasons to avoid

– No HDR10+ – Not the latest processing

LG’s entry-level B Series is a fantastic way to experience OLED excellence at a reasonable price.

LG’s 2022-2023 entry-level

OLED has just launched – the BX OLED – and is available for around $1,200/£1,200 for its 55-inch version. 9The 0003

BX doesn’t bring many changes from the previous B9, with the exception of this latest model getting a slight processing boost with the new a7 Gen 3 chip, which itself is a step down in capabilities from LG’s a9 Gen 3 chip . OLED models of the CX and Gallery series.

However, it offers the same image benefits as its predecessor, including excellent color vibrancy, deep blacks and contrast to make its images truly vibrant. However, the same image defects remain – there is some motion stuttering around suddenly moving objects, as well as persistent graininess and banding in dark scenes. While true blacks are fine, using OLED’s ability to turn off pixels entirely, less defined shadows aren’t as brilliantly implemented.

However, the BX still offers great value for money, with an excellent WebOS smart TV platform and a very attractive price point for a budget OLED TV.

Check out the LG A1 OLED, which will also be the new entry-level OLED model for 2022-2023.

4. HDR Hero: Vizio OLED H-1 (USA).

Vizio entry-level OLED surprisingly good value for money
Features

Screen Size: 55 inchResolution: 4KPanel Type: OLEDSmart TV: SmartCastHDR: HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, HDR10+

Reasons to buy

+ Stunning 4K HDR images + Dolby Vision and HDR10 support +

Reasons to avoid

-Not as bright as other OLEDs -SmartCast has some issues

The

Vizio OLED H-1 was a bold new entry into the OLED TV market last year, offering stellar 4K HDR imaging and an OLED panel at a very affordable price.

At just $1,299, the Vizio OLED costs about the same as the LG BX, but it tends to get much bigger discounts, dropping to $899 during Black Friday sales.

You’ll get a sharp image here, though best suited for 4K HDR with grainy upscaling that can’t compete with the processing used by LG or others. The SmartCast interface is also a little sluggish, and several key apps are missing, although that’s not a problem if you’re playing a movie or TV show. The HDMI 2.1 ports also just didn’t work during our review: the PS5 couldn’t transfer data, and the Xbox Series X was limited to 60Hz output, suggesting the technology wasn’t implemented properly.

Once you’ve got all the details worked out, you’re left with a good budget OLED display that outperforms 4K HDR content and falls short of HD upscaling. It has some issues right now, but we hope they will be fixed in the near future via over-the-air updates.

– Static stand – Fewer motion processing options

The

Panasonic HZ980 came as something of a surprise announcement from Panasonic midway through this year, considering it already had a three-tier OLED offering in 2022-2023.

However, it was a welcome option, especially for those on a budget, offering the same panel, processor and 30W Dolby Atmos speaker system as the excellent HZ1000, but £300 less.

This means you can buy the 55-inch model for £1,699, which is the cheapest of any Panasonic OLED at launch.

So what are you sacrificing for this savings? In fact, very few. First, HZ9The 80 offers a static stand instead of the swivel stand seen above, so you can’t adjust the viewing angle as easily. Secondly, the Motion Drive Pro technology is a step down from what you’ll find in the HZ1000, so you can expect a slight but noticeable difference in the way motion is handled.

We haven’t really had to test the HZ980 yet, but given the five-star performance of its close sibling, the HZ1000, we don’t expect a huge performance difference. Of course, at this price, a slight bump in image processing is expected. But that still seems like less of a compromise than the LG B series, which uses a cheaper, lower-spec processor than the LG CX, so we’re not ruling it out.

Samsung Electronics and LG Display are currently in talks to supply the latest OLED panels, focusing primarily on the budget segment of their respective products. This is reported by the publication The Elec , citing its own sources in the industry.

Top-earning TV retailer Samsung is releasing OLED models this year for the first time after years of hiatus. TV panels will be purchased from Samsung Display and LG Display.

In its relationship with LG Display, Samsung’s focus is on purchasing M-series OLED panels, which are the cheapest in LG’s portfolio. It is known that the company produces three series of OLED panels: R, P and M. R belong to the premium segment and provide a brightness of 200 nits, P and M – 180 and 150 nits, respectively. In an effort to reduce the cost of TVs as much as possible, Samsung intends to purchase the most budget options – the cost of panels accounts for a third of the price of TVs.

According to The Elec, Samsung intends to take advantage of its position as the world’s most famous TV brand to promote products based on budget solutions.
