The HP ENVY Inspire 7200e/7220e is a superb home printer for Mac due to its wireless connectivity options and the ability to work with AirPrint. Wireless printing at home allows any capable home device to print without needing to connect to a cable. In our testing, we found that it handled standard document printing with ease and also had decent photo print quality as well, a feature that makes this a great all-around machine for home office users. With Apple moving towards USB-C ports, this will also mean that you do not need an adapter to connect your laptop to your printer. Instead, you can print wirelessly. While Mac computers (iMac, MacBook, Mac Mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro) can print wirelessly to most printers, the fact that this printer has AirPrint means that the compatibility between Apple devices and the printer is enhanced. Apple devices can print without needing extra drivers and have a wide range of printing options natively.

The HP DeskJet 2720e is our choice for a great budget printer for your Mac. While it still functions well when paired with a Mac and has a low price, this printer has a few caveats worth mentioning. Its printing speed is rather slow, at only 8.5 pages per minute in black and white or 6 pages per minute for color. Additionally, there is a small paper capacity of only 60 sheets. However, when buying a budget printer, some things need to adjust to make it a cheaper overall product. This printer can print from USB, SD card, and other wireless devices.
While we have not yet had a chance to review this unit, we think this is a printer worth mentioning based on its feature set and price point.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to choose the best printer for Mac for you
When it comes to picking the best printers for Mac, you’ll need to consider a few key features to ensure they align with your printing requirements. Firstly, consider how often you’ll need to use the printer. If it is to satisfy many users in an office, you’ll need something much more robust than, say, a printer servicing a single user at their home office desk.
By the same token, consider the space you have available to house your new printer, and what other functionality you’ll be expecting from it. Most printers these days can also scan, copy, and some even offer fax capabilities, so decide which of these – if any – you intend to make use of. Finally, consider additional touches like look and feel, which may be particularly important for those keen to ensure their printer doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb in an otherwise smart home office.
The best printer for Mac: How we test
Printers these days do more than just print onto paper, so it’s only right that we’ve tested all of the features and functions of the products featured on this list of best printers for Mac.
Having said that, just as smartphones should still be able to make phone calls, we’ve ensured that the printers on this list can still execute their number one role. That means testing print speeds, paper sizes, and paper capacity.
After that, we’ve compared other functions like scanning, copying, and even faxing, while additional factors like touchscreen displays, size and weight, and aesthetics have also been analyzed.
In the business world, where the wire is an increasingly unwelcome figure, connectivity is of the utmost importance, so we’ve also run the rule over the Wi-Fi, AirPrint, and Ethernet options on these printers. Finally, we’ve also noted the costs of each printer, incorporating both the initial outlay and also the general running costs (.e.g ink) of each.

How We Decided
Mac computers and software are designed to recognize and connect to printers easily, especially when it comes to wireless printing. At the outset of our research, we only looked at printers that could connect wirelessly via Wi-Fi. Macs can connect to multiple printers connected to the same network, and it’s easy to manage your printing preferences from there. While most Apple users print wirelessly, we also made sure that printers could connect to macs with a USB cord as well.
Mac users also tend to use other Apple devices, like iPhones and iPad. We made sure that printers had the functionality to connect and print with those devices, too, preferably through Apple AirPrint. That way, you know you can print wirelessly without having to install additional drivers. If a printer has an app you can use to manage the printer and control workflow, we made sure that it was available on iOS and worked well on it. You can also check out our list of the best iPhone photo printer for more compact and portable options that will work great with Apple products.
After ensuring that connectivity was seamless, reliable, and fast, we looked at print quality. Mac users often use their printers for photo printing and high-quality color printing, so the ability to print in color was a must. Further, we looked at printers that could print in high-definition color or very close to it. We looked at the number of ink cartridges used, print head technology, and nozzles per cartridge to judge color print quality, detail, and vibrancy. If you print a lot, you may want to look for a printer with a refillable ink tank, like Epson EcoTank, that is compatible with Mac to help you save on ink costs in the long run. Of course, if you don’t need the ability to do colored prints, you can opt for a monochrome printer.
Best Printers for Mac Buyer’s Guide
When you’re looking for the best inkjet printer for your home or just the best inkjet printer all around, you want to make sure you buy one that will fulfill all your printing needs. And, you need to make sure that your new device is printer-computer compatible with your printer. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with a home printer that doesn’t do what you need.
Now, let’s get into the most important features you should keep in mind while shopping for a printer.
The Most Important Features to Consider
- Mac Compatibility
The most important feature to consider when searching for the best printer for Mac is, as you can guess, printers compatible with Mac computers. Mac OS is designed to wirelessly recognize the most up-to-date printers without installing any drivers.- At a minimum, you want to look for printers that can print via Wi-Fi, as this is generally the easiest and quickest way to interface with your Mac.
- If you select a great all in one printer for Mac in 2023 and opt to connect via a wired connection, like USB, you’ll likely need to purchase a separate cord that is compatible with the printer and your Mac’s connection. Most current Macs use USB-C inputs.
- In short, this means that even the best printer for Mac in 2023 may not have the appropriate connections.
- Although, if you buy an inexpensive printer with an SD card slot, then you may be able to use an SD card to print quality images from your Mac instead.
- AirPrint and iCloud
As with most high-end Mac-compatible printers, you’ll want to use the relevant Apple app. For example, if you want to print from iCloud or your other Apple products, like iPhone and iPad, look for great Mac printers that are Apple AirPrint enabled and have the ability to connect with iCloud.- Apple AirPrint is a feature developed by Apple that allows your Apple devices to instantly recognize a printer and make use of its features. This smart feature can be used with many great home office printers.
- AirPrint and iCloud are exclusive features available only on macOS and iOS so you’ll need iPhone, iPad, or Apple Macs, but Google Cloud Print is compatible with multiple other operating systems. Google Cloud Print can handle print jobs over an internet connection while AirPrint uses WiFi. Thankfully, printer manufacturers have models that are versatile enough to do both.
- It’s the easiest way to print directly from the iPhone and iPad.
Some printers offer direct connect options with iCloud or offer a mobile app that acts as an intermediary for the cloud service.
- With a dedicated printer, users can benefit from excellent print quality and have the reliability of being able to print on a daily basis.
- Its exceptional ease of use can make a model a convenient choice for someone wanting a simple user interface so they can perform printing jobs with ease. It can speed up your print productivity whether you use the printer frequently for work or casual everyday printing.
- However, if you’ve outgrown your free iCloud storage, you can always upgrade to a larger size with an Apple subscription. It’s ideal, especially if you’ve purchased a cheap printer. That means on top of your upfront cost being lower thanks to a budget printer, your cost per print will also be less expensive, and you’ll be able to afford more storage.
- This is especially useful if you’re using the printer for work and need to store multiple print cartridges and glossy photo paper.
- Now if you’re apprehensive on having to learn AirPrint and just want to tackle everyday home printing or a variety of tasks with ease without messing with WiFi or Bluetooth connections, these aren’t essential features and you can opt for a wired printer or one that has both wired and wireless connectivity. Some even use Ethernet connectivity if that port for printing is more up your alley. Some Macs have ports for Ethernet connections, and there are also Ethernet adapters available. These wired options can still be an excellent choice if you find they fit your needs better. And if you come across a wired printer you like, make sure its cords are good quality that can pull off the fastest printing speeds, like a high-speed USB connection.
- Therefore, to help you out, we’ve compiled a list of the best printers for Mac 2023 that offer great features and high-quality output in both wired and wireless options.
- Quality and Versatility
Macs are powerful machines with a wide range of functionality.In addition to seamless integration with Mac OS and iOS, make sure that the printer you choose has the features you need to make the most of what you use your Mac for. If your goal is to produce high-quality prints from colorful documents or images, look for excellent printers with great color resolution and multiple ink color cartridges to get that great image quality.
- The best wireless printer for Mac Pro should be able to produce vivid colors on color documents, print quickly and provide a range of connectivity options.
- If you use your Mac for business, prioritize models that offer great workflow features and efficiency. Though it’s tempting to opt for a budget model in a lower price range, investing in a quality office printer with advanced features like fast printing speeds along with professional-quality prints will contribute positively to your business. If you need to print out large amounts of sheets of paper, a fast printing speed will save your business a lot of time.
Double-check the plain paper capacity of the printer, because some who want to print large volumes will want a generous paper load tray as well as an automatic feeder.
- If you print on more than plain paper, like a wide variety of paper types like business card or glossy photo paper, a multifunctional Mac printer can be a great investment as well to get you excellent print quality across different paper types. A color touchscreen can also speed up operating the actual printer versus one that uses buttons. If laser printing is more up your alley, take a look at certain models like the best laser printer.
- Some printers can handle more varieties of printing tasks, like printing on different sizes of paper, so if you have unique paper sizes that you need to print things on, make sure your printer is compatible with the maximum paper size that you need to print.
- If you don’t have a lot of space at home, make sure you look for a compact printer with a sleek design. That compact size will help make room for other objects.
The best printer for Mac in 2023 should also have a range of features, such as wireless printing and automatic document feeders.
- If you want to save on paying for ink cartridges, make sure you consider one of the best printers with cheap ink or printers that have a tank that is compatible with Macs. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a great printer for a Chromebook or you would like to learn how to print with mobile without WiFi, then have a look at our site for more great reviews and info guides.

Sophisticated creative inkjet printer.
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet printer | Print speed: 15ppm | Paper sizes: A4 | Paper capacity: 100 | Weight: 6.6 kg
Pros:
- 6-color printing precision;
- Attractive design.
Cons:
- Expensive – from 170 €;
- Small paper tray.
This 3-in-1 inkjet printer looks like a premium model and has the right specifications. It prints with six individual ink cartridges for superior color reproduction and prints photos at 4800 x 1200 dpi. There’s AirPrint connectivity for Mac users, and it also includes an SD card slot for photographers. It can automatically print both sides of a page, scan at high resolution, and with its rear paper feed, it can handle almost any kind of print media from blank CDs to nail stickers. The printer is quite compact given its great list of features, and it’s all manageable via the large color touchscreen.
2. Epson Expression Premium XP-6105
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet printer | Print speed: 23ppm | Paper sizes: up to A4 | Paper capacity: 500 | Weight: 12.1 kg
Pros:
- Compact design;
- Good price – from 125€.
Cons:
- Expensive cartridges;
- No touch screen.
Epson has succeeded in reducing the 3-in-1 printer to the size of a square shoebox without losing any functionality. Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, and AirPrint let you easily connect to your Apple device without the need for Ethernet or USB cables. It also offers automatic two-sided printing, convenient USB and SD card slots, and the ability to print on a wide variety of media, from blank CDs to glossy A4 photo paper. It lacks a touchscreen, but it’s easy to use and the print quality, especially with photos, is excellent.
3. Brother DCP-J774DW
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet MFD | Print speed: 12ppm | Paper sizes: up to A4 | Paper capacity: 100 | Weight: 6.6 kg
Pros:
- Compact and affordable;
- SD card and USB ports.
Cons:
- Slow;
- No fax.
Brother’s entry-level 3-in-1 inkjet printer packs all key features such as automatic two-sided printing and cloud printing into a delightfully compact device. The tilting display is easy to read, but if you’re using an Apple mobile device, you can download the free iPrint & Scan app, which is especially well thought out. There are front and back USB ports, an SD card slot, and Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi Direct so it connects well. The printer prints somewhat slower at 12 ppm in mono, but duplex documents look crisp and consistent, and photos on glossy paper look realistic enough for a budget model.
4. Epson EcoTank ET-M1120
Category: mono inkjet printer | Print speed: 15ppm | Paper sizes: up to A4 | Paper capacity: 150 | Weight: 3.5 kg
Pros:
- Very economical refills;
- Simple / nice design.
Cons:
- Slow print speed;
- High cost.
The initial price may seem intimidating, but this print-only device contains enough black ink for 6,000 pages and refills are much cheaper than cartridges. Epson’s sleek design won a Red Dot award, and we have to agree that there’s something refreshing about filling a visible reservoir with an ink bottle. There are a few features here, even AirPrint, but the companion iOS app is excellent and works particularly well on a Mac. Wi-Fi is built in and it can output duplex pages at a somewhat slow but steady 15 pages per minute, and there’s room for 150 sheets of paper in this upgraded unit.
5. Epson Expression Home XP-2100
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet | Print speed: 8 ppm (mono) | Paper sizes: A4 | Paper capacity: 100 | Weight: 4 kg
Pros:
- Very low price;
- AirPrint and Ethernet.
Cons:
- No automatic duplex;
- Slow printing.
At this hefty price point, you might not expect much from a printer, but this 3-in-1 can print, scan and copy in color at decent resolution. For Apple users, there’s built-in AirPrint-enabled Wi-Fi, and the companion Epson iPrint app makes it even easier to print and scan remotely via iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately, there’s no auto duplex mode and no LCD, but it’s capable of printing on a wide variety of media, holding 100 sheets of A4 plain paper in the main paper tray, or 20 sheets of photo paper. Usually the advantage of cheap printers is the cost of replacement cartridges, but in this case, Epson Starfish inks are also fairly competitively priced.
6. Canon Pixma G5050
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet printer | Print speed: 13ppm | Paper sizes: up to A4 | Paper capacity: 250 | Weight: 6.5 kg
Pros:
- High page detail;
- Low ink consumption.
Cons:
- Expensive – from 260 €;
- Slow printing.
This costly but economical AirPrint all-in-one has changed its cartridges for refillable ink tanks. This greatly reduces your ink costs per page, and Canon has enough ink for 6000 black and white pages and 7700 color images – hence the hefty price tag. The printer prints quite slowly, but with a paper capacity of 350 sheets (250 in the main tray plus 100 in the rear tray) and such a high output of ink, it can continue to print for quite some time without interruption. It is equipped with Wi-Fi and auto duplex and can be easily controlled by iOS/Android app.
7.
Epson SureColor SC-P600
Category: A2 color inkjet printer | Print speed: 3ppm | Paper sizes: up to A2 | Paper capacity: 100 | Weight: 8.7 kg
Pros:
- Roll paper option;
- Bright prints A2.
Cons:
- Big footprint;
- High operating costs;
- Cost from $685.
This A2-only device is suitable for any business that needs to produce professional wide format color documents. The resolution of 2880 x 1440 dpi is close to the resolution of your Mac monitor, using nine-color Epson UltraChrome HD ink for natural color reproduction. These cartridges come in 80 ml capacities and the paper feed has also been improved to be able to fit a whole roll of paper into the printer. Not surprisingly, such a device takes up quite a lot of space and is expensive, but these costs are much lower than the cost of ordering your posters from copy centers.
8. HP Deskjet 3630
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet printer | Print speed: 20ppm | Paper sizes: up to A4 | Paper capacity: 500 | Weight: 12.1 kg
Pros:
- Instant dry ink;
- Low price.
Cons:
- Expensive cartridges;
- Fragile plastic .
This 3-in-1 printer costs less than £40 (about $52). Of course, the benefit lies in the relatively high price of the ink cartridges, but if you purchase an HP Instant Ink subscription, even that cost comes down. The printer itself is quite fragile, but it is well equipped with Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and AirPrint for easy mobile printing from your Apple device. The free iOS app is also very user friendly.
9. HP Color Laser 150nw
Category: color laser printer | Print speed: 18ppm | Paper sizes: A4 | Paper capacity: 150 | Weight: 10 kg
Pros:
- Small price and size;
- AirPrint and Ethernet.
Cons:
- No automatic duplex;
- No display.
This color laser printer has no LCD display, no USB port on the front and generally has very few features. It can’t even print on both sides of the page. However, if you only want to print on plain A4 paper and don’t need automatic two-sided printing, then this basic device is ideal for printing quickly and cheaply, so to speak. Wi-Fi with AirPrint is built in, so it connects easily to a Mac or iOS device, and it’s one of the few printers that comes with a USB cable.
10. Canon Pixma G4510
Category: 3-in-1 color inkjet printer | Print speed: 10ppm | Paper sizes: up to A4 | Paper capacity: 100 | Weight: 5.4 kg
Pros:
- Low ink cost;
- Lots of ink included.
Cons:
- High price;
- Small display.
By replacing ink cartridges with bottled ink, this inkjet printer is much more productive and significantly reduces cost per page. You can clearly see when ink tanks are low, and built-in Wi-Fi and AirPrint compatibility make it easy to scan and print from your Apple device and iOS app. There are two-sided printing, automatic document feeder and fax functions.
