The best compact printer enables you to print photos, documents, and more, in high quality, without taking up a lot of space. That’s great when you’re working out of a small home office, and also helpful if you’re taking your printer out on the road. To help you find the right one for your needs, we’ve gathered together the best compact printers available today below.

Note that we’re not talking about the best portable printers here. The way they differ is that compact printers print on ordinary-sized paper, whereas portable printers use smaller, specialized paper. In other words, a compact printer will do pretty much everything a larger printer can, just in a more space-efficient way.

That said, many compact printers are designed with travel in mind. Some can connect wirelessly to your laptop or tablet, and they may even come with rechargeable batteries, so you can use them away from a wall socket.

As a scaled-down version of a desktop printer, the OfficeJet 250 enables full-sized printing on letter sized plain paper, as well as on glossy photo paper. And it comes complete with a built-in color scanner and color screen, enabling easy photocopying on the fly.

Usefully for portable printing, it also includes its own rechargeable battery pack, so you can print anywhere. Pros
  • Very affordable with solid features
  • Compact with streamlined silhouette
  • Fast printing speeds for black and color
  • Lightweight at only 5 pounds
  • Works with Alexa

This small inkjet all-in-one wireless printer takes top prize for its affordable price point and solid lineup of features. For starters, it has a compact footprint and a low-profile silhouette, with rounded edges so it’s less brick-like than the competition, plus it offers wireless printing and fast print speeds—19 ppm for black, and 15 ppm for color. While it isn’t considered a portable printer, at about 5 pounds, you can easily move it from room to room if you share a workspace.

More features are available through the HP app—everything from scanning documents from your smartphone to ordering toner—and it works with Alexa. Also, your first four months of ink are free with optional enrollment in HP Instant Ink.

The printer doesn’t have extras you might find in higher-end models, like an auto document feeder and LCD display, which is in line with its low price.

Pros
  • Extra features punch above its price point
  • Auto document feeder and duplex printing
  • Color display with on-screen menus
  • 17 pages per minute (black)
Cons
  • Slower color print speed
  • Slightly bulky and heavy

There’s a lot to like about this wireless Brother all-in-one inkjet color printer, which offers several nice-to-have features that our top pick above lacks—and for only a slight bump in price.

Highlights include a 20-page capacity auto document feeder, 50-sheet capacity adjustable paper tray, auto two-sided printing, and borderless printing, plus remote printing and a customizable interface through the app.

There’s also a 1.8-inch color display with on-screen menus that are easy to navigate, and it turns out a respectable 17 pages per minute in black. Drawbacks are a slower color print speed of 9.5 ppm, and despite a compact footprint, the overall design is somewhat bulky, and it weighs a hefty 16.5 pounds.

Still, it’s an excellent value overall and a great choice for anyone who wants a reliable printer with a few convenient extras.

Cons

In addition to its compact size, it’s also more modern and streamlined than some of its clunkier competitors.

Other highlights include a letter-size flatbed scanner that prints both sides of an ID card on a single sheet of paper, wireless self-reset for fluid connectivity, and plenty of other features through the HP app. For the price, we only wish it had auto duplex printing and scanning, and an auto document feeder.

Pros
  • Incredibly compact and lightweight
  • Fast printing speeds, plus photo printing
  • Color touchscreen menu
  • Auto document feeder 50-sheet paper tray
Cons
  • No duplex printing
  • Expensive

Portable printers often don’t perform as well as their slightly larger counterparts, but the all-in-one HP OfficeJet 250 is the exception —though it’ll cost you.

It prints up to 20 black and 19 color pages per minute, plus color photos up to 8 x 10, from your laptop, smartphone, or tablet. Its stellar lineup of features includes a 2.6-inch color touchscreen menu, a 50-sheet paper tray, and a 10-page auto document feeder. There’s also has a long-lasting battery that fully charges in 90 minutes with the printer off using the included power cord.

In terms of overall size and design, it doesn’t get more compact, at only 15 inches long, about 8 inches wide, and only 3.6 inches high. It’s also incredibly lightweight at just 6. 5 pounds. The biggest drawback for this small printer is that it lacks two-sided printing.

How to choose a portable printer

Handheld portable printer is selected based on characteristics such as size, battery life, speed and format of printed files. It also takes into account the support of the OS under which the print will take place. Before buying, the user must decide which files will be printed mainly, and then select the device according to its characteristics.

Print size

Most portable mini printers print smaller than A6. But there are models that support A4. The image quality on budget devices usually does not exceed 300-320 dpi, which is enough for texts and photos with low contrast. Expensive photo printers support a resolution of more than 1000 dpi, which improves the depth and saturation of the image, sharpness, and clarity.

Print speed

Portable devices print slower than desktop devices. In this case, if the printer prints pictures, you must wait until the frame is fully developed. On average, the speed is about 50 seconds per printout. Black and white files print faster than color files.

Dimensions and weights

Photo printers are usually small and fit in a pocket or bag. A4 format equipment takes up more space, which is why it is used at home or in the office. For home use, you can choose a larger model.

Battery capacity

Battery life will vary depending on the type of battery used. Portable photo printers for smartphones can print 10-20 sheets on a single charge. Notebook devices can also be powered by the mains. An additional battery can be purchased.

Additional criteria

What is also important to pay attention to:

  • Synchronization method. Used Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB. Older models are equipped with an infrared port.
  • Ink consumption, cost. Mobile printers spend more, and the resource of the cartridge itself is lower.
  • Print paper type. It can be glossy, matte photo paper, labels, postcards.
  • Print technology. Compact miniprinters work primarily with inkless thermal printing and are called ZINK Zero Ink. For work, a special thermal paper is used, which, when heated, shows different colors. No ink needed. Also, printers work on the usual inkjet technology.
  • Memory capacity, the ability to output data from external drives.
  • Additional functions. These are direct printing, borderless printing, collage creation. The more features, the more expensive the device.
  • Producer. It is better to give preference to well-known brands that produce office and photo equipment. These are Canon, Epson, HP, Xiaomi.
