5 things you need to know about License-Free PMR446 Walkie Talkies

In general, two-way radios are incredibly user-friendly. However, there are a few features to bear in mind when choosing a new set of walkie talkies. Here are five things you’ll want to consider:

1.

Maximum Range

One of the most important factors to consider when deciding what 2-way radio to buy is the range you need them to cover. The maximum range capable on consumer 2-way radios using the PMR446 frequency on a transmit power of 0.5W is up to 10km. However, that could only be achieved in ideal conditions: at a high altitude with no obstacles between the two radios. Unless you are using your walkie talkies to communicate between two mountain tops, it’s unlikely that you will achieve this sort of range. In a built-up urban environment, the maximum range is likely going to be a lot lower. However, a good quality radio should provide adequate range for the vast majority of users. If you need anything over and above that, then you will need to consider a more powerful two-way radio. These require a license, though, and are much more expensive than license-free models.

2. Number of Handsets

When purchasing a set of two-way radios, you will also need to think about the number of handsets you need. A twin set may be enough for a camping trip, but busy warehouses will likely need a lot more so that everyone can stay connected. Thankfully, though, the price of each handset comes down when you buy in bulk. We offer a wide range of two-way radio bundles to cater to every customer’s needs. We also stock single handsets if you want to expand your setup at a later date.

3. Channels & Privacy Codes

License-free two-way radios have a fixed frequency that they can transmit on: PMR446 Most license-free two-way radios have either 8 or 16 channels, which tune the frequency on which the handsets communicate with one another. In addition to the channels, there are typically a number of privacy codes. Contrary to what the name suggests, these do not guarantee the privacy of your transmissions. Rather, they allow users to chat freely without interference from others, which can be a problem if you are using them in an area like a ski resort where a lot of other two-way radios may be in use

4.

Battery Type

Some two radios are powered by regular alkaline batteries, whilst others come with rechargeable batteries (some of which include a charging dock). If you intend to use your two-way radios for more than a few days and won’t have regular access to a power outlet (eg. on a camping trip) then a model which takes regular batteries or both would be a better choice. On the other hand, we would recommend rechargeable 2-way radios for regular use. That’s because the cost of replacement batteries can quickly add up, and used batteries can be bad for the environment if not disposed properly.

5. VOX & Hands-Free

Voice Activated Transmit, or VOX, allows you to use your two-way radios hands-free, If you are mountain climbing, or part of a motorbike convoy, then this can be an extremely useful feature. With this mode activated, the radio’s microphone remains on at all times. When it picks up the sound of your voice, it will automatically start transmitting, and switch off when you stop speaking. These models will also come with a socket for a headset or throat mic. Not all two-way radios come with VOX, so be sure to check the product specs if this is something you’re looking for.

The best brands for two-way radios

Two-way radios are a fairly niche product, and many people won’t be familiar with the various brands out there. To help narrow down your options a little, we’ve compiled the following list of the best two-way radio brands:

TOP radios for all occasions. Which walkie-talkie to choose and how to do it correctly

Walkie-talkies are communication devices that transmit voice messages in places where other communication gadgets do not work. Such devices differ in operating wavelength ranges. Selected of them operate exclusively in the city, as they actively suppress interference on the air. Other species are successfully used in the forest, on the banks of rivers or in the sea due to a stable signal over long distances. From the foregoing, it follows that the choice of the best walkie-talkie directly depends on the conditions for its further operation, and a review of the most popular models will help with this.

What types of radios exist

Depending on the place of use, radios are divided into the following types:

  • used outside the city – suitable for hunters, tourists, fishermen. They receive a signal well at different levels of terrain and are distinguished by a large radius of action, they retain a charge for a long time.
  • professional – designed for the military and rescuers, have signal coding.
  • used in urban environments – for builders and security guards. They receive the signal well, suppressing extraneous noise.
  • motor vehicles – designed for taxi drivers and truckers, has high-quality noise reduction.
  • used in shipping – with the obligatory approval of the River Register of the Russian Federation and the certificate of the Ministry of Communications. Reliability, signal range, special protection against water.

Rules for choosing a walkie-talkie

Let’s now figure out how to choose the right walkie-talkie. Before making a purchase of a particular device, it is important to understand its characteristics, choosing the option that will suit you.

If you are just starting to think about which model to choose, it is recommended to pay attention to such parameters as:

  • Type of device. To date, there are several types of such a device on sale: VHF / UHF, LPD, PMR, CB. The last option is relevant for use outside the city, in open areas. Obstacles can be of great importance, since this type of transmitter is not able to overcome them. For city use, PMR is recommended. This type of walkie-talkie is able to cope with any obstacles (even large high-rise buildings). Type LPD will be an excellent solution for almost any application. While the VHF / UHF standard is already a professional option. Such walkie-talkies will work great in a dense forest, a large metropolis or mountains. The standard must be chosen based on the requirements that you place on the device;
  • Transmitter power selection. This parameter affects the signal transmission distance. The higher the power, the greater the distance the signal will travel. Walkie-talkies with a transmitter up to 2 watts provide communication at a distance of up to 1 km, a power of 3-4 W provides high-quality communication at a distance of up to 5 km. Walkie-talkies with a power of 5 W are capable of covering a distance of 10 km on rough terrain. If you are choosing a walkie-talkie, then it is better to choose a power of 5 W, it will definitely not be superfluous;
  • Frequencies for work. This parameter is important, because according to the law of Russia, radio amateurs can only work on a certain frequency. If they end up on the banned ones, then this can be fraught with problems, because it is believed that they violated the law. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to check this parameter even before purchasing the device;
  • Housing protection. The walkie-talkie is a device that can be used in a variety of conditions, for example, when fishing or while hiking in the forest. As a result of use, the gadget will be exposed to various negative external influences. Moisture cannot be excluded. Most models have a special protective case, so if you plan to use the device in an open area, it is better to take this parameter into account;
  • Weight. This parameter is also recommended to be taken into account when choosing a walkie-talkie. If you choose the option for a long hike, then you should not choose a heavy model that will cause discomfort. True, this parameter does not apply to professional devices, since they all have a lot of weight;
  • Nutrition. An important part of the process of choosing a walkie-talkie is the choice of battery. Modern models may have built-in Li-Ion, Li-Pol or battery type. The latter option is more practical, because you can replace the batteries that are dead at any time. For a battery-operated walkie-talkie, you will need to look for an outlet to charge it, which may not be possible in hiking conditions;
  • Screen present. The display on the walkie-talkie is optional, but with its help you will be able to determine exactly the frequency you need, use the menu settings and the rest. Most buyers prefer to choose a walkie-talkie equipped with a display, especially since many models are additionally equipped with a backlight;
  • Outdoor antenna. With its help, you can significantly increase the sensitivity of the transmitter, improving the quality of communication. If the model is equipped with a removable antenna, then you need to clarify whether it comes with the device. Some walkie-talkies that have a built-in antenna can often have poor performance. All this needs to be clarified before making a purchase of a particular model;
  • Built-in speaker. The clarity and clarity of the sound that will be transmitted will directly depend on the speaker. More budget walkie-talkies usually have a simple speaker that cannot transmit voice normally. It is important to pay attention to the quality and power of such an element. Before buying a walkie-talkie in a store, it is recommended to personally check the sound quality. It is recommended to choose a high-quality speaker if the radio station is not capable of supporting a headset connection, because in this case the speaker will become the only way to reproduce voice;
  • Brand rating. If you decide to choose a walkie-talkie, you should also pay attention to what exactly is its manufacturer. There are several leaders on the modern market, namely:
    • COMRADE. Specializes in the production of professional radios;
    • Motorola. The presence of a wide range of models and great popularity among buyers;
    • UNION. Domestic brand, characterized by high quality products;
    • TurboSky. Engaged in the development of modern models of radios;
    • Baofeng. Engaged in the production of inexpensive models;
