10 facts about San Diego | USA
San Diego is one of the best and most famous resort cities, one of the top 5 tourist destinations in the USA, located on the Pacific coast in California. Compared to sunny Los Angeles, the tourist infrastructure is better developed here, including the old city and modern skyscrapers, a strip of beautiful beaches along the bay, grandiose amusement parks and shopping centers with branded boutiques, wonderful restaurants and inexpensive cafes with a variety of cuisines and specialties. all over the world. Every traveler is sure to find something different in San Diego, from a good hotel to an unforgettable vacation experience.
Tourists looking for a seaside vacation are drawn to the city of San Diego for its sandy beaches, bright sunshine and mild climate, with better weather than foggy San Francisco, suitable for year-round tourism. And family travelers are primarily interested in visiting famous attractions here, such as the San Diego Zoo and the SeaWorld Aquarium.
Before you travel to this wonderful city of contrasts and a mixture of different cultures, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the basic facts about San Diego California We also visited here during one of our independent trips around America, and in this article we have collected everything you need to know about San Diego to help you – the most interesting and important information about the city and useful recommendations for tourists.
Facts about San Diego
Let’s list the most interesting, in our opinion, facts about San Diego:0004 in southwest California USA on the Pacific coast, very close to the border with Mexico. Judging by the geographical position of San Diego on the US map, this is one of the largest cities in the south of the country, and the neighboring city in Mexico called Tijuana is literally a stone’s throw away (you can get to the border by tram).
- Life in San Diego is so calm and measured that in many houses the doors are not even locked. It is not customary to rush here, as in large cities.
- Houses in San Diego line wide streets and look clean and tidy due to strict laws that encourage residents to keep a close eye on their property.
- Time in San Diego is 10 hours behind Moscow in summer and 11 hours in winter.
2. You can get to San Diego by car or bus, by boat, or by plane. Independent travelers are advised to pre-book a car at Los Angeles Airport using the link, as we did (read our review about car rental in LAX).
How long is the flight to San Diego? Airplanes regularly fly from major cities in the USA, Mexico and Canada and there are direct flights, but it will not work to fly to San Diego from Moscow without transfers. You will have to use flights with 1-2 connections. First get to New York or Los Angeles, and then fly local airlines to San Diego Airport , also known as Lindbergh Field. Travel time will be 18-20 hours. View flights →
Here are the three most popular bus and air travel routes:
- Los Angeles – San Diego (distance 120 miles, travel time 3 hours)
- Las Vegas – San Diego (distance 330 miles, travel time 5.5 hours, 1 hour flight)
- San Francisco – San Diego (540 miles distance, 9 hours travel time, 1.5 hour flight)

3. Good sunny and warm weather in San Diego is observed almost the whole year. The mild Mediterranean climate and the absence of hurricanes is one of the main advantages of San Diego compared to the beaches of Miami. In general, it is not very hot here, the air temperature in summer is very comfortable and is about + 26-28 ° C (almost like in the Maldives), and in winter – around + 20 ° C. It rains in San Diego mainly in winter, and in summer it is dry and sunny, not a strong refreshing wind blows from the ocean.
Important to know: The temperature of the water in the bay is cool enough for swimming and swimming – no more than +20°C. Therefore, if you are going to spend more than one day in San Diego, then it is better to choose a hotel on the coast with a good pool, such as the Marriott Marquis.

Latin America or their descendants. And in the 16th century, the Kumeyai Indians lived on the territory of the city of San Diego, until the Europeans sailed there – the first was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who founded the port of San Miguel.
San Diego Coast
Today, San Diego has a population of about 1. 5 million (more than 3 million with the suburbs), a third of which are Hispanic and about 16% Asian. Whites still make up the majority of the city’s inhabitants. San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest city in the United States.
5. Holidays in San Diego are not as expensive as in Miami or Hawaii, but still quite expensive due to high prices for houses, hotels and hotels, expensive tickets to amusement parks and expensive restaurants as well as good shopping opportunities. According to spending statistics, on average, about $ 200 a day goes out per person.
Thus, a trip with children to the beaches of San Diego lasting from 1 to 2 weeks on average costs 4-7 thousand dollars for four, plus air tickets, which is approximately comparable to an inexpensive vacation in the Maldives. You can go to San Diego for 2-3 days inexpensively for 500 dollars, but you will have to live not in the center.
6. Hotels in San Diego , unlike hotels in New York, are for every taste and budget. To make it easier to decide on housing, we wrote an article about which area to choose a hotel in and where it is better to stay for 1-2 days. It is better to book a room in advance for 2-3 months, so as not to overpay at the last moment.

7. San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa City Park (this is the largest and most famous San Diego Park like Central Park in New York) and covers an area of about 40 hectares, which grows many species of exotic plants and contains more than 3500 animals, including including the rarest, such as the giant panda and the red panda.
Interesting fact: It was in the San Diego Zoo that a short video about an elephant was filmed, which became the very first uploaded to YouTube.
San Diego Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world, with no enclosures for every species of animal. To see it in its entirety, it will take more than one day. By the way, in this zoo you can not only walk, but also ride a bus or travel by air on a hanging gondola.

San Diego Park Zoo , a safari park and a performance with killer whales at SeaWorld Aquarium ), it is better to immediately buy a single ticket for $149 , so it will be cheaper than separately.
8. The beaches of San Diego are known far beyond the US. A long and well-equipped strip of coast ideal for a beach holiday stretches for many tens of kilometers along the Pacific Ocean. Americans, Mexicans, Canadians and sometimes Europeans come here. Despite the fact that there are enough beaches for everyone, the question arises, which of the San Diego beaches is better to choose?
Map of San Diego beaches
We visited some of the beaches in San Diego and generally liked them because they were clean and not as crowded as the beaches in Los Angeles. Despite the rather cool water, it is pleasant to sunbathe on them, but the most interesting thing is to meet beautiful sunsets on the beaches of San Diego. But swimming is not very convenient, unlike the beaches of the Maldives so beloved by us, since there is nowhere to escape from the waves of the ocean.
In our opinion, the best beaches in San Diego are:
- Coronado Beach , with clean, algae-free sand, is an ideal place for children to enjoy as it is sheltered from the waves of the ocean by the Point Loma peninsula;
- Ocean Beach is great for surfers and people who love being active and having fun;
- La Jolla Beach with sandy coves, picturesque coastline and fur seals.

- Point Loma Lighthouse at Cabrillo National Monument
- San Diego Maritime Museum

Also located in San Diego is the largest naval base of the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet.
10. Near San Diego there is only one national park – Joshua Tree (distance 260 km, drive 3 hours), and in the city itself is the Cabrillo National Monument. It was very interesting for us, as independent travelers, to wander there among the rocks and unusual Joshua trees, and then go to spend the night in Palm Springs.
If you want to see the desert nature and wander on the rocks, you can visit the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, located in the east of San Diego County in the Colorado Desert, a 2-hour drive from downtown (90 miles). This park is fun to drive in a 4×4 vehicle along special routes among the sand and rocks, and it is also where the famous Pacific Hiking Trail or Pacific Crest Trail begins.
Interesting to know: Every summer San Diego hosts the international Comic-Con festival (since 1970), originally dedicated to comics and their characters, and later to other pop culture phenomena – television series, fantasy, video games, anime, horror, etc. For 4 days it is visited by about 200 thousand people.
If you are going to go to San Diego for the first time, be sure to watch an interesting video about the rest:

As you probably already understood, San Diego is a resort for absolutely everyone, but with its own characteristics. Some people here will like to spend 2 weeks on the beaches, while others will only need a couple of days to get an impression of the city. In any case, it will be interesting, so choose the right time for your trip to San Diego and pack your bags for the trip! Have a good holiday in the USA, dear readers!

Hotels in San Diego – what to choose and where to stay
Are you going to go to San Diego, but don’t know what hotel to choose and book there? In the article we will recommend good hotels in the center of San Diego, on the beaches and near the airport. We visited this interesting city, which is located almost on the border with Mexico, but before the trip we could not decide for a long time where it would be better to stay there for 1-2 days in the center or other areas, so that it would not be very expensive and close to attractions. As a result, we read a lot of tourist reviews about hotels, reviewed many accommodation options on Booking.com and collected a lot of useful information about the best rated hotels in San Diego 3, 4 and 5 stars, which we are happy to share with you.

Important to know: San Diego’s areas of interest to tourists are located quite far from each other, but many of the city’s attractions are concentrated in the city center. When choosing a hotel, be sure to take into account its location on the map, so that during a trip to San Diego you don’t spend a lot of time on the road, but you can see more and still have time to relax.
San Diego Neighborhoods
Our References:
Good to Know: San Diego’s southern suburbs of National City, Chula Vista, and San Ysidro are pretty tepid places to live due to their proximity to the border.
Therefore, we do not recommend booking hotels in them, despite the lower prices.
Interesting fact: The closest hotel to the border with Mexico is located literally 500 meters from the border crossing – Rodeway Inn San Ysidro. The room costs only $60. It is quite decent, and the reviews of the guests are good. So those who are going by car from the US to Mexico, you can take a chance.

5 star hotels
Hotel del Coronado on the island of Coronado, with an authentic setting, but at the same time very stylish and modern.
Rising grandiosely above a pristine beach, the Del, though already looking as impressive against the backdrop of ultra-modern skyscrapers, as it did in 1888 when it first opened, it still makes a big impression. Hotel prices in San Diego
In our opinion , prices in San Diego hotels are not the highest, especially compared to other popular resorts such as Orlando and Hawaii. Judge for yourself:
- Double rooms in the cheapest hotels will cost about 55-65 dollars for 1 night;
- Decent 3-star hotels with a good breakfast not in the center cost an average of $70-80 ;
- A room in a comfortable hotel in the city center can be booked for $95-140 ;
- For a four-star suite you will have to pay an average of $130-250 ;
- And in the most luxurious hotels in San Diego 5 * prices are lower than in the best hotels in Los Angeles.
Their value is $250 to $500 $90,004.
To register at the hotel and pay for the stay, one of the guests must provide an identity card and a bank card (debit or credit).

It is important to know that the price of the hotel when booking does not include taxes and fees ( 11-15% ), the cost of parking (in tourist areas it is still about $20-30 per day) and additional services, as well as an insurance deposit (usually about 100-200 $90,004), which many hotels block on the card during check-in and return after check-out. It is better to leave deposits in cash so that they are immediately returned upon check-out (the return of the amount blocked on the card can be expected for a long time). Although sometimes a deposit is not required at all or it can be paid in cash.
