Read online “The police of the city of Lissa”, Oleg Vyazankin – Litres
Cobblestone street descending to the sea, an elderly man hurriedly walked. His whole figure was somehow awkward: extremely wide trousers and a rather voluminous waist could not be combined with narrow shoulders and a small head, which was crowned with a dark bowler hat. From a distance, the figure of this gentleman seemed completely triangular, which was aggravated by the cloak, the skirts of which swelled from fast walking.
– How is he not hot? Inspector Morrison asked. However, it was nothing more than a thought out loud. The weather really did not require such warm attire: Senior Constable Barnsley, standing next to the inspector on the spacious balcony of the police headquarters, even fanned himself with a large postal envelope, although the sun was beginning to set, and the heat was no longer the same as during the day.
– I dare say, age. My mother is over seventy, so she gets cold in the summer.
The inspector nodded silently and the constable continued:
– So, I thought that he had nowhere else to hide this bike, like in his aunt’s shed – she barely goes, she never looks there herself, and he has the key. I approached: and sure enough, there were wheel marks on the ground in front of the shed! I go straight to him. “What are you,” I say, “want to go to court? Stealing on your own street is generally the last thing!” At first he pretended not to understand, but when I asked him to take the key and open that shed, he almost burst into tears. Nineteen years old, and such a shame! He says he got jealous – he wanted exactly the same bike for a long time, but it was painfully expensive.
– Understood. Morrison ran his hand over his short mustache. Have you drawn up a protocol?
The constable bowed his head guiltily:
“That’s it, sir… I thought enough talking. He has already returned the bike, the owner has no complaints. He quarreled, but forgave. And writing the protocol according to all the rules means that the guy will be judged. Did I do wrong, sir?
– No, that’s right. But let them look after the guy.
– I do.
While the conversation was going on, the clumsy gentleman reached the corner where barrels of fish were being unloaded and asked the workers something. They pointed in the direction of the police department.
– And the gentleman is coming to us. Jim, meet me, find out what’s up with him.
The constable smiled faintly, as he always did when the boss called him simply by his first name, and went to the first floor. And after a couple of minutes he brought into Morrison’s office a gentleman in an unbuttoned raincoat, holding his dark hat tightly with both hands.
– Mr. Thomas Olvey. Says it’s on a night break-in case,” the constable reported.
Morrison pointed to a chair for the guest and showed his readiness to listen attentively to him. However, he still rubbed his neck with a handkerchief for a long time, looked around the study, where, apart from a desk, several chairs and cabinets with papers, there was nothing remarkable, or he began to fiddle with the edge of a fresh newspaper sticking out of his raincoat pocket. In the end, the inspector could not stand it:
– So, what brings you to me?
– Our constable, Norridge, advised me to contact you. He said that the matter was incomprehensible, only Sir Howard Morrison could figure it out. So you…” Here Mr. Olvey smiled disarmingly. Catching his eye, which somewhat resembled a basset hound, the inspector barely suppressed a smile and assured that he would do his best.
– Thank you! It’s just that someone breaks into my house for the first time. I’m used to a quiet life, but here…
– Let’s go into more detail. Where do you live?
– I’m renting Elm Villa half a mile from Caperna. The place is wonderful, you can see the sea through the pines, it is so calming… The house is not very big, but it has two floors. On the first floor there is a living room, a kitchen and the rooms of my servants.
Who are they? Morrison was making quick notes in his notebook.
– This is the couple Douglas, Michael and Emma, they have been with me for more than twenty years, they run the whole household. Yes, and on the second floor there is my bedroom and something like a large library, where everything happened. I brought several paintings with me, and this morning I found one of them on the floor with a broken frame. Someone broke into the house at night and did all this, but why?
– How did you get in?
– This is incomprehensible. Doors and windows were locked.
– Hmm… Are any of your items missing? Or maybe also damaged?
– No. I checked the papers just in case, but they are all there. Other things too.
– Curious. And you didn’t hear anything?
Absolutely nothing. But I don’t sleep very well. The servants, too, could not say anything to Mr. Norridge.
– Could it have happened that the painting just fell and the frame broke? Or that it didn’t happen at night, but, say, yesterday afternoon, when you once again went for a walk?
Olvi stared at the inspector in surprise:
– I really do take long walks every day, on the advice of my doctor… How did you find out about this?
– So, little things. For example, your tan, which is not under the hat. And the fact that you let the cab go before you got to the police station, although you didn’t know exactly where it was, also speaks of a habit of walking. You didn’t walk from Caperna, did you?
– Of course not, that would be too much for me! Yesterday I wandered along the seashore, at this time it was really possible to climb into the house, but in the evening I read until late in the library, and the picture hung in place. And she couldn’t fall like that herself. In the morning I found it near the window, but it hangs over the fireplace…
Morrison tapped his pencil thoughtfully on his notebook.
– Mr Olvey, tomorrow morning I need to inspect your house. I hope nothing has been touched there since last night?
– Of course not! Mr Norridge gave orders at once.
– Well, see you tomorrow.
As the clumsy gentleman disappeared through the door, the inspector stepped out onto the balcony and watched Mr. Thomas Olvee hastily disappear into one of the side alleys. Then he went down to the first floor and went up to the duty officer:
– Now a man came out from me… Did he ask you anything?
Asked, sir. Where can you find a driver as soon as possible? I said that there were a lot of them in Tulip Square and told where she was.
– Excellent, thank you.
Morrison went upstairs and looked at the notes in his notebook again. So, a case that does not seem to exist, since it is not clear whether there was a crime, but still curious. Locked house. A painting for which Alvey paid, he said, twenty pounds. Obviously not a masterpiece. So who and why needed to break the frame? The first version is that the attacker took out some hidden object or paper from under it… But how he got into the house and how he left it will be clear tomorrow. In the meantime, only one strange moment remained to be clarified.
Leaving the office, Morrison took a leisurely look around. To get to Tulip Square, Olvi had to walk a little up the street and turn right at the bakery. And he went the other way. Morrison straightened his hat with a habitual gesture and moved into the alley where the triangular figure of his strange guest had disappeared. With such instructions given by the duty officer, it was impossible to make a mistake. Even the man who asked the workers for directions to the police department – a building that the whole city knew. Either Mr. Alvey is completely out of his mind, or he knows the streets of Lissa better than he seems.
Morrison walked leisurely down the alley to the Zweig brothers’ large store – but Olvi, judging by his suit, was hardly interested in clothes. In several zucchini, of course, it was not there either. So, on this route, he was interested either in a private house, or …
– Good evening, John! How are you?
– Excellent, Inspector! The tall guy at the desk smiled sincerely. – Today they sent stamps, but you already have them.
– That’s not why I’m here. Tell me, hasn’t such a strange gentleman come to you – clumsy, as if his butt is five times wider than his head?
– Oh, you mean that! John laughed. Yes, it was just recently. He sent a telegram to the capital. Here she is.
Morrison stared in surprise at the form held out by the postal clerk. “Is that Looney? Telegraph soon! Olvi.”
II
After leaving the post office, the inspector looked to the left – where, according to John, the strange gentleman went. The street went, as you might guess, straight to Tulip Square.
– You know the city quite well, Mr. Alvey. Quite good.
Morrison caught himself thinking that for the first time in his career, he was tracking not a suspect, but a victim. But in the strange case and the course of the investigation, nothing prevented it from being strange. What if Mr. Olvey himself staged a break-in into his house? Although for this it would be better to leave the windows open … In a word, there were still too many questions left.
The answer to one of them was found at the police department, where Morrison returned for a couple of minutes.
– Sorry… Yes, he asked about the mail. Somehow I didn’t remember right away…
– You work for the police, Warham. In li-qi-yi,” Morrison said the last word syllable by syllable, watching the young officer’s face turn pale. “At work, every little thing can matter. Remember the trial of Peters? Because of one burnt match, a person could be sent to the gallows. Just one match, Warham! If you do not develop memory and attention, it is better to look for another job.
So, not all suspicions about the strange Mr Olvey were justified. But the telegram was still interesting. While studying at the metropolitan academy, Morrison heard something about a gentleman named Kevin Dark, to whom the telegram was addressed. In several criminal cases, he was an expert who helped determine the authenticity of paintings. Everything is clear here both with the text of the telegram and with the interest of the art lover Olvi. But who is Luni?
The clock showed a quarter past seven, and there was no point in calling the city library. But fate turned out to be favorable to Morrison that evening: the director of the library, Sir David Banks, met the inspector right on the street.
– I never cease to be glad that our city is not very big. It’s so easy to find the right person here!
– Oh, Inspector, do you need me again for some reason?!
– Always, my friend. At least in order to communicate with a smart interlocutor.
Mr. Banks bowed with a smile, and then gestured broadly towards the terrace of the restaurant where they met:
– Shall we have dinner?
After placing his order, Morrison looked down for a while at the red rooftops descending in steps and the sea shimmering in the rays of the setting sun in all shades of red, pink and purple.
– It’s good that you can see the sea from here.
– Inspector, you can see him from everywhere! That is why so many people are tired of it.
– Can it get boring?
Banks looked closely at Morrison:
– I sometimes wonder that you remain such a hopeless romantic with your work. But then I remember that you were born far from the sea, for you this is a kind of miracle… Besides, you are one of the few who can now boast that they personally met That Woman…
– Yes, she loved the sea very much. And this city. She talked about him in such a way that for me he became a dream.
– And here I am in charge of the library founded by her husband, and I have never seen either one or the other.
– This is more a praise of your youth than a cause for grief.
– Probably yes, my friend. Yes, so what was your dream city asking you for a riddle? Why were you looking for me?
– I need to know who Looney is.
Banks raised an eyebrow in surprise, which made his beautiful plump face suddenly look not at all surprised, but some kind of sly look.
– That’s how… I myself have just learned from a letter from a university friend about an artist with that last name, and you are already running some business where he appears…
– Mentioned only.
– Okay, tell me the details later, if you see fit. So, Looney is the sensation of the last metropolitan auction. For his landscape, an unknown buyer laid out fifty-nine thousand. And this despite the fact that absolutely nothing is known about the artist himself. Rumor has it that he ended up in prison in his youth, and disappeared there – or something like that, so few paintings remain of him. But these are just rumors. His canvases, as far as I can judge, are mediocre. No one understands why it was necessary to pay such big money for this landscape.
– Ah, that’s why Mr. Collector got excited! David, do you have any material on this Looney’s paintings – newspaper clippings about the auction, maybe reproductions?
– Haven’t seen reproductions yet. In my opinion, the news about that landscape with cows was in the latest issue of the Sea Herald. I will find it for you. But I won’t promise anything more yet – at least until the capital’s reporters unearth more about our mysterious painter.
The sun had almost set when Morrison returned home. Standing near the open window, he looked at the sea. What did that frail old woman with the eyes of a child say then? “The merchant sells fish every day and never sees that there are rainbows on its scales. You can live in the port all your life – and see only gray sails. But if you see something different just once, that will make you happy. Forever”.
III
Before leaving for Elm Villa, Morrison sent several requests to the Ministry from the official telegraph office, and then went downstairs to hurry with the crew. It was here that Banks, somewhat out of breath, found him.
– Here, Inspector! This is yesterday’s issue of Fresh Wind.
Morrison carefully read the news about the auction, where the painting of the unknown Looney was purchased by an equally mysterious, but obviously wealthy admirer. The note itself did not add anything new to yesterday’s conversation – the photo was more important, in which one could see the landscape. There was absolutely nothing sensational about it: a square painting in a realistic style depicted a meadow with several grazing cows, a house was visible in the background, and that was it.
– Some strange composition, don’t you think? Well, would you pay fifty-nine thousand for this? Banks asked, barely holding back his laughter.
– I’m more interested in who did it anyway. Thanks David!
Constable Norridge was waiting outside his station.
– Difficult night? Morrison asked, looking at his subordinate.
– That’s right, sir. The sailors started a fight in Dick’s Tavern, the owner called me after midnight. One of ours, the Capernians, was stabbed with a knife, but got off lightly. The culprit is drunk, sleeping under my lock. He is from a Brazilian ship, in the evening I will take him to Liss, commandant. The rest is given.
– Understood. What about Mr Olvey?
– A complicated matter…
– No, about him himself – what kind of person?
– Ah, this is . .. Quiet, ill with something. He walks along the shore all the time – he says the doctor ordered so. I often see him somewhere on a pebble by the sea. Came to us in March. Servants – old men, housekeeper and butler, husband and wife. They have a house, a villa, which means it stands apart – it’s over there. There are several more houses nearby, all of them are ours, old ones. Olvi is well spoken about.
– What exactly?
– Well, he doesn’t drink there, quiet.
– That’s great. Okay, let’s go.
As Morrison had expected, there were no elms around Elm Villa. A neat two-story house was surrounded by lilac bushes, and pine trees stood at a distance, between which, as Olvi had said, the sea was blue.
“Nicely settled down,” the inspector remarked and began to examine the tracks on the ground. The constable walked two steps behind and showed his readiness to help in case of need. Walking around the house, Morrison thought for a minute, and then knocked on the door.
A short elderly man in a brown frock coat opened the door for the guests.
– Hello, Douglas! Home owner?
“Yes, constable, he is waiting for you and…” the butler looked at the civil inspector in confusion.
“Inspector Morrison,” he introduced himself, showing his personal badge.
– Please, please …
Douglas went inside the house, the constable followed him, and Morrison brought up the rear, carefully examining all the premises along the way.
– Douglas, is the door usually unlocked during the day?
– Yes, sir. Nobody walks here except us.
– And the owner of the villa?
– He lives somewhere on the other side of Liss, his attorney comes for a fee once a month, on the third day.
– And now the twentieth …
– That’s right.
– That is, if desired, a stranger can still enter the house without being seen?
– Hardly. Emma’s kitchen is my wife – right opposite the entrance, she always hears when the door slams and looks out to see what and how.
– But can you open the door quietly?
– This one is unlikely, you yourself heard how it creaks.
– What about the back door?
– She is always on the bolt. We never opened it, no reason. Now, if they themselves planted some kind of garden, there would be a need, otherwise … – the butler waved his hand vaguely.
Morrison had time to inspect the back door from the outside and really made sure that it had time to overgrow with bushes so that it simply would not open.
– And the windows?
– We seldom open them downstairs, but Mr. Olvey often keeps them open in his study or bedroom. But at night I lock everything up.
Having gone up to the second floor, the guests found themselves in a small corridor. One of the two doors was open, and the clumsy Mr. Olvey was standing in the doorway.
– This way, gentlemen. This is where the story happened…
In the library, as Olvi called this room, there really were a lot of books. And between the cabinets, pictures hung rather densely. Morrison stopped near one of them and grunted.
– Banksy, original?
– Yes, this is one of those pictures that I brought with me, – Olvi smiled. – Are you also interested in painting?
– Not much. Were you not afraid to take such a canvas from home?
– Rather, I was afraid to leave unattended. After all, we left our house completely empty, there is not even a watchman there. And all because of my health. I need sea air and walks… However, you know that. So I took my small collection with me. It is not known when we will return…
A picture with a broken frame was lying near the window. Morrison measured the distance from this place to the fireplace, over which he could see an empty nail.
– Is that how she lay?
– That’s right. Mr. Norridge and I didn’t touch anything.
Morrison bent over the painting, face down. Judging by the chips and marks in the upper corners of the frame, someone broke it with an ax or other similar tool. The ax was used as a lever, so this could be done without much noise. The most interesting thing is that part of the frame was completely torn off only on the right side. In three others, small nails connecting the frame to the subframe remained in place.
– Have you checked your fingerprints?
– That’s right, sir. Nothing. Most likely gloves.
Morrison nodded and turned the canvas over. The gaze of the gentlemen gathered in the room opened up a green meadow with cows.
After carefully examining the painting from all sides, Morrison turned to Olvi.
– Who is the author of this landscape? I didn’t find the signature.
– He is unknown. I bought it shortly before leaving from an agent I know who sells art objects – I just liked the color and in general …
– But you guess who painted this painting?
– No. If the author were more or less known, I would never buy a painting for the money I gave.
– Lying, Mr Olvey, is not the best way to get along with justice.
What?!
Morrison defiantly pulled out yesterday’s newspaper from his pocket.
– When you were sitting in my office, you had exactly the same one.
Olvi even clattered his teeth in excitement and grabbed his throat.
– Yes, that’s right… Okay, I’ll be honest. I let the cabby go to the corner where the newspapers were sold. And it must be that this particular page was opened on the tray,” Olvi pointed at the photo from the auction. – I immediately wanted to send a telegram to my agent so that he could find out – what if my painting is also worth that kind of money? But I was afraid that then I would not find you there – the time was already late …
– And we went to the post office after we went to the police.
– Right.
– Did your agent confirm it was Looney? Morrison pointed to a painting leaning against the wall.
– Not yet. I think he is not himself that he sold it to me so cheaply! Olvi laughed shortly. “I rarely give more than fifty pounds for a painting. Means, you know… Everything that is more valuable, I inherited from my relatives. The same Banksy…
Morrison looked thoughtfully at the picture, from time to time shifting his gaze to the newspaper photo.
– Constable, look too. Doesn’t it seem to you?
Norridge stared at the photo for a minute.
– If you’ll excuse me, sir… The author seems to be the same. I only drew a house in the photograph, but didn’t want to in the picture of Mr. Alvey.
– Yeah, and signed only one of the two, – Morrison pointed at the curl, visible in the photo in the lower corner of the canvas.
– Wait a minute! – Norridge snatched the newspaper from the inspector’s hands and began to push it away, then bring it to his eyes, combining it with the picture in the room. – Yes, this is one drawing, only for some reason it was cut in half.
– What, what, excuse me? – Olvi tried to look out from behind the backs of the policemen in order to better see what they saw. Morrison paid no attention to him.
– Just about. This painting is the left side, the right side was sold at the auction. Now we have to find out who needed to do something with the left half. And how…
Morrison thought about it.
– Mr Olvey, does the house have an attic?
– Of course. But it is always closed.
– Show me where the entrance is.
Olvi went out into the corridor and pointed to the ceiling:
– There is some kind of hatch, but no stairs, nothing…
– Ask for a ladder.
Douglas brought the stepladder only a quarter of an hour later – it was not in the house, he had to take it in a neighboring house.
Morrison climbed up to the hatch itself and examined it.
– Well, here are the traces. The dust has been removed. Someone climbed there – or got out of there.
The hatch moved easily and silently. Throwing it back, Morrison climbed into the attic, and a few seconds later Norridge was there.
– Excellent, Constable. The hinges have been recently oiled – look, there are traces of oil. So what’s around?
There were some boxes and boxes in the corners, so dusty that one could be sure that no one had touched them for many years. Moving on, Morrison grunted with satisfaction:
– Here she is, Norridge.
In a depression between the beams there was a wooden staircase, along which the intruder descended from the attic to the library. She, too, was almost completely covered in dust, but in several places handprints were clearly visible, and on the steps there were footprints of boots.
“That’s right, he was wearing gloves,” said the constable.
– A got out through the only window. Morrison pushed the frame and the window swung open. – There is a latch, but with fresh scratches – it was most likely opened with a knife. So, how did he get down?
The attic window faced the end wall. Below, in front of the windows of the living room, there was a path paved with stone, and directly above Morrison’s head, an iron hook protruded from the wall.
– What do you think, Norridge?
– It’s clear: I threw some rope here, got up, opened the window with a knife – and he was inside.
– That is, how do you see our intruder?
– Yes, some kind of acrobat … I could not do that! Hold on to the rope, and break open the window at that time…
– That’s it. So it was the second one.
– Second? Why?
– It’s just easier. There are no pieces of rope on the hook, which means that it was easy to remove it. Most likely, they threw a big loop. One holds the end of the rope, and the second, tied to the other end, opens a window on the sheer wall. If the attic window were located differently and it was possible to open it while sitting on the roof, like on that house over there, one could do it alone. Now go downstairs and see if there are any traces of this second one.
While Norridge was inspecting the ground in front of the house, Morrison once again walked up the attic, put his gloved hand to the prints on the stairs – they were slightly smaller, and then went down to Mr. Alvey. He watched as Douglas put the painting on the windowsill and tidied up the floor, on which there were small chips.
“We need to order a new frame,” Olvi sighed. “But if it’s really Looney, it’s worth it.” Okay, at least it wasn’t stolen.
– By the way, a good question: why wasn’t it stolen?
Olvi just shrugged and looked at Morrison with his Basset Hound eyes.

Over a brunch the next day—very late, to tell the truth, for Galen slept until noon—they continued this conversation.
“You can leave her here,” Esther said. – When else will my sons reward me with grandchildren! Otherwise, where will you go with the baby – you don’t only have to feed her, you need to educate her, you can’t trust servants like that …
– Yes, I myself would stay, – Theodore quickly looked at her. “Do you know how hard it is to buy a house in Trogartein?”
“If you have money, nothing is difficult,” the duchess smiled. “What, are you tired of Orignan?” The climate is better there.
– Not really tired… But I have friends here. Somehow it didn’t work out there, yes, to tell the truth, it didn’t work out anywhere …
You’re the only one who puts up with me, and that’s thanks to Tony. So the climate in Orignan is indeed better, but somehow warmer here…
He looked askance at the duchess and smiled in response to her smile
– You know, Theodore… you have a terrible character. I think you are a very nice person. I regretted that Basingham was far away from here – I so wanted to see how he would see his child for the first time. You comforted me. Especially the girl. Father and daughter are especially touching, and this dragon slayer will surely have a son, whom he will flog with rods from the age of six. I’ll find a house for you, I promise. I even have one in mind, it just corresponds to the title and merit … Do not look at me so fiercely, it’s your own fault – they left so quickly, and did not say where. You played an important role in the fate of Trogarmark, didn’t you? But when our lords thought about a worthy reward, they had a hard time. It’s not money to pay you, as a mercenary, in fact … Orders have not been placed on your chest for a long time, you won’t give a rank either, since you are not in the Trogar service. So put on your dog the baronial crown. The king granted you lands on the border with Orignan, you can manage them from the Rondo valley.
Theodore was silent for a good half minute, his hand on his throat.
– Did Tony try hard? Finally, he asked stifledly.
– I assume he knows what’s important to you? – as if not noticing his excitement, the duchess asked. “You are friends, aren’t you?” Though you acted and not in a friendly way, going alone to deal with a common enemy. Well, what are you, Theodore, I was joking … We do not live in a chivalric romance, so that the next day after the wedding we go to war – although, it seems to me, you are just from a romance. By the way, as far as I know Ethel’s habits, now she should wake up. Would you like to visit her?
Galen seemed to want to say something, but didn’t say anything. Instead, he got up and, dropping to one knee, like a queen, kissed the hand of Esther Norridge …
