Most La Liga clubs have been investing heavily over the years to increase the capacity of their football training facilities and reduce purchasing costs – a model Athletic Bilbao has always supported. It may not have helped it win titles over the past three decades, but it certainly has allowed it to establish itself as one of the most important Spanish football teams and to make major investments, such as the construction of a new stadium. And importantly, it didn’t affect the business – with a fifth of its income, the club managed to earn almost as much money as Real Madrid and Barca earned over the past three seasons.
Unlike many of their competitors, while the club is similarly doubling its income from television (up to €71 million compared to the last individually awarded contract), Athletic Bilbao sees little threat in this new cycle in distribution models. He worries that teams that have so far failed to catch the big fish will now do so, destroying a strategy that has worked great in recent years: retaining talent by gradually improving conditions, until the moment when an offer appears, from which impossible to refuse, as in the case of Javi Martinez and Bayern.
One evidence for the correctness of this model is the low level of depreciation costs, which can later lead to profit, accounting for all accounting transactions related to the San Mames stadium, and the expected improvement in overall income in this sector. “In 2011 net worth was negative at €4 million and by the end of this season it will be €105 million; we have achieved this without the structural deficit that has been talked about so much,” Alberto Uribe-Echevarría, member of the board of directors responsible for the economic sector, said at the last meeting.
In the medium term, the stadium should become a source of additional income compared to today, especially with the installation of a VIP area at San Mamés. The stadium’s new corporate space will consist of 44 stands and 2,352 premium seats, to which two restaurants and an official store can be added. In total, its area covers 6,000 square meters, which can bring up to €8 million per year if it works at full capacity.
This would be one of the growth levers that would justify the €43m (€18m through land contributions) that the club spent to build the infrastructure, for which it would also pay an annual rent of €500k from 2013 to 2063, as a result of which he will be able to exercise a call option of €66 million. Added to this figure is another €12.6 million from the club’s roof extension budget.
The club recognizes that this new line of business avoids a situation where the profitability of one of the four “social clubs” that still remain in the elite depends on whether the ball enters the goal or not. In addition, unlike what happens in other La Liga teams, Athletic have important commercial connections ready to work together to help compete for titles.
In addition, the VIP area is of particular importance for the existence of all local businesses. This support is also shown at the level of sponsorship. For example, participation in financing the construction of the new San Mames stadium. Since the 2015/16 season, the sponsor’s name has appeared on the chest of the jerseys. We are talking about an asset that over the past seven years came from another regional company, Petronor, with which Kutxabank entered into an agreement for a year.
Among its four main sponsors is the Institute Mèdico Quirurgico (“IMQ”) clinic chain, along with the San Miguel brewery, with which the club has renewed its partnership until 2018, and of course Nike, which remains a technical partner for at least this season.
They are followed by a list of important suppliers and partners, many of whom are of Basque origin. Some of them have joined quite recently, such as the Kirolbet bookmaker or the Euskaltel telecommunications group. However, the economic contribution that the club receives in total is not very high, as the budget is shared between all the teams in the Basque Country that are in the elite. Kutxabank is in a similar situation, which, in addition to financing the construction, is entitled to €2 million in San Mames assets as advertising or entrance tickets.
The club overcomes the problems with some of its main rivals in the middle of the rankings with the help of a key element of the football club: the fans. Athletic is the third team in terms of membership and supporter receipts, surpassing even Atlético Madrid, although the average attendance at Vicente Calderón is higher. In addition, the business of its stores brings in more than €6 million per season.
There are few clubs that have taken the risk of retaining talent. It is about how the level of football preparation of the team can be affected by the fact that Eibar are already entrenched in the first division, and can move forward with their training model, as they have already begun to do with some clubs in their zone of influence.
Athletic had about 212 employees at the end of the 2014/15 season, of which about 90 were office workers led by Jon Berasategui.
Revenues (Turnover – total revenue minus operating income)
According to the auditors this year, the club came in fourth in terms of regular bill payments, which means that the club’s main activity has little or no connection with transfers . Television broadcasts and, most importantly, wide support of fans became the main sources of income. The move to the new San Mamés stadium has improved season ticket and membership sales at a time when many other clubs have found it difficult to do so. In addition, the club received €10 million from promotional activities and profits from the sale of related products.
Publicidad y comercial – Advertising
Television – Television
Abonados y socios – Subscriptions and membership
Competicion – Competition/match income
Otros ingresos de explotacion – Operating income
Cifra de negocio — Turnover
Debt (Amount of debt less deferred tax, debits and cash)
Over the past four seasons, the club has not only managed to complete the construction of the stadium, but also to minimize all of its debt obligations. The funds received for the improvement of the sports ground have already been paid to creditors, and the new debt obligations are small – the funds will go only to sign Raul Garcia from Atlético Madrid. In fact, according to the La Liga criteria, the club is a “negative payer”, which means that its debt obligations to other clubs are less than the debts of other clubs to the team itself, which contrasts with the financial performance in the 2011/12 season, when the club’s debt obligations were €60. 9million.
Banca – Bank
Administracion publica – Public organizations
Clubes – Clubs
900 11 Otros pasivos — Other
Deuda neta — Total debt
Costs (personnel and player costs)
The business model of having all player training based in the small municipality of Lesama has allowed Athletic to reduce depreciation costs, amounting to almost €10 million in savings per year. Personnel costs have also changed a lot due to a poor season in which the team did not play a single match in the European arena. The team finished sixth in terms of relative salary costs, which was caused by the club’s reluctance to part ways with some of the team’s main players, such as Aymeric Laporte or Inaki Williams, for example.
Aprovisionamientos – Purchases
Gastos de personal – Personnel expenses
Otros gastos de explotacion – Operating income
Amortizacion de inmovilizado – Depreciation of immovable property Results
The Board of Directors, headed by Josu Urrutia, is satisfied with the financial position of the club, because it is known that the new cycle of media contracts is able to support the chosen business model, which does not rely on player transfers. This is something that has not yet been applied in 2014/15 when these operations contributed only €0.8m of revenue out of a total profit of €30.8m. And thanks to the funding model chosen for the construction work at the San Mames stadium, this operation does not create financial costs for the club, while many other clubs are weighed down by this.
Plusvalias por transpasos – Income from transfers
Otros resultados/Subvenciones – Other/Subsidies
Resultatos de explot acion – Income from operations
Costes Financieros – Financial costs

La Liga 2022/23 Symbolic Starter Team
Blogger Jamón Ibérico shares his vision who deserves to be among the best players Examples based on the results of the starting 6 rounds of the new season
It’s not interesting to collect a symbolic team just like that. We need rules and restrictions. In our case, they will be as follows:
1. You cannot take more than two people from one club.
2. Play balance and player compatibility must be considered.
These two points in total already guarantee that it will not be the top 11. Therefore, do not be surprised at the absence of some surnames and the presence of others. No, this is exactly what the “symbolic team”. In short, 4-3-3 and let’s go!
Goalkeeper – Jeremias Ledesma (Cádiz)
There are more important things than football. Frames where the Argentine goalkeeper runs across the entire field to pass a defibrillator to the stands have spread all over the world. Jeremias, no matter where your team goes, you are the pride of La Liga!
Román Ríos (EFE)
Left back – Reinildo Mandava (Atletico Madrid)
Vinicius will be the winger on this flank, which means an attacking full-back not needed here. Reinildo is definitely not about the attack. Strictly speaking, it’s not even quite about football. Again, there are a lot of questions for the defense of Atlético, but somehow I don’t want to ask this guy, he’s too harsh. Hence, another plus – Vinicius will be beaten less. Yourself is more expensive.
Left centre-back – David Alaba (Real Madrid)
It’s simple: Alaba is by far the best defender in the world. That’s exactly the wording. If you specify the position, then he is not the best left-back and not the best central (although he will be in the top both there and there). And if it’s just “the best defender”, then this is, of course, David. At Real Madrid, he plays mostly in the center, so we will put him there too.
Right central defender – Raul Albiol (Villarreal)
Alaba has a fantastic set of skills. But if you still find fault, then we can say that the game on the second floor is not his forte. Therefore, we send Albiol together with him. The veteran is still among the best in this component. In addition, Villarreal started the season well and did not concede at all until the fifth round.
Reuters
Right back – Oscar De Marcos (Athletic Bilbao)
The hardest choice. On the one hand, it is impossible to rush forward headlong. Albiol is not young, and it will be difficult for him to constantly insure this area. On the other hand, we will give the right winger some freedom of maneuver. This means that some activity is needed, otherwise the flank in the attack will sag. Here you need an absolutely average player. Average to the teeth grinding. Average, but high quality. In other words, we need someone from Bilbao. The Basques started excellently, so the choice here is fully justified.
Defensive midfielder – William Carvalho (Betis)
Betis have won every match the Portuguese has played this season. Yes, this is a bit of a slyness, because the very one match that William missed was at the Bernabeu. However, the fact remains: Carvalho is irreplaceable. And it is not clear how one could even consider his departure. In La Liga today, only Busquets in this position has more game intelligence. It is very good for Betis that in the end they agreed and extended the contract. 9. And even then – not much. Therefore, this is the case when you can not even watch the matches, just one standings is enough. Barcelona high? So Pedri is fine. If it were not in order, it would be lower. Everything is very simple.
FC Barcelona
Right central midfielder – Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad)
If at Alaba we found something to complain about with difficulty, then in the situation with Merino it will be even more difficult. Mikel is a man-orchestra. Select, beat, give, score, win air – the player can do everything. Luis Enrique, for some reason, doesn’t like him much. We cannot afford such a luxury, although we have the right to choose not only the Spaniards.
Left winger – Rodrigo Goes (Real Madrid)
Cheap trick, yes. However, it is also a way to draw attention to the problem. Rodrigo is not even close to having the support in Real Madrid that his compatriot has. And it’s certainly not about the recent scandal. Vinicius was tolerated even when Benzema “asked me with his mother” not to give him the ball. They endured and continued to bet on his favorite position. And Rodrigo is still plugging holes. At the same time, according to the goal + pass system, he has only one point less this season.
Right winger – Lee Kang-in (Mallorca)
Here is the player whose hands we will untie a bit. The Korean can play on the flank, but initially it is still a ten. Mallorca needs to send fruits and sweets every week to the office of Valencia, which gave such a player for free. Fantastic left foot, killer set pieces. Lee Kang In scored once himself and assisted three times. In total, the islanders have six goals at the moment. Do you need to explain further?
Sport.es
Forward – Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona)
If the fight for the championship is still expected to be tough, then in the scorer race after six rounds “the daisies hid, the buttercups drooped.” Robert is only two goals away so far, but his iron stride leaves no chance for competitors. Benzema missed two games. Only two, but with such a competitor, it’s like missing a month. However, let’s see. Such a duel, no doubt, would be the decoration of the season.
Head coach – Manuel Pellegrini (Betis)
Carlo Ancelotti would have been the third from Real Madrid, which is against the rules. Fortunately for us, in La Liga there is his spiritual twin. He has noticeably less regalia, but he is just as experienced and judicious specialist. The ideal candidate. Moreover, he has lost only Ancelotti so far, everything else is only victory. We tried to strike a balance in the choice of composition.
