Inflation and price hikes continue to plague shoppers looking for bargains on large appliances. But rest assured: You can still find discounts during sale events on Memorial Day from Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and members-only warehouse stores like Costco. Our price research on Wirecutter’s large-appliance picks points to the best prices happening in October and November, but worthy sales at predictable junctures between now and then are highly likely to offer discounts that are nearly as good.

During tentpole sale events such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, you can expect gift card offers from Best Buy, special financing offers nearly everywhere, and the usual package savings deals from all retailers that involve buying multiple appliances and totally refitting your kitchen. Savings on dishwashers, fridges, ranges, and washer-and-dryer sets are all available at these times, and though you may not get the best possible price, matching what will be available nearer the end of the year, no one wants to wait that long to replace a subpar or broken appliance.

What is a rebate?

When you buy select appliances, a rebate is deducted from the total price of the item, leaving just a little more money in your bank account. But here’s the catch: Even though point-of-sale “instant” rebates exist, most rebate savings are applied retroactively, requiring you to send in a claim form via snail mail. It’s worth the trouble. Though large appliances go on sale at predictable junctures, they’re notorious for sales of middling quality throughout the rest of the year, so rebates can be a common way to save more-substantial amounts.

Brand rebates vs. government rebates

The most common rebates you’ll see either come direct from the manufacturer of a large appliance or are part of a federal rebate program. Brand rebates typically serve as an incentive for shoppers to buy in-store or online. The federal government, in contrast, allots rebates by household.

At the state level, energy providers may offer rebates on larger appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers. In New York State and Maryland, for example, energy-company rebates include programs from PSEG and PEPCO, respectively, but be sure to verify with the utilities in your region to determine whether they participate in such programs.

Tax credits plus incentives vs. rebates

Tax credits and incentives differ from rebates in two key ways: They’re issued at an annual cadence, and they’re based on income bracket. Since you typically do your taxes once a year, you have to remember to submit the required paperwork every April 15 (barring a national emergency). Presently, the Biden administration says that households can “access a tax credit to cover up to 30% of the costs for certain efficiency improvements” through the Inflation Reduction Act. In the absence of some new, game-changing technology (which is not common for large appliances), investing in the previous year’s model of any large appliance is a great way to save. A rule of thumb: Sales on last year’s models kick off when this year’s models roll out. Usually, new washers, dryers, and dishwashers debut in September and October, while new ovens and ranges drop around the top of the year. Folks who are itching for a spanking-new fridge should keep their eye out for sales in May. Don’t buy just one

You nearly always have the opportunity to save during sales by buying bundles of large appliances. When to buy small appliances

Prime Day and Black Friday

That means lower pricing than usual for you.

Meanwhile, warehouse clubs such as Costco offer good deals on appliances large and small. And if you’re interested in vacuums, Woot (an Amazon company) and eBay offer some of the better prices out there, particularly for our robot vacuum and robot mop picks, but we recommend checking to confirm whether the options available are either new or manufacturer refurbs with full warranties.

Periodic sales and price tracking

If you don’t want to wait for an appliance to go on sale at a certain time of year, you can always price-track the model of your choice using well-known and free tracking tools such as Camelcamelcamel and Keepa, which can help you make informed decisions when shopping. Camelcamelcamel and Keepa are better for keeping tabs on small appliances, as they monitor only Amazon prices; historically, Amazon hasn’t carried as many large appliances as brick-and-mortar competitors have, so these tools are unfortunately limited in their large-appliance price data.

Both companies say they won’t share users’ email addresses or other details with third parties, but we still suggest using a burner email address so that you have better control over any potential incoming spam. Also, be sure to stick with such services’ websites, rather than any browser extensions or mobile apps.
