The Best AT&T Flip Phones for Seniors to Use in 2023

Picking up cell phones for seniors can be tricky nowadays. Not every senior citizen is tech-savvy, so they may be unable to handle high-tech devices like touchscreens or smartphones.

In this case, it’s best to focus on basic phones with only the essential features. Fortunately, AT&T still carries flip phones for seniors!

I’ll cover some of my senior relatives’ favorite flip phones in depth here, so read on to find the best flip phone for your elderly loved one!

Does AT&T Have Flip Phones?

I was originally looking at Jitterbug phones, but unfortunately, AT&T phone plans aren’t compatible with Jitterbug.

If you want to avail yourself of Jitterbug phones or other cell phones designed for seniors, you’ll have to approach other phone carriers. I found that AT&T doesn’t carry phones designed with seniors in mind.

However, even though they don’t offer cellular phones with seniors in mind, AT&T does carry a few flip phones. They also offer support and manuals for multiple flip phone models.

You can also check other phone companies like Consumer Cellular for their devices like I ended up doing. Consumer Cellular also has AT&T-compatible cell phone plans.

Which Features Should Flip Phones for Seniors Have?

AT&T does not offer flip phones for seniors specifically. However, there are specific phone features that are senior-friendly that I learned to look out for.

1) A Large Keypad

Many senior citizens cannot handle using smartphones because of the lack of buttons, and sometimes, confusing interfaces.

Flip phones remove this problem by having large and clearly-labeled buttons in their design. As a physical feature, these buttons will remain easy for vision-impaired seniors.

2) Voice Commands

My elderly parents sometimes have trouble holding their phones for long periods. This issue meant I had to find them cell phones with voice commands and voice dialing!

A flip phone with voice commands will help any seniors use their phone despite any motion issues. Look for phones with a TTS or Text-to-Speech key for easier usage.

3) Hearing Aid-Compatible

Cell phones typically need to be used when held up to the ear. However, many seniors are hard of hearing and must get by with hearing aids.

Hearing aid-compatible phones will let your loved one enjoy crystal clear calls and reduce the chances of interference from their hearing aid.

4) Safety Features

Smartphones today can be both fragile and a potential source of viruses or fraud calls. Some very basic phones come without internet access, making this a non-concern.

Apart from online problems, your elderly family member may require a more rugged phone because of a tendency to drop objects.

I ran into this issue but handled it by getting a flip phone with a tough exterior.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Learn more about the different flip cell phones that AT&T carries here!

Does AT&T Have a Simple Phone for Seniors?

Some seniors only need simple flip phones that work as intended and are no-fuss. I believe the ideal device for this is the Kyocera DuraXE Epic.

This tough little flip phone features HD voice capability and is built to last a long time. It’s also got a long battery life and a removable battery, in case your loved one needs to upgrade.

To assist seniors who may have difficulties holding onto their cell phones, the Kyocera DuraXE Epic is drop-proof. It’s also waterproof AND dust-proof!

Does AT&T Offer a Senior-Friendly Smartphone?

If your elderly loved one can handle more than regular flip phones, then AT&T has senior-friendly smartphones too! They offer the 3rd-gen Apple iPhone SE, the latest on the market.

The Apple iPhone SE is a neat and compact device, despite being a touchscreen. This phone can be utilized without ever touching it, thanks to the voice commands in its virtual assistant!

Seniors who aren’t afraid to move into the world of touchscreens will be able to make full use of Siri to surf the web. This device is also 5G capable, so your loved one can enjoy blazing-fast speeds.

I recommend the iPhone SE because of its large and intuitively-designed screen. It’s also hearing-aid compatible!

SAVINGS TIP: If your loved one is short on cash but still wants an iPhone, they can trade in their old cell phone for a chance at a discount.

Does AT&T Offer the New Flip Phone?

Nowadays, the definition of a “flip phone” has changed somewhat. While the standard 2-piece phones are still being made for seniors, Samsung has developed a touch screen flip phone.

AT&T currently carries the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G, which is a mouthful of a name. This cellular phone is a flip phone that doubles as a touch screen, thanks to Samsung’s new glass technology.

Tech-savvy senior citizens may enjoy this device. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G retains the style of a traditional flip phone, meaning it has a small profile when kept folded.

However, it can be used similarly to a 2-in-1 laptop when unfolded. Note that this phone has a hefty monthly price, so ensure that you or your loved one can afford it if they decide to avail of this offer.

Does AT&T Have a Special Plan/Discount for Seniors?

Unfortunately, AT&T no longer offers senior discounts for their cell phones, but they do offer discounts for their cell phone plans.

Until recently, AT&T offered a Senior Nation plan that featured calls for senior citizens, which has since been discontinued. Your senior loved ones can avail of AT&T’s Unlimited 55+ plan instead.

Their Unlimited 55+ plan can support multiple lines simultaneously. Plus, only the account holder needs to be a senior citizen! However, I was disappointed to learn that this plan is only offered in Florida.

AT&T gives bonuses on their unlimited plans for users with multiple lines, so your loved one can save money on their cell phone bill. They can also sign up for paperless billing for more discounts!

Are There Any Other Senior Discounts?

Apart from these discounts, AARP members can get a 10% discount on their plan. AARP members can avail of this discount with proof of membership at the nearest AT&T retail store.

Senior veterans can also get a 25% discount on their monthly bill.

Which Cell Phone Is Easiest to Use for Seniors?

A flip cell phone is ideal for seniors since its layout is plain and simple.

Unlike smartphones which can be confusing to navigate due to their many menus, a flip phone has all the buttons your elderly loved one will need right on its large keypad.

For simplicity and ease of use, I recommend the Cingular Flip IV. The buttons on this flip phone have a large and easy-to-read font complemented by the large keypad.

Plus, as a bonus, the Cingular Flip IV can be paired with one of AT&T’s Unlimited talk plans so that your family will have an easier time keeping in touch.

Conclusion

Despite the prevalence of smartphones and touchscreen devices these days, you and your elderly family members still have many choices regarding senior-friendly phones.

When looking for flip phones for seniors, remember to speak with your loved ones and ask them which features they need. It’s important to get their input on this!

The best flip phone I’ve discussed is the Cingular Flip IV, thanks to its approachable price, strong battery, and hearing aid compatibility.

Best Cheap Phone Plans for July 2023: Alternatives to AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

As prices for goods remain high, looking for more ways to save has continued to be a big focus for people across the country. Cutting expensive subscriptions and resisting the temptation to eat out are a couple of ways to lower your costs, but there are a few things you can’t compromise on, like cellphone plans. Luckily, you don’t need to get rid of your service — you only need to find a cheaper phone plan.

In 2023, there are plenty of ways to do just that, from prepaid carriers such as Mint Mobile to cable companies’ mobile endeavors like Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile and Charter’s Spectrum Mobile. All of them could be more affordable than an unlimited plan from AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. Cheap phone plans now also have many of the features traditional plans offer, including an unlimited option, and they often run on a larger carrier’s network.

Though there are dozens of phone plan options out there, I’ve listed a few for you to consider, as well as some other ways to save on your bill. This market can quickly get unwieldy, so as with some of CNET’s other wireless carrier coverage, I’ll focus on options for a single line and for those looking for four lines.

Know your area and which carrier runs on which networks

To get the best deal, you need to make sure you have the coverage that you need. Cutting costs won’t help if it means the service won’t work for you.

The US’ complex geographic variables make it hard for us to give a blanket recommendation of any one carrier. T-Mobile’s service in New York may be excellent, but if you’re in rural Iowa, Verizon could be more reliable.

While your mileage may vary, the good news is that these networks are growing and improving all the time, particularly as the three major players continue the race to blanket the US with 5G. It’s quite possible that, a decade ago, you left a network complaining about its sparse service, but now it’s been beefed up because of that race to acquire customers.

If you know any friends or family in your area that already use the carrier you’re considering, ask about their experience. You could also go to a carrier’s store and see if they offer any free ways to try out the service before switching over, such as T-Mobile’s Network Pass. Verizon now offers a similar 30-day “Test Drive” program, while the Cricket prepaid service has its own trial program that lets you sample parent AT&T’s network.

When it comes to prepaid carriers and mobile options from cable companies you should also check to see which network they are using. Mint Mobile, for instance, runs on T-Mobile’s service (and will soon be acquired by T-Mobile), while Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile and Charter’s Spectrum Mobile use Verizon. In these cases, downloading either of the two apps above could be a quick and easy way to try out T-Mobile or Verizon’s coverage in your area before you switch.

We have a list of a few of the major alternative providers and which networks they run on broken down here. Now, onto the picks.

AT&T Cordless Telephones and Handsets

For your in-home landline, a cordless phone and handset is an effective way to access the features that your phone can offer. AT&T cordless telephones and handsets allow you to take advantage of a wide range of features, including an answering system, caller ID, and three-way calling. AT&T produces a wide range of cordless phones like the 5-handset or 4-handset cordless phones.

How do cordless phones work?

Most modern cordless phones operate using the same basic principle. You purchase a cordless phone that includes a base station that has to plug directly into the phone jack. This base station often includes an answering system. The base forms the basis of the entire phone system. You can then purchase additional cordless handsets that may be included with the package and just need to be plugged into the wall. They can then also receive the signal from the base station. If equipped with DECT 6.0 technology, your system may be able to handle up to 10 individual handsets. This allows you to have phones available in rooms with no phone jack.

What features do cordless handset packages include?

  • Answering system : The majority of cordless telephones include a digital answering system in the base station. Newer telephones have digital voice recording, so you can skip between messages and delete messages individually without having to listen to all of them.
  • Caller ID : If it is included in your telephone service, incoming calls will display Caller ID, identifying the person who has called you. Some telephones include Caller ID announce technology, so you can know who is calling without having to walk up to the phone.
  • Push-to-talk : Many cordless phone systems include a push-to-talk feature, which allows you to use the phone like a walkie-talkie and communicate with others in your house without having to make a telephone call or set up a dedicated line for each handset.
  • HD audio : AT&T cordless phones often include HD audio, which allows you to hear crystal clear sound and provides a variety of customization options, including the ability to adjust treble and bass.
  • Speakerphone : Most phone systems include a speakerphone component. Depending on the phone system, the speakerphone could be located at the phone system base or on the handset itself.
  • Call waiting : If your telephone service allows for it, these phone systems are compatible with call waiting.
  • Conference calling : These systems also include the ability to have a conference call with three parties.

AT&T Begins Rollout of Revolutionary 5G Technology

AT&T has just announced that it will start using DSS or Dynamic Common Phantom. This technology allows customers to use the same channel for 4G and 5G “actively” or simultaneously.

AT&T Senior Vice President Igal Elbaz said the technology will be used for the first time “in parts of our network in North Texas.

The publication was called shortly before what Yigal Elbaz quoted last month. The executive mentioned that the company will introduce DSS technology in the second half of 2020.

What is DSS?

AT&T will use DSS as a means of delivering 5G services to its customers.

Due to limited availability in the US of an empty 5G mid-range radio phantom, US mobile smart service providers have decided to use a dynamic shared phantom, or DSS. This is the main alternative that allows carriers to split their current 4G phantom into 4G or 5G segments.

AT&T is known as one of the largest cell phone carriers in the US. But promoting your 5G network proved to be much more difficult than the rest. The telecoms giant is late in the war for 5G dominance after shifting its previous victims to carriers. Carriers interested in using AT&T’s 5G had to choose between using high-speed 5G entry points or much slower 5G phones. In addition, these options have limited service availability for narrow geographic areas.

Using DSS, AT&T can now enable users to see 5G performance much closer to its competitors’ mid-range network. This can be achieved by spreading the 4G radio ghost between much lower and much higher bandwidth situations. Although actual speeds will still depend on the proportion of 4G and 5G customers accessing a DSS matching tower at any given time.

The big leap to 5G coverage

As technology advances, the share of 5G subscribers will continue to grow.

As events unfold, telcos may see more customers moving from 4G to 5G in the near future. While AT&T’s technology still has its limitations compared to others, it’s a huge step forward in terms of communications. This means a faster, stronger and more reliable means of communication with the planet.

While many see 5G as an optimization, there are still those who see 5G as a threat. With the advent of such technologies, many have come to believe in the conspiracy theories that the Internet is causing innumerable aberrations in health and disease.
