Televisions have come a long way since the days of bulky cathode ray tubes, and with the rise of 4K, mini-LED, and OLED displays, the options for TV viewing have become near-limitless.

While the traditional 32 and 40-inch TVs have long been staples for the average home, there’s an upward trend toward larger screen sizes, with 70-inch TVs being one of the most sought-after dimensions.

A 70-inch TV has a diagonal measurement of 178 cm, equating to a width of approximately 153 centimeters, or 60 inches.

However, note that this measurement only takes into account the display itself, and doesn’t include the bezels or other external features of the TV.

The actual width of a 70-inch TV can vary depending on the brand, model, and design, but it’s safe to assume that the average width will be around 153 cm as we stated.

Is 70 inches too big for your house?

The rise in popularity of 70-inch TVs can be attributed to several factors. The largest is that the advancements in display technology have allowed for greater screen sizes without sacrificing image quality.

This means that you can now enjoy your favorite movies, TV shows, and video games on a larger display, with high resolution and HDR providing an experience like your parents wouldn’t even be able to imagine in their childhood.

Another reason why 70-inch TVs are gaining in status is the shift toward home entertainment. With the rise of streaming services and the closure of cinemas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people have been opting to create their own home theater rooms, complete with high-end sound systems, comfortable seating, and of course, massive TVs.

Is a 70 inch TV right for you?

When it comes to creating a visually stunning entertainment hub, TV is the centerpiece. A 70-inch TV is not only much larger than the average home TV, but it’s also the perfect size for creating an unforgettable cinematic environment. The huge display allows the action to fully encapsulate you, while the latest display technologies work to produce otherwordly image quality, with vibrant hues and deepest blacks.

However, it’s important to consider not only the size of the TV but also its design and placement in the room. You should aim to create a balance between the TV size and the room’s overall decor, while also optimizing for the best viewing distance.

Yes, a 70-inch TV is big for a normal bedroom of 10×10 feet.  This is due to the fact that you need to maintain a viewing distance between 9-14 feet from your TV. But for the master bedroom and living rooms, 70-inch TVs are a good choice.

Therefore, we suggest you should not go for a 70-inch TV for a small bedroom unless you are used to sitting close to the TV. Because the minimum viewing distance for a 70-inch TV is around 7 feet.

Diagonal table for widescreen TVs

In previous publications, I wrote about what key points it is desirable to pay attention to when choosing a TV. Detailed here and here. This table of TV diagonals will serve as a kind of addition to the articles mentioned and will help you decide on the size of a widescreen (16:9) screen.

Basically, modern TV panels are produced in this format, and their diagonal is measured in inches. For convenience, the table has been translated from inches to centimeters in diagonal, height and width.

I wish you to make the right choice!

Determine the size of the TV suitable for your room

There is an opinion that when choosing a TV the main criterion for its size should be considered the formula “the more the better”. In an era of availability of even very large diagonals, this approach is unlikely to be true. Moreover, for example, each diagonal has its own optimal distance that provides comfortable viewing, as well as its own optimal screen placement height, so as not to put too much stress on the eyes. There are other factors that directly and indirectly influence this choice.

In this article, you will learn about the criteria for determining the appropriate TV dimensions for any room, how to measure them and read them correctly in inches and centimeters.

Optimal TV size

There is a formula for approximate calculation of the diagonal (size) of the TV with reference to the distance to the screen. This formula will help you start your search for the model that best suits your space, as well as your viewing area.

You can find all these parameters for typical TV diagonals in the table below. However, remember that these recommended distances are only estimates and do not take into account many other factors. Below we will look at other parameters that affect the recommended viewing distance based on your personal preferences.

TV diagonal Width Height Diagonal in centimeters Recommended sofa distance
32 inches 75 cm 45 cm 81.28 cm 1.34 m
40″ 90 cm 50 cm 101.6 cm 1.68 m
42″ 90 020

93 cm 52 cm 106. 68 cm 1.76 m
43 in. 97 cm 56 cm 109.22 cm 1.81 m
48 inches 108 cm 63 cm 121.92 cm 2 m
49 inches 110 cm 3 cm 2 m
55″ 123 cm 71 cm 139.7 cm 2.3 m
60″ 134 cm 77 cm 152.4 cm 2.5 m
65″ 145 cm 83 cm 165.1 cm 2.7 m
70″ 157 cm 91 cm 177.8 cm 2.9 m
75 in.0019 95 cm 190.5 cm 3.15 m
86 inches 194 cm 111 cm 218.4 cm 3.6 m

Optimum TV placement height

The height of the screen placement is less critical, so when placing the TV, you can also take into account its compatibility with other elements of the interior of the room.

Still, the ideal height is when the center of the TV screen is at or slightly below your eye level. This is explained by the fact that raising your eyes and thereby straining your neck once again can be very tiring – especially when you have to watch several football matches of the cup final in one sitting, a series of episodes of the last season of an exciting series or your favorite themed movie marathon.

Many experts agree that the center of the TV screen should be about one meter above the floor, but this can vary depending on many things, including the height of your family members (don’t forget the kids!) and the height of your sofa or chair.

There are some exceptions. So, when watching TV while sitting in a chair or lying in bed, the screen can be placed much higher – up to 1.8 m. For such placements, an adjustable stand will be optimal, with which you can easily change the angle of inclination according to your position.

Calculating the ideal TV distance

The distance between the viewer and the screen plays a big role in choosing the right TV diagonal. Staying in close proximity to a screen for extended periods of time can lead to eye strain and eye fatigue too quickly – especially if your TV does not have the appropriate screen protector technology.

At the same time, being too far away from the TV and having difficulty capturing the nuances of what is happening on the screen is, perhaps, only an amateur’s pleasure, and at the same time your eyes will also be strained.

Fortunately, there are several formulas to help you calculate your ideal viewing distance. If you have a Full HD TV, the generally accepted rule of thumb is to add 4.2 cm of viewing distance for every inch of screen diagonal. For example, for a 50″ screen, a distance of 2.1 m would be appropriate.

However, the situation is somewhat different for 4K and 8K/Ultra HD TVs, which play an equally important role in determining the ideal distance from the screen. Higher clarity and sharpness of the image leads to a very significant decrease in conversion rates, so in the case of a 4K or 8K TV, it will be enough to take 2. 1 cm of viewing distance per inch of the screen diagonal.

Speaking of such an important viewing characteristic as eye fatigue, you should definitely take into account the manufacturing technology of your TV display. For example, LG’s 2022 OLED TVs are certified for less blue light emission¹.

In addition, LG’s OLED panels are flicker-free certified and are the first in their class to be UL certified for glare-free², which occurs when there is a large difference between ambient light and display brightness.

Small to Medium TVs

Until recently, a 32-inch TV was considered quite large, but today they are already classified as small screens. These TVs are still very popular due to their viewing distance, which is optimal for many rooms, including the bedroom or kitchen. In addition, they have some of the most advanced features found in flagship models.

Even among the 32-inch models (screen 75 x 45 cm) you can find a TV with support for high dynamic range (High Dynamic Resolution, HDR). For example, the HD model LG 32LQ630B6LA is powered by the latest fifth-generation LG α5 processor, which supports Active HDR, as well as Smart TV webOS and ThinQ AI for content personalization.

Diagonals 40 (90 x 50 cm), 42 (93 x 52 cm) and 43 (97 x 56 cm) inches are commonly referred to as medium. They fit perfectly into small and medium living rooms.

Large TVs

Large TVs range in size from 48 to 60 inches. The screen size of a 48″ TV is approximately 108 x 63 cm, a 49″ is 110 cm x 64 cm, a 50″ is 112 x 65 cm, a 55″ is 123 x 71 cm, and a 60″ is 134 x 77 cm. at a distance of 2.0-2.5 meters from its screen. This distance is easily halved if you opt for a 4K TV. In practice, this means that even in an average living room, you can successfully and usefully place a 60-inch TV.

If you have room for a 55-inch 4K TV, check out the LG OLED55C2RLA with a stunning OLED evo screen, Filmmaker, Brightness Booster and AI Picture Pro modes, and incredible Dolby Atmos sound. This TV supports Dolby Vision 4K at 120Hz, so even ultra-fast action is crisp and smooth.

Largest TVs

Back when super-large TVs didn’t exist at all, 65-inch or larger screens were reserved for projection home theaters. Thanks to the development of modern display technologies, including OLED and QNED, as well as increasing their resolution, such cinema TVs are no longer exotic and are found in many living rooms.

65″ TV screen measures approx. if you buy an 88-inch TV, the ideal viewing distance is just over 1.8m, assuming the model has 4K resolution or higher. So if you have enough space, there is no reason not to choose the largest possible size, of course also making sure that the center of the screen is just below eye level.

Another factor that has previously had to be taken into account is the optimal viewing angle, which is especially critical in a large room where various seats can be located on the side. However, with the advent of OLED screens, the problem has been completely solved – such TVs can be watched without deterioration in brightness, even at the steepest angles.
